An entertaining epic

Before watching this movie, I thought I would watch it bit by bit during a whole week, maybe in 5 sessions since it was about 5 hours long. Eventually, I watched both movies back-to-back just in one single day! It shows that the duration was definitely not an issue and I was definitely entertained from the start until the end. It may sound strange but while watching it, I thought it was some kind... read more

This is a big war movie, "Lord of the Rings" style, based on one of the most famous stories from the start of the Three Kingdoms period in Chinese history. The tyrannical Cao Cao has convinced the feeble emperor to make him Prime Minister and let him lead an expedition to conquer the independent southland. The movie follows the creation of an alliance between the freedom-loving kingdoms of Wu and ... read more

I watched part I and part II. Most people would greatly enjoy the theatrical version (ok not me.). I absolutely loved Takeshi Kaneshiro as Zhuge Liang, so the more the better. He was also in House of the Flying Daggers. *drool*. So if you like, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragons, Hero, and House of the Flying Daggers then move this to the top of your list.

Description: n 208 A.D., in the final days of the Han Dynasty, shrewd Prime Minster Cao Cao convinced the fickle Emperor Han the only way to unite all of China was to declare war on the kingdoms of Xu in the west and East Wu in the south. Thus began a military campaign of unprecedented scale, led by the Prime Minister, himself. Left with no other hope for survival, the kingdoms of Xu and East Wu formed an unlikely alliance. Numerous battles of strength and wit ensued, both on land and on water, eventually culminating in the battle of Red Cliff. During the battle, two thousand ships were burned, and the course of Chinese history was changed f ... (more)

Movies the giraffe watched in 2016: September (13 movies items)

"First viewing - Sept. 3rd Red Cliff is definitely a John Woo film, though thankfully not one of his gun fu movies. Slow motion (sometimes for no real reason)? Check. White doves? Check. Style over substance? Check. The battle scenes make this totally worth watching though, as there are some inventive moments to be found. And the cast does a really good job, which also helps. I wasn't crazy about the CGI use, which occasionally looks obviously fake, but otherwise I was entertained fairly well. "
