A classic

The main reason why I wanted to watch this flick was because it was included in the list ‘1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die’. To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of such old Westerns and I believe that at least half of them could or should be removed from this otherwise really awesome list. Anyway, in this genre, I have to admit it, this movie was not bad at all and I definitely had a wea... read more

Cinema, at its core, extends the ordinary into the visionary; the exploration of an era or place that is unknown to us, the spectator, offering escapism into a perspicuous horizon, in this case antiquated, that differs wildly from our own. "Johnny Guitar", although wholly removed from the banalities of the everyday and realistic, scathingly probes modern human conflicts, obsessions and rivalries t... read more

Vienna has built a saloon outside of town, and she hopes to build her own town once the railroad is put through, but the townsfolk want her gone. When four men hold up a stagecoach and kill a man the town officials, led by Emma Small, come to the saloon to grab four of Vienna's friends, the Dancin' Kid and his men. Vienna stands strong against them, and is aided by the presence of an old acquaintance of hers, Johnny Guitar, who is not what he seems.

"5.11. 2023 "Johnny Guitar" is a quite unusual western directed by unusual and incredibly creative director Nicholas Ray. During the time of harsh censorship American filmmakers couldn't talk about many relevant issues directly but they had to use metaphors if they wanted to say anything at all. The film has a feminist message rare for its era: women can be as competent but also just as immoral as men. The film is also an allegory of Red Scare and a precise depiction of mass hysteria: Joan Crawf"

" Notes: To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of such old Westerns. Anyway, in this genre, I have to admit it, this movie was not bad at all and I definitely had a weak spot for the damned thing. Indeed, it was especially neat to see a Western with a woman playing the lead and, even though Joan Crawford always thought that Mercedes McCambridge was stealing the show in this movie, I was above all impressed by Crawford after all. Eventually, the biggest issue with this movie (or biggest draw, depend"

Slant's 100 Best Westerns of All Time (100 movies items)

"Nicholas Ray’s Johnny Guitar upends nearly every convention of the traditional western. Its eponymous hero (Sterling Hayden) is a sensitive soul who wields only six strings, not a six-shooter, and contrary to the panoramas for which the genre is known, the vast majority of the film occurs indoors, using the restricted settings to concentrate focus on the characters’ psychological states. But the biggest aberration of the film is that its conflict, propelled by belligerent men seeking to prev"
