Ever since I was a little kid, I've always been more fascinated with depictions of the far future in cinema, than historical movies. I always found it puzzling why I seemed the only one excited about this. 'Future'-films regularly get laughed at, perhaps because conventional skeptics lack imagination... yet are ultimately always proven wrong. In the past, the very same skeptics probably would have laughed at the idea that we'd have cars that run on water, drones that carry our mail--running 24/7 through the sky, and phones that talk back to us and practically run every mundane aspect of our lives. Time only moves in one direction, and it does no harm to once in a while, dream our very evolution into existence. However, history has proven more often than not, our future in cinema, is rarely, if ever... ideal.
THE RULES:
Every voter gets to list 10 films. Your #1 gets 10 points while your #10 gets 1 point. You get the idea!
There are NO SET LIMITS on how many times you may play or how many times you may submit the same movie(s) when you do. The idea is to keep up traffic all year round. Go nuts!
THE SPECIFICATIONS:
As any intelligent well-researched individual will tell you... there is no such thing as a utopia. It couldn't exist because there's no logical blueprint for 8 billion people on the planet, getting along in perfect unison. Somebody ultimately gets marginalized in the process.
The term dystopia, refers to the concept of a FUNCTIONAL futuristic society, while ultimately seeming 'off' somehow? Or, look at it this way--perhaps EVERYTHING'S off, but only one dude, or dudette, in the movie happens to see it. This list is ultimately, about picking your top favorite dystopian visions in cinema. Futures that don't quite pan out, yet our civilization it seems, keeps creeping ever and ever closer toward, in the world of science and economics. (I will however, accept dystopian movies that depict just flat out 'ridiculous' warped-future scenarios.)
THE REASONS:
(For those whom haven't seen my previous lists) My reasons for making this list are simple:
1) I have no life.
2) What life I DO have, it helps get my mind off things.
and 3) It helps the Listal community tell it like it is. Also, gives me great tips for 'movie night'.
My reasons for lifting the voting bans are in an attempt to more accurately gauge public opinion, plus, I've found in the past that whenever I do regular poll lists, my friends and readers show me love in the opening first few weeks, then quickly get bored and move on. This way, I hope I can keep things interesting for as long as possible...
