Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
12/24/15
Directed by: J.J. Abrams
I don't know much about Star Wars but this feels like an authentic Star Wars film and its fun, even with all the pandering to fans. Wish I didn't have to see it in 3D because the movie probably looked really good.

Time Masters (1982)
12/16/15
Directed by: René Laloux
Definitely a cool movie with great ideas throughout but it does feel a bit like things just happening. The end really tied it together though, even if it was pretty sudden. Obviously it looked great and the soundtrack was rad too.

Directed by: Gaspar Noé
The obvious standouts of the film are the framing, lighting, score & cinematography (no surprise) but this film does have a surprising amount of heart and strong feelings of both love and regret, though it may be a little too in your face for some. I enjoyed the "heart on his sleeve" approach and the story structure definitely worked to the films advantage this time around (unlike Irreversible) and is definitely Noé's strongest film to date (of the one's I've seen that is).

I'm not going to get into "meaning" or anything like that because I don't know dick-diddly about that sort of thing (nor do I typically care to) but in terms of an experience; the mood, atmosphere and feels are wonderful and obviously the beautiful cinematography and soundtrack add to that greatly. I enjoyed not being subjected to another lame "narrative" and got to just "feel" a film for two plus hours.

Organ (1996)
11/29/15
Directed by: Kei Fujiwara
It's weird and all that (and I do like weird) but this is so ineptly conceived and executed, as well as boring, that its just impossible to care about anything. It's not like there isn't some neat ideas here, but that's why its so frustrating, because this movie makes them really really dumb ideas. Doesn't help that this was filmed on a potato by seemingly a high schooler. Just painful. Sometimes the music is ok though.

Candyman (1992)
10/10/15
Directed by: Bernard Rose
A movie from the 90's based on urban legend and has twists and its NOT cheesy? But seriously, this film is a really smart deconstruction of urban legend and is a bit meta in its themes. Even without the great concept, its still a very well paced film that's quite entertaining. The ending is a little confused in what it wants the tone to be but that's a pretty mild gripe.

Intentionally confusing and vague though there is enough interesting ideas to make it entertaining. Some cheesy moments and better cameras would have really helped with their high-gloss approach but overall its still pretty neat. These guys should probably attempt to step away from the whole giallo thing after this. I'd be curious about the results.

Can't properly review it because the screening I was at had an absurd amount of technical problems (inconsistent frame rate, darkness, pixelated video). I'm not really into bleak, eastern European cinema but this had some cool scenes. A bit hard to follow with the sign-language gimmick and all but it was decent.

The deliberate and meticulously planned cinematography is impressive and beautiful to look at but that, as well as the very focused script, constrain La Belle Noiseuse to being just a film and lacks the playfulness or freedom to reach beyond that. That being said, I do think I missed some things towards the end that stepped outside of my previous criticism. Overall an enjoyable, though not specifically rewarding, experience.

The plot with the girl had potential but the shit with the emotions getting lost was so poorly handled and wound up being obscenely bland. Mostly awful but at least the score was good.
