Crimson Peak

Guillermo del Toro turns his directorial vision away from laying the groundwork for a mega-franchise back towards a smaller story, this time a homage to Gothic romance. Based on premise alone, you could have counted me in. Thrown in that cast, creepy supernatural elements, and stellar production design, and I’m beyond sold. Crimson Peak is definitely one of my favorite films of2015.   Through... read more

Crimson Peak is so vibrantly colorful! I really enjoyed it. One of Guillermo del Toro's best films. I think Pacific Rim and Pan's Labyrinth are a little better.

Guillermo del Toro returns to his roots (see The Devil's Backbone) to tell a colorful, frightening, and bloody ghost story. But as was the case with The Devil's Backbone, the ghosts are merely a side note, a tool to solve a much darker mystery. And with that, the film gives us so much more than a simple ghost story. It's more of a gothic horror, an adult fairy tale of sorts. Tom Hiddleston and a b... read more

"REDEEMING FACTORS: Those performances, that sleek design. Guillermo's faithful pitch-perfect ode to '20s to '40s style horror. --I REALLY wanted to like this movie more. WHY IT'S HERE: It seems like Del Toro's box-office failure here, spent so much time and effort trying to LOOK great, it forgot to, along the way, BE great. With a narrative so tired and cliched, recycled from original, more unforeseeable ghost stories of the bygone era, Crimson Peak just has no surprises. I found myself able to"

"Visually really beautiful film. The story was too predictable thought, but still this was quite entertaining gothic film. "

Movies the giraffe watched in 2017: September (28 movies items)

"First viewing - Sept. 21st Ok, so you might have expected me to wait to watch Crimson Peak until next month, but based on what I've heard about it I figured it wouldn't fit in well with the other films I have planned plus some have suggested it's "not horror". As an aside, I hate it when any movie that's clearly horror gets deemed "not horror" simply because it's not scary to someone. Here's a film that's clearly horror in the Hammer tradition, very Gothic with a good dose of ghastly creatures,"
