*Captain Phillips

*Gravity
*Her
*Nebraska
*Philomena
*12 Years a Slave
*The Wolf of Wall Street
And the Oscar goes to...
**12 Years a Slave**

Update: 12 Years a Slave is still the favorite here, but it's not a lock. Gravity is the most likely spoiler here, having won various other prizes, including tying with Slave at the PGAs. American Hustle's momentum following the SAGs has pretty much died. It's got a chance, but it's highly unlikely.
Earlier
This is one of the closest races in recent memory. American Hustle, Gravity and 12 Years a Slave could all vary well win. Each has won a precursor. Hustle won the Golden Globe for comedy, and the SAG for best ensemble (or their Best Picture). 12 Years won the drama Globe and the Critic's choice, along with tying Gravity for best picture at the Producer's Guild. Its a close one, but I'm going with what's been my prediction all year, 12 Years a Slave. It feels like it's got the momentum. If it doesn't, look for American Hustle to take it. Gravity could win, but I think that it has the weakest chance of the three. But if the other two split, then it's a possibility.
Was I Right: Yes.

Best Director
Gravity (2013)
And the nominees are...

*Alfonso Cuarón- Gravity
*Steve McQueen- 12 Years a Slave
*Alexander Payne- Nebraska
*David O. Russell- American Hustle
*Martin Scorsese- The Wolf of Wall Street
And the Oscar goes to...
**Alfonso Cuarón- Gravity**

*Alfonso Cuarón- Gravity
*Steve McQueen- 12 Years a Slave
*Alexander Payne- Nebraska
*David O. Russell- American Hustle
*Martin Scorsese- The Wolf of Wall Street
And the Oscar goes to...
**Alfonso Cuarón- Gravity**

Update: He's one of the few locks of the night.
Earlier
While the BP race is seemingly up in the air, the director's race is not. Cuarón's won most all of the other awards and is likely to win here. But, if either 12 Years or Hustle pick up steam, their directors could pull an upset.
Was I Right: Yep.

Best Actor
Dallas Buyers Club (2013)
And the nominees are...

*Christian Bale- American Hustle
*Bruce Dern- Nebraska
*Leonardo DiCaprio- The Wolf of Wall Street
*Chiwetel Ejiofor- 12 Years a Slave
*Matthew McConaughey- Dallas Buyers Club
And the Oscar goes to...
**Matthew McConaughey- Dallas Buyers Club**

Was I Right: Yes.

*Christian Bale- American Hustle
*Bruce Dern- Nebraska
*Leonardo DiCaprio- The Wolf of Wall Street
*Chiwetel Ejiofor- 12 Years a Slave
*Matthew McConaughey- Dallas Buyers Club
And the Oscar goes to...
**Matthew McConaughey- Dallas Buyers Club**

McConaughey won the SAG, the Golden Globe, and the Critic's Choice Award. In any other year, that would make him a lock, not this year. Granted, he is the heavy favorite, but not completely clear. If 12 Years a Slave starts doing better than expected, Ejiofor could surprise, as could DiCaprio, who has gained a lot of momentum as of late. Dern has a shot, but not a great one, and I find it highly unlikely that Bale will surprise here, but stranger things have happened.
Was I Right: Yes.

Best Actress
Blue Jasmine (2013)
And the nominees are...

*Amy Adams- American Hustle
*Cate Blanchett- Blue Jasmine
*Sandra Bullock- Gravity
*Judi Dench- Philomena
*Meryl Streep- August: Osage County
And the Oscar goes to...
**Cate Blanchett- Blue Jasmine**

*Amy Adams- American Hustle
*Cate Blanchett- Blue Jasmine
*Sandra Bullock- Gravity
*Judi Dench- Philomena
*Meryl Streep- August: Osage County
And the Oscar goes to...
**Cate Blanchett- Blue Jasmine**

Blachett's won damn near everything this season, and seems like one of the few genuine locks of the night. Amy Adams is probably running second and, if Hustle really starts to clean up, she might have a shot. But that's pretty unlikely.
Was I Right: Yes.

Best Supporting Actress
Nebraska (2013)
And the nominees are...

*Sally Hawkins- Blue Jasmine
*Jennifer Lawrence- American Hustle
*Lupita Nyong'o- 12 Years a Slave
*Julia Roberts- August: Osage County
*June Squibb- Nebraska
And the Oscar goes to...
**Jennifer Lawrence- American Hustle**

Earlier
Was I Right: No, Nyong'o rightfully won.

*Sally Hawkins- Blue Jasmine
*Jennifer Lawrence- American Hustle
*Lupita Nyong'o- 12 Years a Slave
*Julia Roberts- August: Osage County
*June Squibb- Nebraska
And the Oscar goes to...
**Jennifer Lawrence- American Hustle**

Update: This is an extremely close race. And in extremely close races, it's usually something superficial that decides the winner. Something like likeability starts playing a bigger part than it should. While Nyong'o has become this season's darling, I think last year's Jennifer Lawrence pulls something of an upset here. Its eerily reminiscent of the Best Actress situation two years ago when Viola Davis won the Critic's Choice and SAG awards, and Meryl Streep won the Golden Globe and BAFTA, and then went on to win the Oscar. I think a similar result occurs here too. If they both split, June Squibb could pull a major upset.
Earlier
It's a two-woman race here, with Nyong'o seemingly holding a slight lead of Lawrence. It's highly posible that Lawrence will win this, but I find it unlikely that the academy would give two in a row to someone so young, and highly likely to be nominated again. Also, Nyong'o has sort of become this award season's darling, generating a lot of love from fans, and likely voters.
Was I Right: No, Nyong'o rightfully won.

Best Supporting Actor
Captain Phillips (2013)
And the nominees are...

*Barkhad Abdi- Captain Phillips
*Bradley Cooper- American Hustle
*Michael Fassbender- 12 Years a Slave
*Jonah Hill- The Wolf of Wall Street
*Jared Leto- Dallas Buyers Club
And the Oscar goes to...
**Jared Leto- Dallas Buyers Club**

Was I Right: Yes.

*Barkhad Abdi- Captain Phillips
*Bradley Cooper- American Hustle
*Michael Fassbender- 12 Years a Slave
*Jonah Hill- The Wolf of Wall Street
*Jared Leto- Dallas Buyers Club
And the Oscar goes to...
**Jared Leto- Dallas Buyers Club**

Leto has won virtually every award out there, he's a lock. If he were to be upset though, I'd go with Cooper, based solely on the amount of love it appears the academy has for American Huslte.
Was I Right: Yes.

Best Adapted Screenplay
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
And the nominees are...
*Steve Coogan & Jeff Pope- Philomena
*Richard Linklater, Julie Delpy & Ethan Hawke- Before Midnight
*Billy Ray- Captain Phillips
*John Ridley- 12 Years a Slave
*Terence Winter- The Wolf of Wall Street
And the Oscar goes to...

*Billy Ray- Captain Phillips
*John Ridley- 12 Years a Slave
*Terence Winter- The Wolf of Wall Street
And the Oscar goes to...
**John Ridley- 12 Years a Slave**

This is pretty much a lock for Ridley. 12 Years is one of three major Best Picture contenders, and the only one in this category. Before Midnight or Philomena could surprise here, but they won't.
Was I Right: Yes.

Best Original Screenplay
Her (2013)
And the nominees are...
*Woody Allen- Blue Jasmine

*Craig Borten & Melisa Wallack- Dallas Buyers Club
*Spike Jonze- Her
*Bob Nelson- Nebraska
*Eric Warren Singer & David O. Russell- American Hustle
And the Oscar goes to...
**Spike Jonze- Her**

Update: I've thought long and hard about this one, and I think I'm gonna stick with Her. It's fairly neck and neck between it and American Hustle, but Her has won everything it's supposed to to be considered the frontrunner. Also, many may be thrown off by the reports that most of Hustle was improvised.
Earlier
This category comes down to Hustle and Her, and I feel like Her is slightly ahead. Jonze won the Golden Globe and Critic's Choice Award, beating Russell and Singer both times. Having said that, American Hustle got 10 nods, and is a Best Picture frontrunner. Whoever wins the WGA will give a bit more clarity as to who the favorite is, but for now I'm sticking wih Jonze.
Was I Right: Yes.

One of the biggest locks of the night, if Lubezki loses it would be shocking. The only potential spoiler here would be Deakins, who has been nominated 11 times without a win.

**The Great Beauty**

I've stated numerous times that I have no clue as to what the academy's tastes are when it comes to the foreign film category, and the still stands. I'm going with The Great Beauty simply because it won the Golden Globe. The Broken Circle Breakdown or The Hunt could just as easily win.
Was I Right: Yes.
