I really had no idea what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by Sally Potter and since there was a really nice cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Even though Potter has a solid reputation, I have to admit that I don’t have a clear view or understanding of what her work is actually about but it might have to do with the fact that it was only the 3rd movie I sa... read more

A comedy wrapped around a tragedy. It starts as a celebration and ends with blood on the floor.

Mustanaamio7's Movie Diary 2020 (149 movies items)

"4.12. 2020 A politician wants to celebrate her success but all the people invited to the party have their own problems and secrets which causes all kinds of problems. I'm not sure why this film was shot in black and white. It seems to be just a trick without any real purpose. The basis of the film reminds me of Ingmar Bergman's poignant human relationship films but it's too bad that this party stops right when it starts to become interesting."

Even though Potter has a solid reputation, I have to admit that I don’t have a clear view or understanding of what her work is actually about but it might have to do with the fact that it was only the 3rd movie I saw from this director. Anyway, even if this movie was barely 70 mins long, it felt more like 2 hours which wasn’t really a good omen and, to be honest, I had a rather hard time to care about the damned thing. I have to admit that the black-and-white cinematography was quite gorgeous, even if it was maybe slightly pretentious and it probably made the whole thing look more artistic than it actually” read more

BradWesley123's Movie Journal- November 2018 (29 movies items)

" DVD- 1hr. 11min. First Viewing I suppose that it was unavoidable that The Party would move through a number of chamber piece cliches; all genres films have a hard time breaking free from conventions, especially ones that rely so heavily on their ensembles. Fortunately, writer-director Sally Potter seems to fully understand this and uses these conventions to her advantage. Her script is littered with fun little one-liners and strong dialogue. Her way with words, coupled with her lingering, somew"
