A Crimson Cosmos - Lake Of Tears
31.12.

I just do not get the hype. This is supposed to be a classic of gothic doom with lots of psychedelic drugs involved, but I just don't hear any of it. Maybe Crimson Cosmos was way more revolutionary back in the day, but the time has passed it so badly it doesn't sound any special these days.

A Book About Itself - Karmanjakah
31.12.

I am so fucking fed up with these stupid djent bands. They think they're so clever when they copy paste this one gimmicky trick over and over again with zero creativity. Every time they do it sounds exactly the same.

A Black Box - Peter Hammill_II
31.12.

I think Peter Hammill is a huge hidden gem for anyone interested in more punkish prog rock. Hammill was always more raw and intense than other musicians of his time, but once the whole prog went out of fashion he really started finding his voice. Do not be fooled by the simplicity: this is still highly smart, artistic and creative music, just rawer and darker than most what had come before.

And it's not about guitar riffs or blast beats like most cliche musicians tend to have it in our time, but the whole production sounds very dark, kind of hollow and depressing. Now that is very smart musicianship.

9 Lives to Wonder - Legendary Pink Dots

Cool space rock.

8:30 - Weather Report
31.12.

As a rule of thumb: jazz bands are always better live.
Darth Brutus's rating:

I love Nino Rota. The man could create melodies like no other.

666 International - Dodheimsgard
30.12.

Maybe I'm just old, but these kinds of experimental black metal albums bore me to death. At worst there's no real substance, only noise and random screaming, synths and blast beats. It's always the same, like they think this shit still sounds new and interesting in the 2020's for crying out loud.

4 1/2 - Steven Wilson
30.12.

Steven Wilson can only create good music.

Let It Be - The Replacements
30.12.

Genuine punk rock with no bullshit.

A Show of Hands - Rush_II
30.12.

One of the finest collections of music ever created.
Darth Brutus's rating:

The Shape of Jazz to Come - Ornette Coleman
30.12.

This slaps. Though, it's still quite tame for free jazz.
Darth Brutus's rating:

2112 - Rush_II
29.12.

This was the first truly great Rush album back in the day.

Disharmonium - Nahab - Blut Aus Nord
29.12.

To put it bluntly: I didn't like this album. I can't explain in detail, but I just didn't enjoy this one. Usually I love Blut Aus Nord.
Darth Brutus's rating:

Portals - Tesseract
29.12.

They say this was supposed to be a live album. I can't hear the audience anywhere and the production is pitch perfect studio work. Where's the live portion? This is more like a best of album.
Darth Brutus's rating:
People who added this item 0 Average listal rating (0 ratings) 0 IMDB Rating 0
200XAD - Mega Drive
29.12.

I did not expect this. Mega Drive were already a great Synth Wave band, but now they're moving away and evolving further away from the already tired genre. Electronic music this still is.
Darth Brutus's rating:
People who added this item 7 Average listal rating (4 ratings) 8.5 IMDB Rating 0
In Requiem - Paradise Lost
29.12.

Paradise Lost is much better band than I remembered. It seems all of their albums are cool goth metal.

Groove Family Cyco - Infectious Grooves
29.12.

This is pretty dope funk metal.

Boneless Christian - Coven 6669
29.12.

I guess this is one of those love it or hate it kind of albums. I like it. For some reason they started experimenting with more technical drumming and two vocalists, and I think those are the stronger parts of the album. The vocals #1 aren't growling or anything, more like shouting, like imagine your angry mid 40's male neighbour shouting at you but instead it's thrash metal lyrics. The vocals #2 are the one's from the debut, you know the one with the higher pitch and sounds like a crazy hobo screaming. The riffs are kinda mid and the production sounds pretty cheap. But I still like it. Coven was a great band.

Black Sunday - Cypress Hill
29.12.

Latino rap. I remember when I thought this was supposed to be metal and got sorely disappointed. These days I don't think it's that bad, but when it comes to rap, I think there's way more interesting and creative bands out there.
Darth Brutus's rating:
People who added this item 3 Average listal rating (2 ratings) 8.5 IMDB Rating 0
Terror and Submission - Holy Terror
29.12.

One of my personal favourite thrash metal albums. These guys were some of the more talented back in the day. The follow-up is even better.
Darth Brutus's rating:
People who added this item 1 Average listal rating (1 ratings) 7 IMDB Rating 0
Touchstone - Chick Corea
29.12.

This is the kind of music Chick Corea handles the best, that is instrumental latino jazz with classical influences.

An old classic. I have listened to this about a million times over the years. I even own a vinyl.

Hunky Dory - David Bowie
29.12.

New spin.

28.6.

Step up from the previous album, but not yet some of his best. Not all songs here are instant classics, but at least they are all very enjoyable and somewhat memorable, anything but stale and boring. Life on Mars is an all time classic.
Darth Brutus's rating:
People who added this item 826 Average listal rating (888 ratings) 8.4 IMDB Rating 0
The Wall - Pink Floyd
28.12.

At least a half of this double album is just noise and interludes. Then there are few classic songs in between. Comfortable Numb is one of the greatest songs ever.
Darth Brutus's rating:
People who added this item 0 Average listal rating (0 ratings) 0 IMDB Rating 0
Persona 5 Original Soundtrack - Toshiki Konishi, Kenichi Tsuchiya, Atsushi Kitajoh, Ryota Kozuka,
28.12.

I can see why this is so popular. Persona 5 is very, very modern mix of pretty much every genre except metal. It has that mainstream appeal I would think many gamers love. And it's all around good music.
Darth Brutus's rating:

Gregorian Chant "Like The Sun In his Orb..." - Schola Gregoriana of Cambridge & Mary Berry
28.12.

Who doesn't love Gregorian music? This shit is wonderful!
Darth Brutus's rating:

...Di Terra - Banco del Mutuo Soccorso
28.12.

This is a very underrated album. Banco are one of the best Italian prog bands and Di Terra was released just after their peak popularity days, so it didn't probably get the best possible timing. I can definitely hear Miles Davis influence here.
Darth Brutus's rating:

28.12.

This is major banger. One of Mile's best live albums. They say this album was a huge influence for noise rockers and experimental funk artists. I can definitely see that.
Darth Brutus's rating:

27.12.

This is one of the essential Miles Davis albums. Absolute masterpiece.
Darth Brutus's rating:
People who added this item 15 Average listal rating (7 ratings) 7 IMDB Rating 0
Miles Smiles - Miles Davis
27.12.

It's good, but I feel like this album was more like a collection of filler material. Jazz records rarely sell that well, so artists tend to release more albums and record faster to cover the costs. That's just life.
Darth Brutus's rating:
People who added this item 85 Average listal rating (61 ratings) 8.8 IMDB Rating 0
Sketches of Spain - Miles Davis
27.12.

One of his big albums and a game changer. This is a must for anyone interested in modern jazz.

The Complete Jack Johnson Sessions - Miles Davis,John Mc Laughlin,Ron Carter,Billy Cobham,Chick Corea,Jack DeJohnette,Steve Grossman,Herb
27.12.

I consider Jack Johnson sessions one of the greatest jazz records ever made. Just look at the lineup of musicians. Like Jesus Christ, how much more talent could you possibly pack on an album?

Near masterpiece. This was around when Miles peaked.

Ire - Parkway Drive
26.12.

Nice metalcore, but doesn't really stand out. This sounds too much like Machine Head, lyrics and all.
Darth Brutus's rating:
People who added this item 29 Average listal rating (22 ratings) 8.3 IMDB Rating 0
Jailbreak - Thin Lizzy
26.12.

It's cool and very pioneering dual-guitar hard rock, but I don't get the hype.
Darth Brutus's rating:

Jazz - Queen
26.12.

This is one of the better Queen albums. Lacks S-tier songs, but still very much fun.
Darth Brutus's rating:
People who added this item 18 Average listal rating (8 ratings) 8.1 IMDB Rating 0
Jazz from Hell - Frank Zappa
26.12.

Zappa was genius. He was so genius in fact, that most musicians couldn't play his music like he wanted. That's why back in the 80's he started using a programmable computer to do the trick. The music doesn't sound organic at all, but the super complex compositions are amazing.

Kodama - Alcest

This is one of my favourite Alcest albums.
Darth Brutus's rating:

Kontinuum - Klaus Schulze
25.12.

This was Klaus's back to the roots album. I remember listening to this for the first time while playing Mass Effect 2 back in the day. That's how long it's been.

Very predictable but ok.

Technique - New Order
25.12.

Well, I already listened to this before, but it's so good it deserves more spins. This is some great electronic music.

Tape Head - King's X

This sounds like King's X alright.
Darth Brutus's rating:

King's X - King's X
25.12.

Yes, this is more heavier King's X. I don't know what it is, but King's X don't sound like many other prog bands out there.
Darth Brutus's rating:
People who added this item 4 Average listal rating (2 ratings) 8 IMDB Rating 0
Tangram - Tangerine Dream
25.12.

Never bothered to listen to this one even back in the day I already was banging their earlier albums. I thought they were supposed to go bad anyway after Rubycon and few others. Internet lied to me.

25.12.

I feel lazy for picking up one of my favourite albums of all time, but this is just so good.
Darth Brutus's rating:
24.12.

This shit is great. But a word of warning: if you listen to this, don't get the remastered version with bonus tracks. When I sat down to listen to this while I read a book, I thought this lasted at least for five hours or so. At the end I ended up skipping a bonus track to finally get somewhere.

All kinds of albums and EP's I've been listening this year and beyond, only whole things and not single songs.

NOTE! The one's I have not yet commented are in progress, think of it as a planned playlist for the ongoing summer and beyond. My plan is to go as far away from my comfort zone as possible and experience all kinds of music that I have missed over the years. The vast majority of these albums I'm listening for the first time in my life.
