A great classic

To be honest, it has been ages since I saw this movie and I should definitely re-watch at some point. I have to admit that except for ‘Blowup, I didn’t care so much for the movies I have seen directed by Michelangelo Antonioni but there is no denying that, in the 60's, he was a major movie director and this movie was one of the many masterpieces he made back in those days. Jeanne Moreau and Ma... read more

The Book Fool

As entertaining as the ‘hot sins’ are, sometimes it’s good cinema to follow the book fool, mostly free of these popular sins, but just living a quietly unenlightened life. Society and the other book fools look up to him, but he hasn’t found the way to happiness. Incidentally I’ve also seen L’Avventura by the same director, although I’m not sure if I have a preference between the two... read more

Description: Marcello Mastroianni (La Dolce VIta, 8 1/2) and Jeanne Moreau (Jules And Jim, The Bride Wore Black) are affluent but emotionally estranged spouses in Michelangelo Antonioni's 1961 post-neorealistic classic La Notte. After ten years of marriage, Giovanni, a successful novelist, and his wife Lidia have grown apart. He is no longer attracted to her, and she finds him boring and self-absorbed. During the course of a single day, they are faced with heartache, desperation and personal loss. When the night comes, both are tempted by thoughts of infidelity but ultimately return to each other. Unable to come to terms with their emotions, ... (more)

Incidentally I’ve also seen L’Avventura by the same director, although I’m not sure if I have a preference between the two. They’re both solid films…. This isn’t better or worse than a Greta Gerwig film; it’s kinda the 1961 version of “Nights and Weekends”…. Although obviously I understand what they’re saying because it’s subtitled—like Shakespeare, I could understand Greek if only it were subtitled—I have to say that it’s a nice touch that the movie isn’t solely driven along by d” read more

Movies the giraffe watched in 2021: March (34 movies items)

"First viewing - Mar. 27th I switched from France to Italy for my second feature on this Saturday afternoon, and had I enjoyed this film more I probably would have made an entire day out of watching films from other countries. But while this film has a good story and some memorable scenes and characters, I found it tedious to hang with its relaxed pace and extended detours. By the end of it I felt like they could have dropped 30-45 minutes out of it and it would have worked even better. I get th"

"10.2. Toinen katselukerta, edellisestä 9 vuotta. KAVIn Turun sarjassa oli nyt mahdollista kokea La Notte vielä isolta kankaalta ja filmiltä nähtynä. Antonionin narratiivin hidas kerronta, hahmojen (pako)tanssi ja visuaalinen kerronta lumoaa täysin. Käsittämättön tunnelataus koko elokuvassa. Mastroianni, Moreau, Vitti, uhh."
