Sir Laurence Olivier might have taken a pair of sheers and pruned off much of the text (including any and all comic relief), but what he left is some terrific stuff. Description: William Shakespeare's tale of tragedy of murder and revenge in the royal halls of medieval Denmark. Claudius, brother to the King, conniving with the Queen, poisons the monarch and seizes the throne, taking the widowed Gertrude for his bride. Hamlet, son of the murdered King, mournful of his father's death and mother's hasty marriage, is confronted by the ghost of the late King who reveals the manner of his murder. Seeking revenge, Hamlet recreates the monstrous deed in a play with the help of some traveling actors to torment the conscience of the evil Claudius. "Per questo suo ambizioso e premiatissimo adattamento del dramma dell'indecisione, Olivier mette espressionismo - anche se più tardi ammise che il b/n fu più un obbligo che una scelta - Welles e un po' di Hitchcock (l'intro del Monologo) in una versione che accentua il lato psicanalitico della tragedia. Ci vanno di di mezzo i passaggi meno foschi - Rosencrantz e Guildenstern sono tagliati completamente - e qua e là il ritmo ne risente, ma è solo un problema minore: di certo, il Bardo aiuta."
