An average movie

The first time I watched this movie (I'm pretty sure it was in the movie theater when it was released), I thought it was really terrible, in fact, one of the worst movies I had seen. Eventually, I watched it again recently and I have to admit that it was actually watchable after all. Of course, the story was preposterous but the special effects were actually pretty good. On top of that, you had a ... read more

The first half of this movie is pretty good, the set is really beautiful. I liked the unusual approach to the haunted house trope - the fear study. But the second half was ridiculous. Terrible dialog, really awful typecast characters (e.g. CZJ is the slut who wants to sleep with everyone...although she doesn't sleep with anyone at all). After the reveal of the plot twist I couldn't take it anymore... read more

I watched some of the clips from it but it looks like the ghosts of dead children are in the face carvings, sheets and curtains. What the heck did I just watch? I don't care for this movie and I don't know why... O_O

This horror tale focuses on visitors to the secluded mansion of Hill House who have been called to the isolated location by Dr. David Marrow (Liam Neeson) as part of a study on insomnia. However, Marrow is really investigating fear, and he plans to scare the subjects, including the introverted Nell (Lili Taylor) and the seductive Theo (Catherine Zeta-Jones). Unfortunately for Marrow and everyone staying at Hill House, the manor is actually haunted by an evil spirit out to torment its guests.

" Despite best intentions, even though The Haunting was a hit, critics blew raspberries at it, and the movie was torn to pieces by people watched it. Going as far as saying that the classic 1963 film, based on the Shirley Jackson novel, “The House on Haunted Hill” was a million times better and scarier. And also felt that the special effects, dated the film to no end, and it wasn’t even remotely terrifying. One of the very first films from DreamWorks, they had better luck later with Glad"

Better than its reputation implies

“The much-maligned remake of the classic 1963 film of the same name, 1999's The Haunting is a better flick than its reputation implies, thanks largely to a charismatic cast and exceptional set design. Scripted by David Self (Road to Perdition), the feature is based on Shirley Jackson's 1959 novel The Haunting of Hill House (which recently inspired a terrific Netflix series), and is actually more of a re-adaptation than a remake, since the production company could not obtain the remake rights for the 1963 film. Produced on an eye-watering $80 million budget, and with blockbuster extraordinaire Jan de Bont (Twister, Speed) at the helm, The Haunting is a visually striking horror movie, but it does not leave a lasting impression or get under your skin, which is a shame considering the talent an” read more
