Awe-inspiring spectacle marred by poor scripting

"We are cancelling the apocalypse!"

Pacific Rim is of a rare breed of summertime blockbuster: it's not a reboot, a remake, a sequel, or a comic book adaptation. Rather, it's an original property, with Mexican director Guillermo del Toro dreaming up a new big-screen universe that pays tribute to the old Kaiju and mecha movies associated with Japan. Del Toro's first feature in five ye... read more

A disappointing movie

Finally, after 5 long years, during which he dropped out from 'The Hobbit' among other things, Guillermo del Toro was definitely back with a new directing effort so I was really eager to check it out. On top of that, when Nick, my step-son, saw the trailer with these huge robots and monsters, he got pretty excited too so we went together and both had some pretty high expectations. Unfortunately, i... read more

An entertaining and dark Del Toro sci-fi.

Pacific Rim is a different blockbuster compared to many that audiences will see in 2013. Considering the fact that it served as Guillermo Del Toro’s first directorial feature in five years, it is also a film that is not a new franchise installment, a remake nor adaptation. The film’s director Guillermo Del Toro has always been a director of dark, visionary style to which he applied in his orig... read more

Description: When an alien attack threatens the Earth's existence, giant robots piloted by humans are deployed to fight off the menace. When legions of monstrous creatures, called Kaiju, start coming out of the sea, starting a war that will kill millions of lives and resources consumed mankind for endless years. To fight the giant Kaiju designed a special type of weapon: huge robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked into a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers provide little defense against the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to res ... (more)

My biggest disappointments in entertainment (104 tv items)

"The so called good live action giant robots movie we expected for ever. To its credit, it's a good movie, the action is cool and the movie makes you care about its characters. Despite all that, I just didn't care about what was happening, there's nothing here I hadn't see on anime before. Next"

Film Journal 2013 (98 movies items)

" After seeing 'Green Street Hooligans', it was pretty much a given that I'd see anything with Charlie Hunnam in it, so....yeah. Okay, I know it's about giant alien sea monsters vs. robots controlled by people. I get that. I'm not going to sit here and tell you it was the best film of the year. It was sooooo cool, though! If you've ever enjoyed a Godzilla film, this one's for you. Somehow they make the movie feel like it's set in the future, but also the past. And the alien/monsters were "

Movies the giraffe watched in 2018: March (29 movies items)

"Re-watch - March 4th I wanted to revisit Pacific Rim since its sequel drops this month, and I especially wanted the kiddo to watch it with me. She really dug it and is on board for its sequel. As I'd dreaded the film doesn't deliver the same experience on a TV at home as it does on the big screen, but overall I still have fun with it and look forward to seeing it again several more times. If it gets another theatrical run I'll definitely catch it there."

"Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro directs a monster movie that is everything the Transformers films should have been. The Earth is under attack from creatures from the deep and it's up to Idris Elba and his team of robot pilots to take them on. Yes, it's giant robots versus giant monsters. What's not to like? While it's wildly ludicrous, it's far too much fun that you tend to ignore just how ridiculous it all gets. Any film that has a robot using a tanker ship as a weapon gets my vote."
