Evil is everywhere.

''Evil is everywhere. Someone will always sell you for thirty pieces of silver. New misfortunes constantly befall the peasant... either Tatars, or famine, or plague... and he still keeps on working... meekly bearing his cross. He does not despair. He is silent and patient. He only prays to God for enough strength. How could God not forgive him his ignorance?''

After watching ‘Ivan’s Childhood’, I was quite eager to further discover Andrei Tarkovsky and this movie was the obvious next step in this journey. Well, if Tarkovsky might be the most difficult director I know, this might be his most inscrutable directing effort so far (on the other hand, I have seen only 3 of his movies and I’m slightly worried about what will happen with the rest of hi... read more

Excellent historical reenactment reminiscent, at times, thorough bill another great Russian filmmaker, Eisenstein, in his latest epic work (Alexander Nevsky; Ivan The Terrible).
It is important the peculiar psychological study of characters by Tarkovsky, but the narrative is excessively prolonged in some sequences where, though relevant, could have been replaced by others that enrich furthe... read more

"FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★½ NOTES: 1991 Artificial Eye re-release, a heavily worn and often damaged print. A few unique faults were several white scratches merging into a brief flash, a caption with an ink spill at the side and a reel opening on a black screen and an isolated subtitled reading, “How did I ever accept you as a pupil?” DATE: July 18th 2023 CINEMA: The Prince Charles Cinema LOCATION: West End"

By the way, I did find an interesting review on IMDd (actually of 'Stalker' but it applies to Tarkosky in general) which was finally rather spot-on: 'Andrei Tarkovsky is a rarity among filmmakers i

It’s rather funny, afterwards, I checked IMDb to get some insights about this really opaque movie and, very often, you would get many fans telling you that it is the greatest Soviet epic ever made but none of them explained what was actually so great about the damned thing. At least, it was definitely a step up from ‘Ivan’s Childhood’ and there is no doubt that Ta"

I did the same thing, immediately trying to figure out why it is considered so great and had such a difficult time finding straight answers from people, haha

"10.01 Tarkovski/NL 1966 Uusintakatselu Ei mulla riitä kognitiiviset kyvyt tämän avaamiseen. Vaskikellojakso (nimenomaan Andrei Rublev -nimisen sinfonian yhteydessä, vaikka yksinkin se olisi henkeäsalpaavan suvereenisti toteutettu lyhytelokuva) on parasta mitä elokuvataide on maailmalle antanut."
