A surprise. Not only McKellen is astonishing; Condon is ok in each confrontation between Holmes and everybody else. A tupical sherlockian inductive thriller within another drama.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Ian McKellen, I thought I might as well check it out. “I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Ian McKellen, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, by now, I think I have seen my share of Sherlock Holmes movies and the whole gimmick of making the character older was only mildly interesting in my opinion. At least, McKellen delivered another fine performance and I have to admit that it was interesting to see one of the smartest characters ever created struggling with senility. On the other hand, the lovely and seriously talented Laura Linney was stuck playing such a boring and thankless part. On top of that, it didn’t make much sense that she would be so bothered by the fact that her son would get along so well with such a great mind. I mean, she was acting as if Holmes was some ki” read more

"1.1 93 years old and suffering from dementia, Sherlock Holmes is dealing with severe guilt but can no longer recall what caused it, so he turns to writing to remember. With such a promising premise, it's a real pitty that the film's plot is duller than dishwater. "

2015 Films - Best to Worst (84 movies items)

" If there was one iconic role that Ian McKellen just had to play, it certainly was Sherlock Holmes and quite naturally, he embraces that role with a sincerity that matches him and the film quite well. This is not your typical grand-scale Sherlock Holmes story. He doesn't have a major case to solve. Instead it's a much smaller film that gives it entire focus to him as a character in his later years. Which was quite refreshing. It does move slowly and while it is a fascinating watch, in the end, "
