A Crimson Cosmos - Lake Of Tears
31.12.
I just do not get the hype. This is supposed to be a classic of gothic doom with lots of psychedelic drugs involved, but I just don't hear any of it. Maybe Crimson Cosmos was way more revolutionary back in the day, but the time has passed it so badly it doesn't sound any special these days.

A Book About Itself - Karmanjakah

I am so fucking fed up with these stupid djent bands. They think they're so clever when they copy paste this one gimmicky trick over and over again with zero creativity. Every time they do it sounds exactly the same.

A Black Box - Peter Hammill_II
31.12.
I think Peter Hammill is a huge hidden gem for anyone interested in more punkish prog rock. Hammill was always more raw and intense than other musicians of his time, but once the whole prog went out of fashion he really started finding his voice. Do not be fooled by the simplicity: this is still highly smart, artistic and creative music, just rawer and darker than most what had come before.
And it's not about guitar riffs or blast beats like most cliche musicians tend to have it in our time, but the whole production sounds very dark, kind of hollow and depressing. Now that is very smart musicianship.

666 International - Dodheimsgard
30.12.
Maybe I'm just old, but these kinds of experimental black metal albums bore me to death. At worst there's no real substance, only noise and random screaming, synths and blast beats. It's always the same, like they think this shit still sounds new and interesting in the 2020's for crying out loud.

To put it bluntly: I didn't like this album. I can't explain in detail, but I just didn't enjoy this one. Usually I love Blut Aus Nord.

Portals - Tesseract

They say this was supposed to be a live album. I can't hear the audience anywhere and the production is pitch perfect studio work. Where's the live portion? This is more like a best of album.

200XAD - Mega Drive
29.12.
I did not expect this. Mega Drive were already a great Synth Wave band, but now they're moving away and evolving further away from the already tired genre. Electronic music this still is.

Boneless Christian - Coven 6669
29.12.
I guess this is one of those love it or hate it kind of albums. I like it. For some reason they started experimenting with more technical drumming and two vocalists, and I think those are the stronger parts of the album. The vocals #1 aren't growling or anything, more like shouting, like imagine your angry mid 40's male neighbour shouting at you but instead it's thrash metal lyrics. The vocals #2 are the one's from the debut, you know the one with the higher pitch and sounds like a crazy hobo screaming. The riffs are kinda mid and the production sounds pretty cheap. But I still like it. Coven was a great band.

Latino rap. I remember when I thought this was supposed to be metal and got sorely disappointed. These days I don't think it's that bad, but when it comes to rap, I think there's way more interesting and creative bands out there.

Hunky Dory - David Bowie
29.12.
New spin.
28.6.
Step up from the previous album, but not yet some of his best. Not all songs here are instant classics, but at least they are all very enjoyable and somewhat memorable, anything but stale and boring. Life on Mars is an all time classic.

At least a half of this double album is just noise and interludes. Then there are few classic songs in between. Comfortable Numb is one of the greatest songs ever.

Persona 5 Original Soundtrack - Toshiki Konishi, Kenichi Tsuchiya, Atsushi Kitajoh, Ryota Kozuka,
28.12.
I can see why this is so popular. Persona 5 is very, very modern mix of pretty much every genre except metal. It has that mainstream appeal I would think many gamers love. And it's all around good music.

...Di Terra - Banco del Mutuo Soccorso
28.12.
This is a very underrated album. Banco are one of the best Italian prog bands and Di Terra was released just after their peak popularity days, so it didn't probably get the best possible timing. I can definitely hear Miles Davis influence here.

Miles Smiles - Miles Davis
27.12.
It's good, but I feel like this album was more like a collection of filler material. Jazz records rarely sell that well, so artists tend to release more albums and record faster to cover the costs. That's just life.

I consider Jack Johnson sessions one of the greatest jazz records ever made. Just look at the lineup of musicians. Like Jesus Christ, how much more talent could you possibly pack on an album?

Jazz from Hell - Frank Zappa
26.12.
Zappa was genius. He was so genius in fact, that most musicians couldn't play his music like he wanted. That's why back in the 80's he started using a programmable computer to do the trick. The music doesn't sound organic at all, but the super complex compositions are amazing.

Never bothered to listen to this one even back in the day I already was banging their earlier albums. I thought they were supposed to go bad anyway after Rubycon and few others. Internet lied to me.

This shit is great. But a word of warning: if you listen to this, don't get the remastered version with bonus tracks. When I sat down to listen to this while I read a book, I thought this lasted at least for five hours or so. At the end I ended up skipping a bonus track to finally get somewhere.

All kinds of albums and EP's I've been listening this year and beyond, only whole things and not single songs.
NOTE! The one's I have not yet commented are in progress, think of it as a planned playlist for the ongoing summer and beyond. My plan is to go as far away from my comfort zone as possible and experience all kinds of music that I have missed over the years. The vast majority of these albums I'm listening for the first time in my life.
