The history of humanity is a sad one, to say the least. With a legacy of endless strife, millennia of meaningless conflict have escalated war to the stars. And yet, while mankind falls into the same pitfalls without resolution in sight, the ambitions of men are not bound by such follies. In the midst of 150 of one such struggle, two brilliant individuals arise. One is Admiral Yang Wen Li, a scholar whose integrity shall inspire the hearts of a failing nation. The other is Count Reinhard vom Lohengramm, a charismatic leader with dreams of conquest that exceed those of his pathetic empire’s. The journey these two are about to embark on is one to make history. And neither are ready to know where that journey will take them.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is not just the anime that I love the most, it's also one of the best anime ever made in my opinion. The people who handled this story did it with such levels of care and mauturity that are unparalleled even today. The cast of characters is large and diverse and each character holds an importance to the story, I don't see this anime as a battle between good and evil but rather a battle between two visions, because this is a political tale and the charaters use politics to achieve their goals you can't say that there's a definite bad or a definite good side, both sides come with their share of flaws. You would think that for an anime that is as serious as this you won't be too thrilled but this show is very intense and its intensity comes in different shapes. Now, is this anime perfect? nope there's no such thing but it did the best job in my opinion in terms of worldbuilding, characters and plot. This OVA has 110 episodes so this might discourage the curious anime fans to sit through it but if you have the time to watch a long series don't overlook this one.

Monster (2004)
Genre : Drama,Police,Detective,Psychological thriller,Mystery

Kenzou Tenma, a brilliant Japanese brain surgeon working in Germany, saves the life of a small boy who has been shot in the head. Little does he know that doing so would destroy his entire career at the hospital and that his fiancé would leave him. When the hospital director and doctors of the hospital staff are suddenly murdered, he gets a second chance but also renders him as the main suspect to the murders. Life goes on for Tenma as he saves people at the hospital, and he goes back to the joy of being a surgeon again.
Years later, an injured thief gets brought to the hospital. After Tenma saves his life, he finds out that the thief is involved with the rising count of serial murders happening in Germany. Suddenly Tenma is involved in it all when the little boy, who is now a young man, turns up and kills the thief in cold blood right in front of Tenma. Now Tenma must clear his name, find out more about the boy he saved in the past, and reevaluate what the value of life is.
Monster is one of a kind,it's extremely rare to come across something this good, first because of the mature storyline and second because of the amazing suspense and surprising intelligence.
The protagonist is truly honorable and likeable and gosh this series has an incredible set of supporting characters, each one is well developed and has a masterfully crafted background story, they might seem irrelevant at first but each one of them plays a major role in the story.
And don't even get me started on the main antagonist,he deserves the title of the best antagonist of all-time,he's even better than the infamous Hannibal Lecter, you might find this comparison odd at first but you must watch the show to find out why I made this specific comparison.
both anime and non-anime fans should watch this,it's an amazing experience and it's so original,it kept me on the edge of my seat most of the time.

Movie

Genre: Tragedy, Drama

This masterpiece delivers an anti-war message in such a manner that puts most war anime to shame. This is one of the most realistic anime out there since it portrays perfectly the conditions of countries at war, in this case WWII. The story is told from the point of view of a teenage boy and his little sister who were born in a very cruel era.
Prepare to be greatly depressed with this anime as it will destroy your heart brutally and will never heal it, this story is harsh on both the characters and viewers, I never cared for any character as much as I cared for the two protagonists of this movie.

This anime can only be described as a work of art, you either hate it or you love it. This is an alternate ending to the popular mecha deconstruction Neon Genesis Evangelion that was made in order to calm the fans who completely lost their minds when the 2 final episodes of Evangelion aired since they created such a massive amount of controversy. The first half of this movie delivers some intense battles that remind us of why we love Evangelion; the second half is a genre on its own, perhaps the second half of this movie is the most defining moment in anime since it took it to a level above everything else, my jaw dropped while I was watching the second half of this movie, it shows what anime is capable of in a brilliant manner, again, you either loved it or you hated it, people should check out this movie eventhough it's not easy to understand simply because I guarantee that they will never see something like this again, ever.

Genre : Sci-Fi, Comedy, Thriller

The story revolves around a self-proclaimed mad scientist who believes that he's being watched by a secret organization since he is attempting to travel through time. The characters add such a great magic to this show and their interactions are absolutely hilarious!
This is the most carefully crafted time-travel show I've ever watched since it is based on actual theories. Whether it's the story, the characters or the humour, there will be something in this show that will catch your attention and make you wanna keep watching, heck when I started watching it I kept coming back only for the laughs, I didn't imagine that the plot would be so interesting until it hit me on the face, which only got me more excited than I already was.
Ever heard about "the butterfly effect" ? This show does a fantastic job at exploring this concept

Well what can I say that has not already been said about this anime ? when I finished watching Fullmetal alchemist and read an article about another anime adaptation for it based on the manga I immediatly started watching this ,and boy ,I was not disappointed,Hiromu Arakawa proved that she is one of the greatest manga artists of all-time with this work, and of course the staff of studio bones couldn't have made a better anime adaptation for Arakawa's outstanding manga.
The story follows Edward and Alphonse Elric, two alchemist brothers who are searching for the legendary catalyst called the Philosopher's Stone, a powerful object which would allow them to recover their bodies (which were lost in an attempt to bring their mother back to life through alchemy).
The plot of this series is incredible and filled with some unbelievable twists, the characters are the strongest aspect of this series to me since they're well-developed and each of them (even the least important ones)shine at least once throughout the series, and boy the action is just top-notch without exaggerating,it has also its fair amount of depth, drama and philosophy, the humour was well-applied too !
This series was always striving for perfection since the first episode and it actually achieved it through numerous memorable scenes and the main goals of each of the characters seemed pretty down-to-earth even for the main antagonist despite the fact that he sounded high and mighty throughout the series.
Eventhough this anime has 64 episodes(a number that might drive some potential fans away),it sounded pretty short and almost every episode makes you desperate for more when it ends.
I could go on and on about how awesome this anime is but I can't do it without spoiling the series.

This anime is a true epic, it's human drama in its rawest form and it deeply touched upon a variety of subjects such as the desire to belong and our constant yearning for peace and freedom. It was a gorgeous spectacle from the beginning and it remained consistently brilliant until the end. Impressive world-building and character development and mind-blowing plot-twists. it is so incredible that not a single second felt wasted.

14 year-old Madoka Kaname has a dream in which a dark haired girl is struggling against an evil force. As Madoka wakes up and goes to school that morning, she sees the very same girl, Homura Akemi, enrol in her class. Even stranger, Homura seems to know Madoka and later confronts her in the hallway about whether she cares for her friends or not, saying she should stay how she is or else she risks losing everything. After school, whilst visiting a record store with her friend, Sayaka Miki, Madoka hears a voice calling for help. Following it to a storage room, she finds a small creature named Kyubey being attacked by Homura. As Homura insists that she hand Kyubey over, Sayaka helps Madoka and Kyubey escape. They are then caught in a strange illusion and approached by more strange creatures, but are rescued by another girl named Mami Tomoe, who transforms into a magical girl and fights them off, dispelling the illusion. After confronting Homura, Mami heals Kyubey, who wishes to form a contract with Madoka and Sayaka to make them magical girls.
It took me only one sitting to finish watching this entire show because it was too good from start to finish. I haven't watched anything quite like this before, the dialogue here is one of the best in anime because every conversation is straight to the point and helps move the plot forward, a lot of the conversations were thought-provoking too so they were really interesting. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen at all because there was something happening every second. This is Gen Urobuchi's best work to date in my opinion and it says a lot since the guy is a very talented writer and I believe that he hasn't reached his prime yet so I'm looking forward to his next works.

Genre: Occult detective

If there is ever an anime that should be called beautiful then it's definitely this one. The animation is brilliant, the stories are beautifully written, the soundtrack is spot on and it makes you feel relaxed. Once you start watching this it will pull you completely towards its mysterious universe. The character development is also excellent considering that this is an episodic anime and every episode revolves around new secondary characters. The Mushi are such fascinating creatures and it's just so thrilling to learn more about them.

Gankutsuou is an anime based off a loose adaptation of the novel, The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas. It tells the story of Albert Morcerf, a young aristocrat who happens to befriend a wealthy nobleman, known as The Count of Monte Cristo, through a series of bizarre events. Fascinated by the Count's charm, Albert invites him to meet his friends and family, all of whom happen to be part of the upper class society of Paris, France. Unfortunately, little does Albert realize that the Count has ulterior motives in mind.
This anime might be just an adaptation but the level of creativity the creators came up with is strikingly brilliant. The graphics were especially spectacular but be careful they might distract you at times (that's how attractive they are). The writors kept the names of the characters as they were in the novel and the main plot points remained more or less as they were in the novel. But aside from the futuristic setting and the mecha (yeah there's a bit of mecha too) the story takes a more or less different direction near the end, and oh I'm glad it did. Because the creators knew what they were doing I loved the changes they introduced to the story.
I knew this was going to become one of my favourite series of all-time immediately after I started watching the first episode.

In a future Japan there exists a picturesque village barred from the outside world. The rulers of this village possess psychokinetic powers called cantus. After awakening to her own powers, Watanabe Saki enters the Zenjin Academy to train alongside several of her friends. This peaceful existence soon comes to an end after a certain incident, as Saki and her friends learn about the dark and extensive history behind their society. Not everything is at seems, and humanity is hanging on but a knife’s edge.
This anime was surprisingly good. I watched this on a whim and I ended up being completely blown away by it. The setting is unique and interesting to explore.
You can consider this the female version of Psycho-Pass although this is more superior. A great deal of mystery surrounds this world and we learn the secrets behind it bits by bits along with our protagonists throughout the run of the series and trust me the revelations are breathtaking and they keep coming until the very end of the series. Also we get to accompany the main characters from their childhood to their adulthood as the story is told from their point of view. There's really nothing bad I can say about this show, it was a joy to watch from start to finish.

Cowboy Bebop (1998)
Genre: Action, Comedy, Space Western, Neo-Noir

This anime is brilliant and it has something for everyone! The atmosphere pulls you in the moment you start watching this show, the soundtrack fits every scene perfectly and it's just so damn good. For an episodic show the episodes were very enjoyable aside from 4 or 5 episodes that didn't entertain me as much as the other ones did. I'd also like to point out that the characters are brilliantly written and just too cool! their interactions didn't feel forced at all which is a big plus in my opinion. This anime isn't the most thrilling or thought-provoking but it's a great example of a show that knows exactly what it wants to be.

This anime might seem random at first,I mean,we have gangs, thieves, professional assassins, immortals, journalists and alchemists who are put into chaotic situations that might seem unrelated at first.
The plot is one of the most original plots, and each character is unique and memorable especially Miria and Isaac, the eccentric robbers! I love these two so much because they manage to make me joyful whenever they appear on screen.
The main events take place in a mysterious train called the Flying pussyfoot, the passengers of the train suddenly start dying and it seems that the deaths are connected to the legend of railtracer.
The beginning might sound confusing but everything becomes clear eventually.

Kino no Tabi is fascinating. There is something about stories that are based on journies that I adore, so the moment I heard about this anime I knew I had to watch it, and this series far exceeded my expectations too. This show explores multiple aspects of human nature through Kino and her motorcycle Hermes; They travel to different places and meet different kinds of people but "philosophical" journey would be the more appropriate word to describe their journey as the setting in most episodes is metaphorical and there are a lot of messages carried in them. I can praise this anime non-stop and I still wouldn't be able to express how fascinated I was by it.

Flag (2006)
Genre: Drama, Action, Mecha, War, fictional documentary

In 20xx, a civil war broke out in a small country in Asia in spite of the dispatch of UN forces. But a picture taken by accident in the battle field accelerates the peace process. It is a picture of a flag which became the symbol of peace. However, just before the peace agreement is achieved, the flag is robbed by an armed extremist group in order to obstruct the truce. The UN decides to send SDC (Special Development Command) and a cameraman to record their activities. That cameraman is Shirasu Saeko - the cameraman who took the picture of the flag. Armed with the HAVWC (High Agility Versatile Weapon Carrier), Saeko documents their journey.
Usually, when you're watching a politically driven show or a documentary the story is told from one point of view (or at least one point of view is dominent). This story is told from multiple points of view and to make this experience even more unique all of it is shown through the lens of the camera.
This show has more than enough to set a captivating atmosphere, you'll basically feel like you're living in Uddiyana and witnessing everything that's happening from there. Suprisingly enough this is not a very well-known anime!
But let me warn you before you decide to make this the next thing to watch: this is NOT by any means a character-driven show so if you're into this kind of shows I don't recommend this for you, also if you're looking for intense action/mecha scenes you'll be very disappointed too as it's not the main focus of this show. But anyone who's looking for something so unique and VERY unconventional to watch will love the heck out of this (which is my case).

Outstanding level of storytelling, fantastic visuals (on par with Last Exile), inspiring characters and oh it was an incredibly heartfelt journey.

This time, the responsibility falls on Chagum, the Second Prince of the New Yogo Empire. The Emperor, fearing that the spirit's possession of Chagum could destroy the prestige of the royal family, attempts to have Chagum killed. Nana (2006)
Genre: Drama, Comedy, Romance, Music

Two girls who share the same name meet on the train to Tokyo and become friends. One is aspiring to become a successful singer while the other one is searching for happiness in the arms of her loved one.
It's so nice to watch something that can make you deeply care for the characters: their hardships, their dreams, their encounters, and simply the way they live their daily lives...this show manages to do everything with style, even the romance is very well portrayed and there are absolutely no clichés you can find here.
When you laugh whenever a character is laughing and get your heart broken whenever a character is going through a hardship you realize you're watching something amazing.
Too bad the sudden illness of the mangaka made the manga go on hiatus thus making the anime end without a conclusion(weirdly enough, the last episode was very satisfying to me).

The rules of alchemy state that to gain something, one must lose something of equal value. Alchemy is the process of taking apart and reconstructing an object into a different entity, with the rules of alchemy to govern this procedure. However, there exists an object that can bring any alchemist above these rules, the object known as the Philosopher's Stone. The young Edward Elric is a particularly talented alchemist who through an accident years back lost his younger brother Alphonse and one of his legs. Sacrificing one of his arms as well, he used alchemy to bind his brother's soul to a suit of armor. This lead to the beginning of their journey to restore their bodies, in search for the legendary Philosopher's Stone.
When Fullmetal Alchemist aired in 2003,it was surrounded by an incredible amount of hype, this is truly deserving the title of one of the most influential anime series of All-time.
While it doesn't follow the manga (except some episodes of the series' first half),it has its unique brilliant story, the bond that the Elric brothers share has touched me very deeply and I truly grew attached to them, this series was not afraid of showing us how cruel life can be sometimes troughout the numerous sufferings and struggles of the characters with themselves and each other, and while most of the series of the genre shy away from showing us the true horrors of war, this show doesn't,and the messages and emotions conveyed throughout this show are absolutely wonderful.
This was a very touching experience and I can rewatch this anime for multiple times without ever getting bored.

An anime with a main evil protagonist,or should I call him antagonist? it doesn't matter,Yagami Light is a character that proved that not all the main characters of anime must be good-natured.Death note is a mixture of supernatural and crime, where the main characters are incredibly smart:a popular detective who's trying to outsmart his suspect, and a suspect who's trying to outsmart the detective,it's basically a cat and mouse game where there can be only one winner. If you like psychology and reflection, you should watch this anime, the plot is brilliant and the characters make it even more interesting.this is a must-watch to all anime fans out there.

Tomoya Okazaki was labelled as a delinquent at his school at the beginning (or the prequel to this series if you want to since AS is a sequel to Clannad),however his life changes when he meets Nagisa Furukawa,a shy girl who slowly forms bonds of friendship with several schoolmates of hers with the help of Tomoya.
The first half of After story continues from where its prequel left off, focusing mostly on the beautiful background stories of Nagisa's and Tomoya's classmates, however, the focus shifts back to Tomoya and Nagisa in the second half.
This is a slice of life anime that is mixed with some supernatural elements,it has some memorable stories and soundtracks that really were outstanding as we accompany Tomoya while he's trying to make peace with his past and adapting to the several changes he goes through in his life.
I'm not shy to admit that this show really made me cry especially its second half.

Genre : Adventure, Mystery

From the creator of Monster comes a story about the adventures of Taichi Keaton, a half-British half-Japanese archeologist and SAS veteran of the Falklands War who solves mysteries and investigates insurance fraud for Lloyd's around the world. While its younger brother had an overarching plot that slowly developed into something of epic proportions, this one chose a rather episodic and more down-to-earth formula of storytelling. But if there is anything that both anime have in common, then it would be the excellent way of storytelling that really fleshes out its universe and characters so well.

Everything about this anime is near flawless,The story is brilliant and so original even the Episodes' titles are original since each title was inspired by a chess move!
This show has 26 Episodes, none of these Episodes had a dull moment, the first 12 Episodes throw questions without answering them and they all end with major cliffhangers that would make you want to start watching the next Episode immediately.Luckily, all the questions get answered in the second half of the series.
The graphics are gorgeous especially considering that this anime was actually made in 2003!
The characters were believable in both their actions and their motivations and they are well-developed too.
This might remind you a bit of Miyazaki's Nausicaa of the valley of the wind since they're kind of similar.
The story revolves around Claus and Lavi, two Vanship pilots who dream of flying a dangerous stretch of space known as the "Grand Stream" like their fathers before them. A show that will make you reflect deeply upon human nature and wonder whether or not human beigns are capable of living in a perfect society, a society without crime, can something this big be achieved without making a huge sacrifice? like the identity and free will of people maybe? and could we be satisfied if we ever get controlled by a system that claims to be the highest authority and the most flawless "being" that has ever existed? How would we feel if something other than ourselves would decide for us the most suitable way to live our lives?

The message this anime delivers is quite simple: take it easy in life.
The way we tend to take every little thing in life very seriously does nothing but increasing our stress level beyond what we can take so we end up destroying our lives slowly and when we finally realize it it's often too late to go back.
Life is not as complicated as we make it out to be, we're just prisoners of our own minds.

This one had the same impact on me as Madoka Magica and The End of Evangelion, I loved how it explored the theme of sacrifice through the eyes of 15 individuals, the background stories of the characters were heartfelt and thought-provoking. This show needs more recognition.

This might seem just like an ordinary racing show if you read the title, it's not even very popular in Japan since it's not a 100% japanese (frensh-japanese collaboration), but never judge a book by its cover!
The story revolves around a girl named Eva who found herself racing in an other planet to decide the fate of earth after a series of events.
The show deals with a variety of themes and the races are extremely diverse and fun to watch, of course for most of the time only half of the episodes focus on racing, the other half focuses on developing the characters. I like to watch something with a fair amount of depth and this anime delivers quite a lot in this department.

This anime is truly underrated, it has a very superb quality of storytelling, it builds itself around a lot of mysteries and events that seem unrelated in the early episodes but the way it pieces all the elements of the story together is commendable. Neither the title nor the art style can serve to give the viewers the right idea about what they're getting themselves into, because I think those were the main reasons this gem went unnoticed since it truly shines with its story, it also has some of the most beautiful soundtrack. All in all Fantastic Children is truly one of a kind.

One of the easiest anime to get into, keep in mind that it is currently in hiatus and it has a total of 99 episodes so far! I was aware of this fact when I decided to give it a try and surprisingly this amount of episodes sounded too short since I found myself marathoning it whenever I had the chance because it was very enjoyable. It has excellent character development and it kinda gives off a motivational vibe because it focuses on a bunch of characters working really hard to achieve their dreams and facing the different obstacles that come their way. This is an anime that you simply can't get enough of.

Ping Pong just went beyond all my expectations, I heard a lot of people praising it and I started watching it with average expectations but I must say this one has truly impressed me, a lot of people would be put off by the art style though since it's not conventional but I think I wouldn't have enjoyed it this much if it weren't for the art style since I believe it just suits it wonderfully. We also have a dynamic and enjoyable cast of characters that evolved greatly in the span of 11 episodes, I think even the viewers who dislike the sports genre would enjoy this because it was more focused on the characters than ping pong.

One of the most satisfying anime ever. Most anime wish they were this compelling. A loveable cast of characters and a story that is larger than life. It has a slow beginning but as you watch more episodes you'll realize how important the early episodes are. This is the embodiment of everything that I love about anime.

Shiki is an example that more horror anime should follow. Rare are those shows that feature a large cast of characters and still manage to flesh out almost every single one them. This anime brought its world to life in a praiseworthy way. The suspense and build up were excellent and the climax was very satisfying.

An encounter between a girl and a boy who lost his memory marks the beginning of a series of events that would change both of their lives as they try to uncover the mystery behind the boy's past only to discover he's part of something that involves the entire nation of Japan.
Did you ever wonder what would you do if you were given the power to decide the fate of an entire nation? I wouldn't go into details since I don't want to spoil anything about this show but it pretty much revolves around this question. This show is really unique in the way the story is told and the characters are presented, sure there are other shows with similar themes but this anime handled this kind of theme with a different approach which felt really refreshing. I loved the suspense, it reigned over the show in a brilliant way, also the main protagonist is a really interesting guy.
Make sure you watch the movies after you finish watching the series since they conclude the story.

Well, this is basically my list, not "the" list, I ranked the shows based on how much I enjoyed them, the overall impact they had on me and how memorable they are in my opinion, the keyword here is opinion, it's not an objective list, and therefore should not be seen as such.
