It's a prequel because there are flashback segments to the previous Don Vito's childhood and how he became Don but sequel as well because it follows straight after the first one after Don Vito died.

Prequel to The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring (2001), The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers (2002) and The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King (2003).

Prequel to Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977), Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Star Wars: Episode VI - Return Of The Jedi (1983).

Prequel to Indiana Jones And The Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1984).

I mean this is known to many people as a reboot in the series because of a new Bond actor but I would still call it a prequel because it is set back when Bond began his career as 007 which became Bond's first mission and just as he is earning his licence to kill.

It is not officially a direct prequel but Prometheus is set in an earlier time setting and is linked to Alien due to the background concepts, storyline and scenes. So, like Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes and Casino Royale, I would call Prometheus a prequel.
