The Interview (2014)
12/27/14
Directed by: Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg
With such a ballsy concept you'd think they'd put some effort into not making this have every cliche in the book. There's some laughs but for the most part "The Interview" is a wasted opportunity. I really wanted more out of the titular interview scene and James Franco was just unbearable by the end.

Dabangg 2 (2012)
12/22/14
Directed by: Arbaaz Khan
Dabangg 2 features a much needed increase in technology. Better cameras with the inclusion of actual high-speed cameras for the gratuitous slow-mo shots. So with the action looking better I thought this was the film I wanted, but sadly it lacks all of the charm of the original and even the things I thought were bad about the first film are magnified. Even though the action is handled better on a technical level, it's just not nearly as creative and the story lacked any real drama or conflict until it was shoehorned into the last 20 minutes. All it does is shamelessly rehash all the memorable scenes and quirks from the original and as a result it really feels tired. Very much a "sequel" in all it's negative connotations.

Directed by: Abhinav Kashyap
The biggest problem with this film is the technical limitations. There's a lot of slow-mo shots in the action scenes but rarely is a high-speed camera utilized and the frenetic editing hinder a lot of the brilliant ideas for action scenes. It's certainly still watchable and enjoyable but all I can think is how fantastic these scenes could have been. The story itself is nothing to write home about, pretty generic revenge cycle kind of thing but it works well enough and I did like how they at least tried to tie the musical scenes into the story. Every Bollywood movie I've seen the musical numbers are completely random. Overall, Dabanng is a very fun and enjoyable movie that's really just hindered by some technical limitations.

I Hate But Love (1962)
12/03/14
Directed by: Koreyoshi Kurahara
I had high hopes for the Kurahara Eclipse set after The Warped Ones being good enough for me to consider adding to the "Favourites List" and I Hate But Love is at least equally as good. The film looks and sounds great and the story is really cool. A lot of fun even if it abandoned most of the new-wave traits of The Warped Ones. Definitely excited about the rest of this set.

Holy shit. I don't understand much of what happened but it was pretty much like if Godard and Lynch teamed up to write it and the results were about as good as possible. Not at all what I was expecting but I was more than pleasantly surprised. I don't even know what to say about it other than I think it might be a masterpiece.

To put it simply, its like if Terry Gilliam made Enemy. I don't want to say the film is biting Brazil, but it kind of feels that way in the first half though its not really a bad thing. The film puts a decent amount of effort into world building which is adds to the films already lovely, if a bit flashy, cinematography and a big selling point is the fantastic soundtrack. Even though anything you would say about a Terry Gilliam film could easily apply to this, it still managed to feel unique enough to stand out and its just a really enjoyable movie overall. Would watch again.

Enemy (2013)
11/24/14
Directed by: Denis Villeneuve
Villeneuve can make a good looking movie but he picks some boring scripts. Just not the slightest bit intriguing and the ridiculous pacing that's so off from the tone of the film make it so hard to give a shit. It really lacks dynamics. The film is always at the same level whether its the set up or the climax and as a result if feels just consistently humdrum. Lots of moments when the characters actions feel distractingly unrealistic and a lot of unnecessary scenes littered throughout. Feels kind of like a third of the movie got cut. Despite all this, it is a very good looking movie and the score was nice when it wasn't being obnoxious and it was never explicitly terrible. Overall, a lot better than Prisoners at least.

Big Hero 6 (2014)
11/15/14
Directed by: Don Hall & Chris Williams
Bland story, convenient writing, surprisingly uninspired setting and a slew of uninteresting characters, except for one. Baymax is the only reason for seeing this. His schtick never gets old, every joke works and his design is brilliant. Makes what would be another eye-roller of a Disney movie consistently entertaining and enjoyable. I also greatly appreciate that there was no chart topping pop songs involved and also the movie is great visually.

Cremaster 4 (1995)
11/06/14
Directed by: Matthew Barney
Definitely the most poorly made and straight forward of the cycle thus far (especially in regard to the testicle imagery) which is understandable since it was the first one made. The cameras are of such low quality it actually makes for a cool aesthetic instead of just looking like it was made for TV. My least favourite of the bunch but still interesting enough for me to enjoy it.

Hey, this one almost looks like a film! But seriously, I was extremely surprised by how watchable, coherent and genuinely entertaining the entire 3 hours of this was. There was a story in there somewhere and I really loved how everything developed though the last 40 or so minutes (the segment entitled "The Order") was a very drastic change from the rest of the film but I eventually got into it once I started to see how it fit with the previous events. This is a blast and the 3 hours go by like nothing. Although I think I like what happens in Cremaster 2 better, this is the superior film because of the vast technical improvements.

I was very surprised by how this piece of "fine art" was filmed so badly. There was some neat scenes and I get what is was doing but overall it wasn't much more than just okay.

The Babadook (2014)
11/02/14

This movie had so much going for it in the first half and the concept of personal grief and domestic issues being portrayed as a monster was a really smart idea and the grief is really well shown. The highlight of the movie is in the first half when the mother is just dealing with her difficult child. These scenes are extremely tense and well executed but unfortunately the horror elements can't carry the same intensity. It doesn't get bad per-se but there is some less than amazing effects that do distract from the film but otherwise the film is very nice looking and the acting is top notch. A very solid film, especially for a debut. Very nearly great.

A found footage movie about big foot that's written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait of all people? Sadly, that fact is more interesting than the movie itself. The characters are written to have enough chemistry but I don't know if it necessarily shines through even though the acting itself is solid enough. The biggest problem is that there's just not enough of a payoff. All build up that goes nowhere. I say build up but there's really no part that's actually tense. Despite all this, the film isn't terrible. It's definitely watchable and passably entertaining so I guess it's not a total waste.

Foe 2 follows the same events as the first film but from the other character's point of view and, while not really adding a ton of new info, the decision to shoot this one traditionally instead of keeping the "found-footage" style of the first film kept things fresh enough and overall I think this is a fun double-header. My only major complaint is that I wish they didn't cut back to the first film's main character at all, it kind of defeats the purpose in a way but it's still not a huge gripe.

Even though it's in the same mockumentary style as Noroi, Occult is quite different in that it appeared to have no intention of being creepy and more focused on telling the story which actually worked pretty well as a subversion of expectations as it was a pretty entertaining movie. Not that there wasn't any "scares" but I felt they were more for plot progression than to actually be frightening. Overall, it's an enjoyable film but its probably not the best choice for your Halloween movie marathon. Also, Kiyoshi Kurosawa had a cameo.

It felt very promising at the start with some strong Noroi: The Curse vibes (same director) but a lot of really bad and unnecessary CGI ruin it and it gets less creepy throughout because of some silly plot points. It's not bad though, just disappointing. If it was just a by the numbers haunted house movie I think it would have been a lot more successful.
