To many, classic horror starts from the 70's or from early 80's. I disagree. To me it was from early 20's to mid 50's, the true predecessor of modern horror. Many of the well-known horror movies were made at this time and The Wolf Man is one of them. Although not the first werewolf movie, it certainly was the most influential and iconic. I consider the performance of Lon Chaney, Jr. as the doomed ... read more

I remember first seeing The Wolf Man when I was 8 11 years ago, and being quite unnerved. Now it doesn't as much, but the atmosphere is still there and I can also appreciate the film for its other successful components. Upon the death of his brother, Larry Talbot returns from America to his ancestral home in Wales. He visits a gypsy camp with village girl Jenny Williams, who is attacked by Bela, a gypsy who has turned into a werewolf. Larry kills the werewolf but is bitten during the fight. Bela's mother tells him that this will cause him to become a werewolf at each full moon. Larry confesses his plight to his unbelieving father, Sir John, who then joins the villagers in a hunt for the wolf. Larry, transformed by the full moon, heads for the forest and a fateful meeting with both Sir John and Gwen.

The film may look dated compared to what's going on today with technology to some, but I personally think for its time The Wolf Man is well made and when I watch it today I think the production values have their charm. The sets and costumes are highly atmospheric, and the make up is exceptional. The music is also chilling, the direction is fine, the script is intelligent and literate and the plot captivates. The performances are excellent too, Maria Ouspenskaya and Bela Lugosi are great, Claude Rains is superb and Lon Chaney Jnr gives a very sympathetic and believable perfo” read more

"Re-watch - Oct. 30th The Wolf Man was the last of the Universal monsters films I felt we needed to watch this month, so I made sure we got it in on Friday night. (The Mummy is so slowly paced I can barely hang with it, so I figured the kiddo wouldn't be able to sit through it.) Of all the Universal films we watched this month I think she enjoyed this one the most as she was more invested in it. She even recognized Lon Chaney Jr. when he first showed up, and I had to remind her he was in Abbott "

"Lon Chaneyta vituttaa kun se joutuu muuttumaan sudeksi. Claude Rains ei moista usko ja puhuu huoneessa. Ralph Bellamy uusii His Girl Fridayn klassisen roolinsa esittämällä jälleen Ralph Bellamyn näköistä miestä."

" - Rewatch | Second time The Wolf Man is almost all about Lon Chaney's performance as the cursed man. He is outstanding. His mournful eyes and overall panic-inducing performance lends perfectly well to the mood and atmosphere of The Wolf man, creating a film that's just as sorrowful as it is thrilling. It's also shot very well and it makes great use of its misty forest to set the tone. It's all about building up the atmosphere and then to unleash it into the terror once the moment is right. Th"
