A good movie

Since I really loved โ€˜Nightcrawlerโ€™, I was really eager to see this new directing effort from Dan Gilroy once again starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo and the fact that it was directly available on Netflix was another reason to watch it straight away. Well, it turned to be something really ambitious, some rather weird mix of a satiric look on the Art business world with a surreal horror f... read more

" Netflix- 1hr. 52min. First Viewing There's a solid concept at the center of Velvet Buzzsaw, with the art world ripe for a solid satire (hell, the title Velvet Buzzsaw is pretty damn great), and horror/satire has become a rather booming genre as of late (look at what Jordan Peele's been doing). Unfortunately, writer/director Dan Gilroy doesn't know how to do two important things; satire and horror. He, also, doesn't come close to merging them in a cohesive way. He's probably better in the horror"

" Not entirely successful as a satire of the art world or as a horror/thriller. For that it's too obvious and too lacking in substance for it to fully work as a satire. It has a statement, but beyond that, there's not really anything too it. As a horror/thriller it's quite simply too dull. It never manages to reach any sort of intensity. Instead it moves at a pretty stale and monotonous tempo that is heightened by its flat look. It does kinda feel like that was done purposely, but the end result "

" I almost didn't give this one a chance, due to the overwhelmingly negative reception from the horror community. But I knew that I had to see a film this controversial, and form my own opinion. Sadly, I can now say that most of what you're hearing about this film is absolutely true. It's baffling how it turned out this way, what with such a fantastic cast and a director riding on the success of "Nightcrawler", one of the most revered independent films of this decade. Throw in an original a"

Film Journal 2019 (225 movies items)

"This film is at least two things: A tepid horror film with the execution of a sub-par 90s slasher with snazzier visual effects (that still shorthand the experience by being very standard CGI for what is a high concept) and a lame excuse of a satire on the monetization of art. It is, however, a third thing, and something that actually feels real and fresh: Tired and new artists respoding to a work that is like their, but completely not like theirs. The few scenes featuring John Malkovich and Dave"
