Adventure Island - Game Boy
No.267 / Added: 04.27.13 / Status: Not Played
While the name would seem to indicate this is a port of the first NES game for the GameBoy, Adventure Island is actually a port of Adventure Island II, so much like the infamous renumbering of the Final Fantasy games you need to do some research to know what you're getting with these games. Given that this is based off of Adventure Island II I have little doubt it is as tough as that game, which means Adventure Island II: Aliens in Paradise is probably the Adventure Island game you want if you want to take Adventure Island on the go.
No.361 / Added: 10.26.13 / Status: Played
Considering how difficult I found previous Adventure Island games to be despite their simple design, Adventure Island II: Aliens in Paradise (which is a port of Adventure Island III on the NES) features a password and continue system that really eases the pain that is often encountered with these early side scrollers. The game still isn't very robust but it is player friendly and I'd recommend it to those who want younger gamers to see and experience what games were like during the 8-bit era without all the kicks to the groin.

Adventure Island - Famicom and NES
No.414 / Added: 12.19.13 / Status: Not Played
I've only played a little of this one but what I did manage to play carried on the legacy (of difficulty) that the second game instilled in me years prior. Unfortunately, the game doesn't benefit from this in the slightest unlike a game like Ninja Gaiden. It wouldn't be until later Adventure Island titles that Hudson Soft would present the player with a much needed password system.

Adventure Island II - Famicom and NES
No.415 / Added: 12.19.13 / Status: Played
The first Adventure Island game that I ever played and to this day I can't even get off the first freakin' island. As sad as that is Adventure Island II still made a rather significant impact on me in the early going although it can't hold up to a Ninja Gaiden or Mega Man title. Still, I would definitely like to pick up the third game, especially if it is anything like its port on the GameBoy.

No.436 / Added: 12.28.13 / Status: Not Played
Originally released as a flash-based game on the internet, I have to admit I was interested in Alien Hominid the first time I saw it... but it was a long time from my first taste to obtaining the actual the game. Taking major cues from side-scrollers like Contra and Earthworm Jim, Alien Hominid takes influence from some well-revered sources and it ultimately serves the game quite well.

Angry Birds Trilogy - Nintendo 3DS
No.305 / Added: 06.25.13 / Status: Not Played
As a gamer who hates labels and gamers who overuse labels, I have to admit I kind of get annoyed by "hardcore" gamers who seemed so threatened by games like Angry Birds. They just seem so frightened that "casual" games are going to erode what they've come to know and love when such a situation is far from becoming reality. It is true that the landscape of gaming is changing (and yes, I DO hate some of the trends that taint the hobby these days) but there is a lot of room for *both* kinds of games to succeed. But seriously, can we stop with the all the insipid labels that just serve to split gamers into opposing groups? There are much bigger battles to be waged....

No.284 / Added: 05.27.13 / Status: Not Played
Truth be told the only reason I have a copy of Animal Crossing is because it was a freebie from a friend. I had fiddled around with the idea of buying a copy before that point but I was kind of swayed away from doing so by so many people telling me the game is a tremendous time sink. I kind of like my games to have more of a definite end Animal Crossing games seem to be on the opposite end of that spectrum. Needless to say I'll have to play though this entry before I even think about buying another.

Arkanoid DS - Nintendo DS
No.461 / Added: 02.10.14 / Status: Not Played
Needless to say I was rather surprised that there was a rather recent Arkanoid title for the Nintendo DS. What I wasn't surprised by was the fact that the cover pretty much states that Taito, like so many other companies, was gobbled up by the gluttonous Square Enix at some point which probably explains why you don't see Taito's properties as much anymore. Anyway, while I've always wanted to give one of the Arkanoid games a shot I read that this one is a bit different from previous games... so I don't know if that will be a bad or good thing when I get around to playing it.

No.438 / Added: 01.02.14 / Status: Not Played
I only have the faintest memories of playing Baku Baku in the late 1990's (and ironically it was on a PC and not a Sega Saturn) but the game was interesting enough for the game's title to stick in the back of my mind until more recent times. However, compared to others I usually tend to remember things that are far from important... so I doubt many people remember Baku Baku - or "Chomp Chomp" - which is bit disappointing even though it's just a simple alteration of a classic staple like Tetris.

Baten Kaitos

Another case where I was kind of lured into buying a game because of the wallet friendly price, Baten Kaitos is one of those games that will probably sit around and remain in its case until I find it a better home. In the general sense I am interested in the game because I want to know firsthand why my friends were annoyed with this game back when it came out... but by the same token it really takes a lot - more than usual - to get a role-playing game into one of my consoles. I've heard that the Eternal Wing and the Lost Ocean is a pretty long game and if I played it I wonder if I would have the patience to see it through to the end.

Battle Arena Toshinden - PlayStation
No.094 / Added: 10.16.10 / Status: Played
As important of a title as it was for the PlayStation’s launch it didn't take long for Toshinden's star to die out as superior competition from Capcom and Namco took its toll. Inevitable as this was I still have a soft spot for the original Toshinden's characters and music. Additionally, the game looks even better once it’s compared side by side with its two immediate sequels which were rather lazy works.

When you really think about it the fact that the 8-bit GameBoy was still ticking at the time of the PlayStation's debut is pretty impressive in and of itself... yet given my feelings (e.g. pitty) towards a franchise that was quickly buried by superior products it's probably no surprise that I picked this up, especially considering it uses the same engine as King of Fighters used on the GameBoy.

Given that the Sega Saturn is generally revered more for its two-dimensional prowess than its 3D capabilities it should surprise no one that Battle Arena Toshinden URA is rather inferior to Toshinden 2 on the PS1, the game it is based off. However, URA is ironically hurt (in my opinion) by its subtitle as "Ultimate Revenge Attack" has to be one of the lamest strings of words you can possibly sting together in the English language.

Blaster Master is an odd curiosity. The title of the game alone is pretty synonymous with the original Nintendo but beyond that you never hear anything about Blaster Master. The game did spawn a sequel in the PS1 days (Blaster Master: Blasting Again) but considering I haven't heard a thing about it I'm taking it that the transition to the third dimension didn't go so well. Still, beyond the synergy the original game has with the NES I don't know much other than some of the bosses can be nearly insurmountable without certain upgrades.

Out of all of the franchises tied to major developers and publishers I have to admit when it comes to my case many of Konami's properties are simply devoured by the mere presence of Castlevania. Of course, Silent Hill and Metal Gear Solid probably distract many gamers out there as well but with only one property really drawing my attention you'd think some of these smaller titles like Bomberman would peek through the cracks more often... but then once you factor in all the storied franchises beyond Konami's it unfortunately makes since.

While pitched as the spiritual successor to The 4 Heroes of Light (despite not being developed by Matrix software) Bravely Default's appeal can be easily summed up with its apparent focus on recreating the old-school role-playing experiences of yesteryear. With so many current console games trying to separate themselves from genre's humble beginnings it's not hard to see why so many people were really looking forward to this one.

Like a few other games on this list, my experience with Bravo Air Race stems from an old demo disc I got with my original PlayStation back in 1997. I know that's not quite a ringing endorsement but I did manage to remember the game existed throughout all those years and that just may be saying something.

No.000 / Added: 02.26.08 / Status: Not Available
The original, one disc soundtrack release for Yuko Takehara's soundtrack for Breath of Fire II on the SNES, I really have conflicted feelings about this score. On one hand a lot of Takehara's work is overlooked by video game music enthusiasts yet at the same time I have to admit that Breath of Fire II's music isn't all it could have been. While the music does carry on the rich, regal flavor the franchise was known for (before that calling card was scraped in BOFIII) Yuko's compositions are really reliant on context and nostaglia, meaning it can't really put up much of a defense again more stout and pivotal role-playing game scores. The music is an important part of why the game appealed to me but in more recent times I'm more than aware of it's shortcomings.

Breath of Fire III - PlayStation
No.036 / Added: 07.11.09 / Status: Played
Like the games before it, Breath of Fire III may be a little too comfortable with presenting the J-RPG essentials we've come to know and love. There are only a couple of areas where the game takes any kind of calculated risk but recreating that old-school magic of yesteryear was what Capcom was aiming for. Perhaps this is why the game has aged so well over the years, almost like a fine wine.

The original Breath of Fire is pretty famous in that it was released abroad by Squaresoft rather than by Capcom themselves. It’s not too often you see something like that but does the experience live up to its predecessors? Yes and no. Breath of Fire is a case where the underlying game would have been much more impressive had I played through it earlier, before I formed affection towards Breath of Fire II and III.

While it lacks the sheen that accompanies genre topping titles like Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger, I wouldn't trade my time with Breath of Fire II – and its story line's curious take on religion - for anything. Better yet is the fact the Game Boy Advance version adds some much needed improvements that makes the original SNES rendition pretty much obsolete. Now only if it had gotten a new translation.

Breath of Fire Original Soundtrack Special Box... - Yasuaki Fujita, Mari Yamaguchi, Minae Fujii, Tatsuya Nishimura, Yoko Shimomura, Yuko Takehara, Akari
No.000 / Added: 02.26.10 / Status: Not Available
The Breath of Fire Original Soundtrack Special Box is a peculiar animal. Unlike other box sets by Capcom, this box is simultaneously attractive and unattractive to the point were the positives and negatives pretty much cancel each other out, leaving one feel a little indifferent towards its contents. A big part of this probably has to do with the fact that the music of Breath of Fire has a rather checkered history when it comes to overall style which is the exact opposite of how Mega Man music is/was handled. Compounding such a situation is how the price of this box has exploded on the secondhand market now that it has gone out of print. Originally available for around one-hundred and fifty dollars some rather ludicrous sellers are trying to get half a grand out of it these days.

Breath of Fire IV - PlayStation
No.069 / Added: 06.01.10 / Status: Played
Like the games before it, Breath of Fire IV leaves many of the usual role-playing calling cards alone and again focuses on the areas unique to the series. However, as simple as such a plan is at its core, there’s an odd sense of dullness that presides over the entire experience that ultimately transforms what is a well-crafted title into a dry, touch-and-go affair that never really pops off the screen.
No.000 / Added: 01.03.11 / Status: Not Available
Prima's work on Breath of Fire III is pretty infamous thanks to a very large and glaring error that lead tons of players to believe a fixed boss fight was winnable when, in fact, it wasn't. The ability to "win" was actually referring to the second fight with Balio and Sunder but this didn't stop people from trying to prove the book correct. Beyond this small footnote in BOFIII history this guide is largely forgettable (I seriously don't remember using it when playing the game) and the only useful information is the list of learn-able enemy skills in the back.

While I haven’t exactly played through Breath of Fire on the Game Boy Advance yet I have played through the original on the Super Nintendo. Unfortunately, as solid as the game ends up being it’s truly a victim of circumstance as the experience would have meant a lot more to me if I had played it before sequels like Breath of Fire II and Breath of Fire III. At the very least it's nice to see that the series has improved.

I have to admit I’m still a little annoyed at SCEA for not allowing Capcom to release Breath of Fire III on the PSP in North America when Square Enix gets away with releasing the Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II remakes for the third time - further cementing the PSP as port/remake city. As a game Breath of Fire III definitely deserved another go around – but at the very least we can take solace in the fact the PSP is region free.

I'm sure everyone that's reading wants to know if I like this one or not. Unfortunately, I don't really have an opinion as I haven't played it yet. From an overall, not hands-on standpoint though I think you kind of have to dislike Dragon Quarter at least a little. Not to act like the series was tearing up the sales charts (or that the series take on the typical J-RPG was insanely fresh) before its release but I believe Dragon Quarter's lack of success played a hand in Capcom shelving the franchise which is a bit of a bummer anyway you slice it.

The Dracula X Chronicles is a bizarre package. First you have Rondo of Blood, a game that doesn’t benefit from being remade in the slightest (stick with the original) and then you have Symphony of the Night where the re-recorded voice acting does nothing to improve on an already great experience. Further compounding a conflicted collection is the fact that it’s more fun to play as Maria than Richter.

I have a somewhat strained relationship with old-school Castlevania on the NES; it isn't until Super Castlevania IV on the SNES that the series really gains any traction with me and it’s not hard to see why this is so. IV is well crafted and extremely refined that it and Castlevania: Bloodlines on the Genesis do their 16-bit systems proud. The game also sports a grand progressive-based musical score.

Harsh as it may seem old-school Castlevania would mean a whole lot more to me if Ninja Gaiden and Mega Man didn't exist or were introduced during a later console generation. Still, the battery back-up that saves your progress on this rendition is a big help in completing such an unforgiving classic. Too bad they didn't bring over other classic Nintendo games like Mega Man.

Castlevania Chronicles is a real oddity. While I don’t have a problem with old-school Castlevania (even though Ninja Gaiden kind of trumps the older titles until you get to Super Castlevania IV) I can’t imagine a product such as this being the answer to those who were hungry for more after completing Symphony of the Night. Chronicles has noble goals but they’re somewhat misguided.

A complete list of all the games and game related items (strategy guides, soundtracks, etc.) I currently own and a little bit on how I feel about each of them.

For many of these games it's the second time I've owned them... a good portion of my collection (save for a couple of Super Nintendo titles) were swiped by some bad roommates back in 2003. I've almost re-obtained most of what I had before that point and then some.

I originally had the items listed in order of acquisition (oldest to newest) but after thinking about it - and learning how to make sections on a list - I decided to reformat the list and group games/items by series alphabetically. I think this makes the list a lot easier to read and personally I've found it makes updating it easier as well.

Items with ratings are games I have played recently and/or have written a review for.

Games marked Played are games I have either completed at least once in the past or played a significant portion of. These games generally have the more in-depth summaries posted below them.

Games marked Not Played are a bit trickier. Most of these I just haven't played... but there are some I have played yet because it has been so long I've experienced them I can't in good consciousness mark them as such. These games generally have looser and less in depth summaries below them that is less about the game and more about what I currently know or how I came to know about the game.

There are a few games that don't make an appearance in the list since they are generally duplicates of items already listed. This can be due to a game (cart) only having one save slot or because the multiple copies of the game can be linked to achieve an added bonus or effect. I don't believe Listal allows you to use the same item twice, even it they are used in different sections of a list.
