The Heiress

The Heiress is a prime example of the kind of literary adaptations that Hollywood once trafficked in. Films that fashioned intelligent frameworks from great novels allowing for a kind of cinematic poetry between the finely honed performances and staid melodrama, a type of cinematic language that no longer exists. Description: In 1840's New York Catherine lives with her father, Dr. Sloper. Her mother died some years before, and Dr. Sloper still idolizers her, and never misses an opportunity to compare her daughter to her -- a comparison the daughter can never win. When Morris Townsend, a handsome but penniless young man, comes along, and woos and wins his daughter's heart, Dr. Sloper is sure that he is after her considerable inheritance, and opposes their marriage. Dr. Sloper takes his daughter to Europe in hopes she will forget Morris, but she does not. After Catherine returns to New York, the young lovers plan to elope. Dr. Sloper threatens to disin ... Mustanaamio7's Movie Diary 2019 (251 movies items)

"2.5. 2019 "The Heiress", one of the greatest films by William Wyler, looks like another standard melodrama that tells about class differences and romance, but it truly is something else. It can't be classified as a romantic film since there's no genuine romance in the film. "The Heiress" is more like an analysis of morally corrupt society instead of a traditional melodrama. A strict and cynical father wastes all of his time on thinking about his deceased wife. His daughter falls in love with a"

100 Greatest Golden Age Hollywood Films (100 movies items)

"Of all the classic Hollywood directors, William Wyler was always one of my least favourite. Although he undoubtedly knew how to direct the hell out of a scene, with almost every one of his films containing a sequence that has wowed me, overall his choice of material has dated considerably. From melodramas like 'Jezebel' and 'Dodsworth' through wartime tales like 'Mrs. Miniver' and 'The Best Years of Our Lives' to epics like 'Ben Hur', Wyler's films are of their time in a manner that feels creaky "

The Heiress

“The Heiress is a prime example of the kind of literary adaptations that Hollywood once trafficked in. Films that fashioned intelligent frameworks from great novels allowing for a kind of cinematic poetry between the finely honed performances and staid melodrama, a type of cinematic language that no longer exists. The Heiress is a slow-burning character study, following one woman’s transition from anxious, sweet spinster into a harder persona allowing star Olivia de Havilland to give the greatest performance of her storied career.   The Heiress’ story is simple, Catherine Sloper (de Havilland) lives with her widower father (Ralph Richardson) and aunt (Miriam Hopkins), forever begging her father to love her while accepting his repeated emotional abuse and rejection.
