Since I kept hearing some great things about this flick and since I have always been a huge fan of Martin Scorsese’s work, I was really eager to check this flick and I had some rather high expectations. Basically, after making all those gangsters flicks, Scorsese decided to make for the first time a 'family' feature but, to be honest, in contrary to what most of the critics and viewers seemed to... read more

"I'd imagine the whole world was one big machine. Machines never come with any extra parts, you know. They always come with the exact amount they need. So I figured, if the entire world was one big machine, I couldn't be an extra part. I had to be here for some reason."

With its PG rating, 2011's Hugo is the first Martin Scorsese project that could be considered a kids movie. Howeve... read more

Throughout his 30+ year career as a film director, Martin Scorsese has gone on to make feature films that have become some of the most violent and sinister crime films in the history of cinema from the likes of Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Departed and Cape Fear. However, in 2011 he makes something entirely different that is beyond anything that he has ever done, and although he has t... read more

Hugo is an orphan boy living in the walls of a train station in 1930s Paris. He learned to fix clocks and other gadgets from his father and uncle which he puts to use keeping the train station clocks running. The only thing that he has left that connects him to his dead father is an automaton that doesn't work without a special key.

It's so funny that, almost 10 years, I think I finally understood what doudouce55 actually meant with 'The direction was terrible'. Back then, I was shocked because it was directed by Martin Scorses

"In order to understand the significance of Martin Scorsese’s "Hugo," I want to compare and contrast Hugo Cabret’s life and the director’s childhood. Hugo (Asa Butterfield), in the film, grew up with a widowed clockmaker in Paris before his father perished in a fire. Hugo lived with his uncle (Ray Winstone), a clock repairman at the Gare Montparnasse, and made a hobby collecting discarded toy parts to fix his father’s automatron, a contraption designed by retired filmmaker, Georges Melies"
