A good movie

I had no idea what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by Charlie Kaufman and since it was available on Netflix, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, as usual with Kaufman, it turned out to be an extremely challenging movie. Basically, it is the kind of movies where nothing seems to be what it might seem to be. For example, something as simple as the name of the main character ... read more

" Notes: Well, as usual with Charlie Kaufman, it turned out to be an extremely challenging movie. Basically, it is the kind of movies where nothing seems to be what it might seem to be. For example, something as simple as the name of the main character was changed various times on purpose. On top of that, the whole thing started pretty much as a rather bleak and gloomy affair and there was at first not much chemistry with this couple. However, the fact that they were both extremely articulate an"

"2020 It's difficult to combine so many themes and metaphors into a single film and have it still be entertaining, profound and worthy of multiple viewings... but Kaufman is the master in such accomplishments and he has done it again. "

" Date: 11/2/2020 Viewed: Netflix Fist Viewing Note: I have looked forward to watching this movie for a while now because I'm a big fan of Charlie Kaufman's work. I do admit that I wanted to wait for the hype to die down because I notice people get so angry when other people don't care for this movie. Enough time has passed and I finally watched it on Netflix. To be honest, I'm not sure if I like this movie or not. The acting is great and the production values are solid. I love the cold snowy "

Film Journal 2020 (125 movies items)

"I really enjoy Charlie Kaufman and have enjoyed joining him on this journey where he has consistently turned more and more inward with each successive film, be it a script or a directorial effort. Here that trend sure keeps going, occasionally dipping to slightly too self-indulgent territory (the Pauline Kael -inspired conversation and the dance scene in particular), but the vitriolic nature of his self-hatred and self-shame keeps this going admirably. It's literally ugly, as well as in content,"

"Format: Streaming Viewing: 1st Thoughts: Normally I'm on board for Charlie Kaufman wackiness (it's definitely an acquired taste), but this just didn't work for me and kept losing my interest. Here he has ventured into some strange Coen Brothers/Stephen King territory. It definitely has its moments and offers a pretty interesting take on relationships in the modern world. But yeah it will be a struggle for most to get through it."
