Most of the modern Korean thrillers and arthouse dramas AND the grey-blue filter every modern thriller and action film uses

Have you seen a typical Korean thriller? And let me clear this out, I'm not talking about films like Memories of Murder here - that film is fantastic. I mean films like H or Acacia or Phone or Bad Guy.

Well, let me spoil them all for you: There's a murder mystery where someone has been killed brutally - sometimes the mystery has political undertones. The hero gets too mixed-up in the plot for his own sake and has personal reasons for uncovering it. At the end it's revealed that the hero or someone who is very dear to him is the killer, because a.) s/he was hypnotized, b.) s/he hit her or his head and just forgot that s/he was a killer in the first place, c.) because ghosts or aliens, that's fucking why. Every one of these retarded flicks is like this. Every one of them.

OR there's a character who just can't express his feelings without violence. Everything he goes through (and it's almost always a man, not a woman) filters through violence.

"I hate you!" *punch in the face*
"I love you!" *punch in the face*
"I have no opinion of you!" *punch in the face*
"I like these noodles!" *punch in the face*

All these characters look all the time like they have just stepped on the biggest dogshit of their lives while eating a lemon. Especially Kim Ki-Duk specializes in these kind of characters. It may feel fresh for the first time but after the umpteenth time I've witnessed this same trope it usually makes me giggle uncontrollably.

These are all shot in grey-blue tones, the cameraman is apparently required to be drunk all the time so the camera swings around uncontrollably and, aesthetically, when trying to look rough and realistic (my world isn't grey-blue, but hey, maybe it's different in other countries with all the air pollution and so on!), the films just look like someone doesn't know how to handle a camera. So they mimic the modern Hollywood cinematography quite well!

The first thing I was taught in school when using a camera was that if the color material is too blue because of the lighting or camera adjustments, it's much more difficult to adjust its colors later, in the editing room. It's preferable if the shot is too red than too blue - red is also more natural looking than blue.

So, please, understand me when I say this: almost every film which is just BATHING in tedious blue and grey looks to me like the cameraman hasn't done his job well or is a complete idiot. There are exceptions but there aren't many.

Paul Verhoven is the master of fucked up deaths. More than one of his masterpieces of violence make it on this list.

Richter:

I feel sorry for Richter. He had a verbally abusive boss, he lost his girlfriend, and- well this happened.

Benny:

Benny was a mutant. He seemed to be on the side of the mutant resistance, helping Quaid and Melina... Unfortunately, it was all an act and he was really working for Cohaagen. Benny tried as he might to kill Quaid, but it just wasn't his day.

Cohageen:

Cohaagen specialized in being the evil overlord of Mars. I'm sure that wasn't his official title, but that's really what he was. He bribed, manipulated and murdered his way to the top. He though he was well on his way to controlling an entire planet...

Unfortunately, he found himself outside without a space suit.
