celluloid wit

This is probably the best screwball comedy ever! The laughs are real, almost disguising its analyses of 1930s-style gender expectations, sex and marriage.

My favorite scene is when Cary Grant wears a feathery feminine bathrobe; this scene contains one of the first popular appearances of the word “gay” being used to mean something other than “extremely happy”; and it is truly... read more

A classic

Since this movie had a really solid reputation, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, eventually, it turned out to be one of those typical screwball comedies from the 30's but, to be honest, I have never been a huge fan of the genre. Indeed, even though the plot was supposed to be ridiculous and shouldn't be taken too seriously, I still had a hard time to care about what was going on. On t... read more

Screwball Comedy on Steroids

I make it no secret that screwball comedy is my favourite genre of film. I can never get tired of these films; to me, this is the most un-boring genre ever. Whenever I’m watching a great screwball comedy I’m on cloud 9 and when it’s over I’m always left wanting more. Sometimes I wish my life was a screwball comedy. Bringing Up Baby is the quintessential daffy dame/stuffy gentleman movie (... read more

“In his glorious Bringing Up Baby, Howard Hawks ratchets screwball comedy up to its tautest and springiest level. In clumsier hands, screwball all too often gallops into the frenetic, fraying the nerves; Hawks maintains a presto pace, but never lets the mixups and misunderstandings grow implausible he just glides serenely to something else. (And he makes it look easy, which it isn't.)” read more

" Notes: Eventually, it turned out to be one of those typical screwball comedies from the 30's but, to be honest, I have never been a huge fan of the genre. Indeed, even though the plot was supposed to be ridiculous and shouldn't be taken too seriously, I still had a hard time to care about what was going on. On top of that, during the first 10 minutes, I wasn't really convinced by Cary Grant playing a nerd. Fortunately, as soon as Katherine Hepburn finally showed up, the whole thing started to "

"Bringing Up Baby is one of the few screwball comedy's that actually works pretty well thanks for the charisma of the actors and Howard Hawks direction"

100 Greatest Golden Age Hollywood Films (100 movies items)

"Perhaps the screwiest of all screwball comedies, Howard Hawks' 'Bringing Up Baby' is a peach of a picture in which the notion of plot is thrown to the wind in favour of a series of escalating comic episodes peppered with pratfalls, witty dialogue, endearingly goofy performances and just a smattering of romance. Based on a short story by Hagar Wilde, 'Bringing Up Baby' follows the misadventures of a hapless paleontologist who, on the eve of his wedding, becomes inextricably entangled in a series "

"One of the best, funniest comedies ever made. Cary Grant is the mild-mannered dinosaur expert who gets drawn into the world of scatterbrain Katharine Hepburn, leading the pair looking after a leopard called Baby. Howard Hawks's film is a classic in screwball comedies with grant and Hepburn crackling together. The dialogue comes thick and fast, while the comedy is impeccably timed and played out. One of those films you can watch again and again and still laugh out loud."
