Wally, a struggling playwright, has fallen back on acting. He is narrating his story all through the movie. He is on his way to meet an acquaintance he hasn't seen in years, Andre, a former actor and director, who has left theater. The entire movie takes place while the two men are having dinner, and discuss a variety of subjects.

Isn't it weird that Wallace Shawn's character in this film is also named Wallace Shawn? heeheehee. Basically, My Dinner With Andre has no plot to speak of. It is Wallace having a dinner / conversation with Andre Gregory. They don't generally play themselves but something that can be said as a reel version of their real self. If you would have told me that my new litmus test would be a film consisting of a conversation between theater director Andre Gregory and playwright Wallace Shawn, I probably would have believed you, honestly, but only after some serious discussion--which is exactly what this movie is so great at.
