It's been said, most coming-of-age movies are often sad, bleak, or just uncomfortable to sit through, so a lot of more action-attuned moviegoers tend to avoid them, unless somebody makes them sit through one. This is unfortunate, since most common moviegoers are missing the underlining point entirely! We live in a common PC-obsessed society, especially in the West where things have become ludicrous. Common sense terms such as girl & boy/male & female, are being outlawed as being labeled 'insensitive'. We've become a more sensitively-attuned modern society yet, this does nothing to make young people any less screwed up than they already were, or worse yet, continue this social dysfunction, right up into adulthood.
My observation, this is because we as a society, have lost our inherent 'rites of passage' in our culture. Children don't know how to grow up, because there's nothing and no one anymore that can seemingly teach them. Coming-of-age cinema, thus, is often bleak because Nature, it seems, is poised to step in and take charge. And to the down-trodden and commonly forsaken, where no rite of passage may be offered by humanity, Nature will often step in and FORCE a rite of passage to occur. Sometimes resulting in brutal consequences...
THE RULES:
All voters may be given 10 movies to present at a time. Your #1 pick gets 10 points while your #10 pick gets 1 point. You get the idea!
There are NO SET LIMITS to how many times you may play, or how many times you may vote for the same film. The idea is to generate consistent year-round traffic on the list. Go nuts!
THE SPECIFICATIONS:
This list is exclusive to the 'coming-of-age' genre. An important sub-genre to the history of cinema. Some coming-of-age stories can be sad, while others cheer us up. The point is, a coming-of-age term is symbolic of when a child, regardless of what age, takes those unsolicited first baby steps toward becoming a functional adult, or simply reaching emotional maturity. It goes without saying that most 'coming-out' films are often associated with a 'coming-of-age' tale also, because people who go through that, actually experience TWO coming-of-age, rites of passage...
THE REASONS:
(For those who haven't seen my previous lists) My reasons for making this list are simple:
1) I have no life.
2) What life I DO have, it helps take my mind off things.
and 3) Helps give me tips for 'movie night', and offers the Listal community a platform to voice an opinion.
I lifted all the voting restrictions cause through experience, I've found in the past most of the people who participate in my poll lists, tend to show my luv in the first few weeks, then quickly lose interest. Thought I would generate more traffic this way?
