“Saw 2020's 'Mulan' as a massive Disney fan. Although their recent live action offerings are very mixed and none are as good as the originals, many of their animated films are fine examples of how to do animation right. Looking at the title, the advertising and that seeing it was made by Disney, it is very easy to think that this is another one of the live action remakes and it is easy why it has been critiqued as one. Part of me was really psyched being somebody who loves the 1998 film, but also worried when seeing the hate for the film and for the lead actress.
When seeing 'Mulan', it didn't actually strike me as a live action remake and doesn't have an awful lot of Disney in sight. Other than the title and references to the score of the 1998 film embedded in this one. Instead t” read more

" Director: Niki Caro Her 7th Movie. My 4th movie watched from the director. I think there are some very nice moments in this live-action take on Disney's version of the story of Mulan, but it's mostly forgettable. It's blatantly Disneyfied and seems so generic and watered-down that I can't help but find it to be an expensive wasted opportunity. I went into this thinking this was actually going to a be remake of an animated Disney movie that was going to be enough of a departure, and that c"

"And the Nominees are... *Alexandra Byrne- Emma. *Bina Daigeler- Mulan *Massimo Cantini Parrini- Pinocchio *Ann Roth- Ma Rainey's Black Bottom *Trish Summerville- Mank And the Oscar goes to... Roth's taken every costumes award thus far (CDG, BAFTA, Critics Choice), so she's in the driver's seat here. I wouldn't rule out Emma.'s 1810s, pastel-tinged work sneaking in, though the fact that it couldn't win at BAFTA makes it an unlikely surprise. Mank, too, has potential. Power Rankings 1. Ma Ra"

"Another useless remake from version that already succeeded by its own and didn't need a live action remake by deleting that good humor, chilling score and catchy songs, but more importantly, leaving out one of the most important as well as lovable character, what made the original cartoon great and one of my favorites from Disney. Visually nice looking film. Gorgeous sets and costumes were colorful add and fight choreography to amaze by, but sadly, it wasn't enough to make it any better."
“Even though this movie didn’t get much love when it was released (it has a rather weak 5.5 rating on IMDb), since this movie was finally available for free on Disney+, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, I thought it was a decent live-action adaptation but, to be honest, not much than that. I mean, Disney at least did their best to be respectful by avoiding any whitewashing and by toning down most of the humor displayed in the animated version (so no Mushu here). In fact, the first half was fairly identical which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing but they could have fleshed out to the supporting characters. Eventually, the only major deviation was to make Mulan revealing her true identity instead of being discovered more or less by accident. Even though I understood this choice ” read more
