A good movie

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this rather obscure feature but since I have always been a huge fan of of Daniel Day-Lewis, I obviously had to watch this flick at some point. Basically, it is not of one of his most famous movies, that’s for sure, but I still think it was interesting, even if I really had a hard time judging it. Indeed, to start with, the beginning was a ... read more

Once you can get past the constant screeching, wailing and rediculous overacting in the utterly attrocious first act, there's probably a decent adaption of Arthur Miller's play in here somewhere - which there should be considering Milller wrote the screenplay. I won't get into the play's modern relevance (there isn't really any social commentary), post-McCarthyism, but Winona Ryder isn't very conv... read more

Description: The Salem witch hunts are given a new and nasty perspective when a vengeful teenage girl uses superstition and repression to her advantage, creating a killing machine that becomes a force unto itself. Pulsating with seductive energy, this provocative drama is as visually arresting as it is intellectually engrossing. Arthur Miller based his classic 1953 play on the actual Salem witch trials of 1692, creating what has since become a durable fixture of school drama courses. It may look like a historical drama, but Miller also meant the work as a parable for the misery created by the McCarthy anti-Communist hearings of the 1950s. Th ... (more)

Pop Culture Phenomenon Films: 90’s (1884 movies items)

" When Arthur Miller's play The Crucible was first staged in 1953, it was widely acclaimed as a metaphor for the recklessness of Joseph McCarthy and his spurious crusade against communism. In its 1996 screen adaptation (scripted by Miller), the tone has been adjusted somewhat and plays as a warning against the dangers of political and religious extremism of all kinds. After a group of young women is accused of witchcraft in the Puritan community of Salem, Mass. in 1692, Abigail Williams, is "

"Day-Lewis surprisingly has so powerful scenes and overall really great performance in this film. I remembered seeing this as a kid when Maester Aemon gets crushed with stones. The stage play feel annoyed me throughout the run time though."

BradWesley123's Movie Journal- January 2017 (30 movies items)

" Netflix- 2hrs. 3min. First Viewing Too stilted and stagy to be a great film, but littered with too many strong scenes to be dismissed outright, The Crucible is a true mixed bag. The story has been adapted for the big screen, but much of the power of the original stage play has been lost; enough remains to keep things afloat, but not too much. The most surprising thing about it though is that the cast is a bit split; Allen and Scofield are exceptional, but Day-Lewis and Ryder feel miscast (thoug"

Negative Depictions of Real People (24 movies items)

"Abigail Williams, was not a conniving plotter, who wanted to kill John Proctor's wife so she could have him all to herself (the real Williams was 11, and the real John Proctor was 60, and there is zero evidence that they were having an affair) and was not malicious in her accusations, but was more likely doing it because she was scared she would be executed if she didn't. The real Thomas Danforth was also not the driving force behind the executions either, that was William Stoughton. Danforth a"
