I've loved every film Benson & Moorhead have made so far, so naturally the moment this film was announced it shot to the top of my most anticipated list for 2022. Now that the Coens have parted ways (temporarily?), this is my favorite directing duo & I'll be there opening weekend to see what they've come up with this time around.
the giraffe's rating:

Swiss Army Man earned a spot among my favorite films ever & is just pure perfection in my book. And now the Daniels return with Michelle Yeoh? That's all I need to hear.
the giraffe's rating:

New Park Chan-Wook will always be among my most anticipated. Been too long since The Handmaiden.
I don't think I need to explain why a new Jordan Peele film would be near the top of my list. The only question is will I watch this one twice in theatres too?
the giraffe's rating:

New stop-motion from Henry Selick? And he's collaborating with Key & Peele as well as Clay McLeod Chapman? I'll be there opening day.
Hereditary was good, Midsommar was Great, so of course I'm excited for the new film from Ari Aster.
Of course I'm seeing the sequel to the best Spider-man film ever made. And I'll be there for its sequel too whenever we get it.
I've learned my lesson about not seeing Tom Cruise movies on the big screen, & as great as the last 2 MI films were I'd never miss one going forward.
Taika pulled off something I never thought possible after the first 2 Thor films: he made me care about the character again. Not only that, but he also delivered the only solo Thor film I'd happily sit through more than once. Here's hoping he'll give me a second one I'll want to come back to. In Taika we trust.

Those who've had the good fortune to catch this one in 2021 have given nothing but positive feedback & I've been reassured that moving its release date to summer is a good thing. All of which makes me more excited to finally see it.
the giraffe's rating:

Of course I'm excited for a new Raimi superhero movie. It'll be interesting to see how he does in the Marvel system, & how much he'll be allowed to make this film his own. I'm definitely interested in the story idea & after seeing what's essentially a trailer for it tacked onto the credits of No Way Home, it looks like it'll be pretty good.
the giraffe's rating:

Robert Eggers is making original art with darkness & humor & I'm here for it.
the giraffe's rating:

BigBug (2022)
Any film from Jeunet would be on my radar. His track record may not be perfect, but he's had more hits than misses. I've got mixed feelings about it going straight to Netflix, but as it's looking less & less favorable for original films to succeed theatrically perhaps streaming will be this one's best bet.
the giraffe's rating:

Halloween Kills was a step down from its predecessor, but not so bad as to kill my interest in how it will be wrapped up. I'll definitely watch this one, but my expectations will be lower this time around.
As much as I love Black Panther, losing Chadwick Boseman still stings. I'm sure Coogler will do his best by him & deliver something worthwhile, but it'll be tough to not think about what could've been.
This one seems promising, and like it's something different or at least fresh. And just look at that cast! Sam Rockwell, Awkwafina, Richard Ayoade, & Craig Robinson? Hell yes.
the giraffe's rating:

Ok so technically this is a special & not a movie, but still. I'm not missing anything with the Guardians, especially if Gunn is involved.
New Soderbergh is always worth checking out in my book, & even when I'm underwhelmed by one of his films there are always aspects I appreciate.
the giraffe's rating:

I've enjoyed about as many of Yorgos's films as I've disliked, but he's such an interesting filmmaker that I can't ignore a new film from him.
I don't know that we need yet another incarnation of Batman, but between Matt Reeves & the cast assembled I'm willing to give it a fair shake.
the giraffe's rating:

Not a sports fan, which is why this ranks lower on the list, but as I said above... In Taika we trust.
As a long-time fan of Cronenberg, I'll give this a look. I haven't enjoyed his last few films much, however, but I remain hopeful he'll deliver something really good again.
the giraffe's rating:

Unsure whether we'll get another Del Toro film so soon after Nightmare Alley, but whenever this one drops I'll be there.
I dig some of Sarah Polley's films & the cast looks promising for this film, so I'll most likely give it a look.
I loved Antiviral, but didn't like Possessor as much as others did (though it had some aspects I really dug). I'll definitely give this a chance, & hopefully I'll appreciate it.
I'm not at all familiar with Black Adam, but with Dwayne Johnson playing him I know I'll go see this. He's one of my daughter's favorite actors & she loves superheroes, so there's no way I could sit this one out even if I wanted to. DC has generally delivered better films lately, so here's hoping this continues the trend.
These are the films I'm most excited for for 2022 as the year begins. Some may wind up delayed until 2023 of course, and I'm sure I'll find out about others that won't be included in this list at the time of its posting because I rarely think to update a list once I've sent it out into the world.
Still trailer free for the following reasons: 1. They cause the list to load slowly, and sometimes they stop working or disappear entirely. 2. I don't want to feel obligated to return to this list to add more trailers as they're released. 3. I'm finding that more and more I'd rather go into a movie without seeing a trailer at all so my expectations are not misplaced.
