Among the best Scorsese has to offer

In this 1982 film directed by Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, known for his roles in a few other Scorsese flicks, enters once again as middle aged-wannabe comedian Rupert Pupkin. The De Niro/Scorsese collaboration happens to be one of the greatest film teams of all-time, and easily one of my personal favorites. Together, they can do magical things, as portrayed for nearly 40 years, and beginning ... read more

Scorsese goes comedy...

Despite that this film is a comedy from the master of gangster/crime films Martin Scorsese, I knew I was going to like this one it is a collaboration with Scorsese and De Niro. Also, Scorsese would have at least made a clever comedy. This film does have that rebel/crime within it because Rupert Pupkin is a stand up comedian and a bit of a criminal too. The King Of Comedy is actually the nickname o... read more

A very good movie

When is the last time you saw a good movie starring Robert De Niro? I keep watching most of his new movies but most of it is just crap and after all this disappointment, it was time to rewatch a good old flick to redeem the guy. Among all the masterpieces De Niro and Scorsese made together, it is one of the least appreciated ones and it was a flop when it came out which is not really surprising. I... read more

Rupert Pupkin is obsessed with becoming a comedy great. However, when he confronts his idol, talk show host Jerry Langford, with a plea to perform on the Jerry's show, he is only given the run-around. He does not give up, however, but persists in stalking Jerry until he gets what he wants. Eventually he must team up with his psychotic Langford-obsessed friend Masha to kidnap the talk show host in hopes of finally getting to perform his stand-up routine.

"Первые ~40 минут нужно превозмочь, затем становится интересно. Пожалуй, первый фильм Скорсезе, из тех что я видел, который мне однозначно понравился. Я не смотрел нового Джокера, но мне уже кажется что последний скопирован с Короля комедии"

Film Journal 2019 (225 movies items)

"The first hour of The King of Comedy that plays out like something Ruben Östlund or Todd Solondz would make nowadays is maybe some of the best filmmaking Scorsese has ever partook in as an endless barrage of awkward and embarrassing social situations manage to create a somewhat complex idiot character despite his one-minded and thoroughly unsympathetic nature. The second half of the film slightly betrays this by going the route of a thriller and media critique with a more traditionally comedic "

" Scorsese and De Niro are triumphant again in this drama about a comedian who isn't a comedian, only in his fantasies... or in crime."
