Paprika, is the inside of my head this messed up?

"That's right, keep running. There are no boundaries to dreams. The spirit will be freed from the constraints of the body... and gain limitless freedom. Including me! I will also be free!"

When a machine that allows therapists to enter their patient's dreams is stolen, all hell breaks loose. Only a young female therapist can stop it: Paprika.

Fantastic movie with amazing music and incredible visuals. The story is interesting enough and the characters are pretty well flushed out... until the end. The end is a huge letdown.

I've been curious about this film ever since I overheard my peers dub Inception as a clone of it. While Inception's big lie (the PASIV device) might have been inspired by Paprika (which shares a similar, if not identical, lie), these films are hugely different in their content and meaning. To dismiss either as a duplicate of the other is unjustified and frankly, calls into question the viewer that... read more

"Paprika probablemente tenga los mejores valores de producción, pero en cuanto a lo demás es la más débil. La manera bizarra y cómica en que maneja el tema del mundo de los sueños hace que sea difícil tomársela en serio, anqué hace que la película sea entretenida al menos de manera superficial. Inception manejo el tema de los sueños mucho mejor. No será el mejor trabajo de Kon pero aun así no cabe duda que fue un gran director."

“The dream sequences are its saving grace, but this is by no means the masterpiece that I was expecting on the basis of its sterling reputation. It has glaring faults, namely undeveloped characterisation and a forceless narrative structure, both of which prevent the viewer from investing in beyond the superficial aspects. "Paprika" definitely succeeds from a visual viewpoint, but its construal elements fall flat. Perhaps the inclination to slickly actualise the complexity of dreamscapes without sacrificing logic was lost on its director, who opted to simplify the plot, thereby greatly reducing its potential to soar. Rather than applying surrealism to the sequence of events on screen and allowing the delineate components to be absorbed subliminally, the overt elucidation and predictable expo” read more

Slant's 100 Best Sci-Fi Movies of All Time (100 movies items)

"Satoshi Kon trains his thematic sights on collective societal madness in Paprika, an anime dream noir (based on a popular novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui) that plays as a 99-proof distillation of his brilliant TV series Paranoia Agent. Kon trusts brazenly in dream logic to support his inquiry into the increasingly blurred lines separating man and machine. His hyper-realistic drawing style lends itself well to the film’s edgeless wonderland, especially in a bravura pre-credits sequence where Paprika,"

My biggest disappointments in entertainment (128 tv items)

"Despite the praise its receives, Paprika is more infamous than famous, often referred as the worst movie Satoshi Kon has ever done and a lesser Inception (despite coming out first). I didn't watch the latter so I can't talk about that, but the first claim is 100% right to me. Despite the wonderful visuals, the soundtrack, the premise, the interesting themes, and the same anti-escapism messages this director always put in his works, the tone is uneven, the characters have no personal investment i"
