A world apart for Elizabeth Harman. She lacks fury, because she has just one breakdown and is too strong for resist the humiliations. Winters is so convincing in such a oprobious role, that she deserved her oscar.

Sidney Poitier’s transformation from individual performer to all-encompassing symbol of an entire race as the lone black star of prominence is evident by the mid-60s. His thankless role of therapist to an alt-right Bobby Darin in Pressure Point was a red flag of this happening, as was his great work as a “respectable” character in Lilies of the Field. The sexuality, reservoirs of fire, and l... read more

Description: Accidentally blinded by her prostitute mother Rose-Ann at the age of five, Selena D'Arcy spends the next 13 years confined in the tiny Los Angeles apartment that they share with "Ole Pa", Selena's grandfather. One afternoon at the local park, Selena meets Gordon Ralfe, a thoughtful young office worker whose kind-hearted treatment of her results in her falling in love with him, unaware that he is black. They continue to meet in the park every afternoon and he teaches her how to get along in the city. But when the cruel, domineering Rose-Ann learns of their relationship, she forbids her to have anything more to do with h ... (more)

"First viewing - Feb. 28th HBO Max Been wanting to watch one of Sidney Poitier's films since he left us, and fortunately A Patch of Blue is currently on HBO Max. It's a fairly grounded & honest story about two people who are able to look past each other's surface & see them as they truly are. Selina's family is loathsome, and credit goes to Winters & Ford for making them believable. I appreciated the avoidance of stereotypes & the way Selina's blindness is treated respectfully. There's a scene i"

" Director: Guy Green His 12th movie My 1st movie watched from the director Shelley Winters and Sidney Poitier have great chemistry in this beautiful film about two people who are stereotyped and overcome prejudice just through love and friendship and seeing each other for who they are, not what they are. Ok, doesn't sound real original but it works here, especially for the mid-60s. Added to Lists: Top Ten Performances - Sidney Poitier The Best Movies of THE Time - 1960s __________ Locat"

A Patch of Blue

“Sidney Poitier’s transformation from individual performer to all-encompassing symbol of an entire race as the lone black star of prominence is evident by the mid-60s. His thankless role of therapist to an alt-right Bobby Darin in Pressure Point was a red flag of this happening, as was his great work as a “respectable” character in Lilies of the Field. The sexuality, reservoirs of fire, and loose physicality in films like A Raisin in the Sun and The Defiant Ones is slowly giving way to transitioning him to a living marble statue.   Into this change comes 1965’s A Patch of Blue in which he engages with a supremely chaste romance with a blind girl (Elizabeth Hartman) in a narrative that broadly sweeps his black skin and her blank eyes as the same type of socially ostracizing thing” read more

Racism - Movies (32 movies items)

" Sidney Poitier as Gordon Ralfe and Elizabeth Hartman as Selina D’Arcey Selina convinces her grandfather to take her to the park, where she happens to meet Gordon Ralfe, an educated and soft-spoken black man working night shifts in an office. The two quickly become friends, meeting at the park almost every day. Gordon learns that she was blinded at the age of five when Rose-Ann (Shelley Winters) threw chemicals on her while attempting to hit her husband, and also that she was raped by one of"
