Sheer brilliance.

Films like this reaffirm my faith in cinema. It is without a doubt one of Al Pacino's least recognised film roles, but nevertheless, one of his most endearing and brilliant.

Dog Day Afternoon recreates the true events of a bank robbery that occurred in August, 1972 in Brooklyn, New York City. Pacino plays Sonny, the brains of what turns out to be a very inept organisation of thieve... read more

Nearly Flawless Classic.

"Dog Day Afternoon" is a nearly flawless classic that combines humor, drama, and a little action into one big masterpiece. In my opinion it is one of Al Pacino's best films ever.

"It started out as a simple bank robbery on a calm afternoon day in New York, and turned into a chaotic circus for everyone to see."

This film tells the true story of a huge and rather comedi... read more

Writing a song or directing a film based on real-life incidents is one of the many tropes they use and we actually have many great examples: Music (Smoke on the Water, 18 & Life, Jeremy) and Movies (Raging Bull, Monster, Schindler's List) Dog Day Afternoon took inspiration from an article from Life magazine reading "Boys in the Bank" and they also described the lead robber, John Wojtowicz as "simi... read more

A New York man and two accomplices are besieged in a bank with all the bank employees after his attempt to rob enough money to pay for his lover's sex change operation goes awry. What results is a two day media circus in which his private life and the humiliation of the police is laid bare for the whole city.

My movie year 2018 (673 movies items)

"13.3. (DVD) Al Pacino ryöstää pankin, jotta voisi kustantaa transuvaimonsa sukupuolenvaihdosleikkauksen – kova pala tämän itkuun purskahtavalle (ja oikein nätille) naispuolisolle, joka nyyhkyttää aviomiehelleen puhelimessa hänen karkaamisestaan ja naimisiin menostaan miehen kanssa. Yhtymiä on Goodbye & Ameniin, joskaan tästä ei löytynyt Oliver Onionsin mestaritason musiikkeja."

80 Queer Movies to See Before You Die... (80 movies items)

"This was an 'unsuspecting' one, the lgbt angle came out of left field and without the skilled writing of Frank Pierson, probably would have convoluted the story. But, as it would happen, not only did it fit, but it made Dog Day Afternoon probably one of the most revolutionary pictures of the entire '70s decade. Adding to the scenario that Sonny had a lover who was... well, I won't dish any spoilers, actually seemed to add further structure to the film's narrative. It also made Sonny a bold and "

Elokuvapäiväkirja 2018 (214 movies items)

"23.1 Sidney Lumet'n Valamiesten ratkaisun ohella tämänkin elokuvan tapahtumat sijoittuvat yhden kuuman ja nihkeän iltapäivän ympärille. Vangitsee hyvin aikakaudelleen tyypillisen levottomuuden tunteen. Pacino räyhää jälleen vakuuttavan teatraalisesti ja Cazale ei tiedä, että Wyoming on osavaltio. Roolihahmot eivät ole kovinkaan kiinnostavia näitä kahta lukuunottamatta, mikä on pettymys erinomaiseen Valamiesten ratkaisuun nähden. Myöskin varsin pitkäveteinen joissain kohdin."

1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die (1970's) (158 movies items)

" Notes: It is definitely one of these movies which actually deserve their terrific reputation. Indeed, it is easily one of the best movies starring Al Pacino, the guy was really on fire back in those days, and he gave here one of his best performances. The fact that it is a true story didn't really interest me but it was just an amazing story and it kept me mesmerized until the end. Indeed, the main character, Sonny Wortzik, is such a deeply flawed but still charismatic guy, he could be one of "
