I appreciate shooting on location and the set design, what I don't appreciate is having one joke for every 5 minutes of boring, generic narrative. This movie isn't funny, and isn't well made. I found myself just feeling bad for Charlize Theron the whole time, having to recite Seth MacFarlane's masturbatory dialogue.

I'm now convinced the intent of this was to shit all over the original series. I'm really close to giving this a 1/10.

Update: I did.

This movie made me think, and it made me think I should think more about Rosetta. But I think I didn't like this really.

Nightcrawler (2014)
December 14th

Directed by: Dan Gilroy

I always appreciate movies that don't try to be realistic, and this movie is downright cartoonish in every way except, unfortunately, visually. The narrative is a tad predictable, but a lot better than my expectations. It was never repetitive. I was totally expecting to hate this, but it's an exciting, fun and sometimes suspenseful movie.
CD Smiles's rating:
People who added this item 377 Average listal rating (239 ratings) 6.1 IMDB Rating 6.5
December 13th

Directed by: Woody Allen

Pleasant, simple, easy to watch. Nothing wrong with it, but it just feels easy. It's definitely much better written than the average romantic comedy, but unfortunately Woody Allen just has such a fantastic backlog that the standard is very high. Again, it's quite nice. Emma Stone did a great job too.
CD Smiles's rating:

As much as I hate George Lucas I was ready to hear arguments for why I shouldn't, and there really wasn't any of that. Which I guess makes sense, because it is called what it's called, so I guess it's just presenting what people's problems are with Lucas. So basically preaching to the choir here. Either way, it was well made and occasionally informative.

Usually I call this type of movie a "recap movie", but it didn't really feel like that for some reason. Maybe it's because it was made 15 years later that it doesn't really bother me. So I don't hate it for being a recap movie, I hate it for other reasons. Dumbed down and gussied up from the original and it looks totally gross. Typical of new anime to sacrifice all possible style for just trying to make things look as good as they can. Adding things to action scenes that are just there to look cool, and I groan at every one of them. Oh, and the soundtrack sucks, but that's probably just because the original is the best thing ever. In the end, it's not the worst thing ever, and it did make me appreciate the original anime more, so that's a benefactor. Watch the anime if you want to watch Berserk.

Kind of arrogant to call this "Video Games: The Movie" when it's edited worse and is less interesting than an episode of G4 Icons. This might be a decent thing to show someone who knows absolutely nothing about video games, but for me it's stuff I've heard a million times and it just looks like a shitty TV special. Except most shitty TV specials don't have typos.

Boyhood (2014)
November 12th

Directed by: Richard Linklater

The movie being so long it's kind of hard to keep track of all my nitpicks. There's a lot of cool subtleties but also a lot of times they beat you over the head with "REMEMBER THIS? LOL". Which, I suppose took a small amount of foresight to realize these things would last. Also, I think it's a bit arrogant to call your film "Boyhood" like it's the quintessential example of a male's young life, because this character doesn't resemble my experience or the experiences of anyone I know, as far as I know. I don't relate to this, and unfortunately the things I love about Richard Linklater are scarce in Boyhood. I think the first really memorable conversation happens two hours into the film. Ironic, this being so long that there's somehow no time for dialogue. Honestly, this is probably about as good as I could imagine a movie operating under this gimmick being. What's weird is last month I couldn't stand Ethan Hawke and now I can't help but love him.

I don't want to say anything because I was angry just at the fact that I knew the setting of this movie beforehand. So I'll just say I love the way these films are done, I love the kind of "gimmick" of this one, and I don't know if I can stop myself from watching the third immediately.

Not to say the movie was bad, I'm just a big fan of the source material now and I think a lot could be done with it other than just this. The effects were obviously incredible and that would be the highlight if it weren't for The Invisible Man's amazing one-liners.

Comparing it to the original, it's actually got much nicer cinematography and pacing. It's much more consistently entertaining, despite still feeling much too long. I do like the original and it also has it's advantages, but this is a better movie.
