Since I’m a huge fan of ‘Freaks’, it was really neat to see another movie directed by Tod Browning. This movie had even more in common with Browning’s classic since it was mostly taking place within a circus and focusing on a (supposedly) armless man. "Absolutely bonkers nonsense that still reaches high emotions. Extremely on brand for what I love in pulpier silent film. Every intertitle mentioning hands create the dumbest damn themes you'll ever see with nothing but hand-hatred, hand-love and hand-cut-offery (along with a very random extra thumb!) to the brims. Browning's visual eye is fucking impeccable which, along with the Cheney close-ups, make this an incredible experience. It also moves like a speeding train. "
