A martial arts film that decides that it's not goin to be one.
Many forms of physical combat like to brag of itself as being a form of violent ballet, but Crouching Tiger Hidden dragon is one that just wants to portray it martial arts as an art tool that blends into the majesty of the story's theme of honor, love & wisdom, that this film ends up laying claim to that dance-metaphor that t... read more

If I recall it correctly, I saw this one in the movie theater when it was released back then when I was living in England and I was really impressed but, after all these years, I thought it was really time to watch again the damned thing. Well, first of all, this movie was really gorgeous and it was something really unexpected from Ang Lee, considering he just directed a Western (‘Ride with Devi... read more

The disappearance of a magical jade sword spurs a breathtaking quest for the missing treasure. Li (Chow Yun-Fat) is embittered by the loss of his jade sword, and his unrequited pursuit of Yu (Michelle Yeoh) is further complicated by the mysterious intrusion of an assassin. The identity of the assassin is gradually unveiled as another poignant tale of love begins to ravel with that of Li and Yu against the backdrop of Western China's magnificent landscape.

“I was absolutely mesmerised by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Everything about it is breathtaking, it is nothing short of a poetic, visually gorgeous martial arts masterpiece. As much as I did love Brokeback Mountain, I think this is Ang Lee's best film. Speaking of Lee, he is a fine director, and does a superb job with his direction on this film. The story is easy to follow, but there is also a certain complexity to it as it explores the perennial themes of love, loyalty, duty and sacrifice, while the script is wonderfully poetic and the pace rarely lags.

The characters are also hugely credible. They could have been clichéd easily, but actually they have surprisingly so much depth to them and at the end you admire them. The visuals, music, stunt work and acting are what really” read more

Films I've seen on celluloid in the digital era (190 movies items)

"FORMAT: 35mm PRINT QUALITY: ★★★★★ NOTES: Most likely a US print since the subtitles were written in California, and it looks astonishing. The dust sometimes increases in size for several seconds, particularly when the film flashes back to Jen Yu’s first encounter with Dark Cloud and when she loses her first fight with him, but despite that and a slight technical glitch at one spoilery point, the rest of the dust was minuscule. It looked clear enough that it felt that you really were "
