Only the Lonely

A bittersweet romantic comedy riff on Marty that’s also the final big screen appearance of a cinematic legend? Yep, I didn’t know that this was a thing either, but Only the Lonely has its awkward charms in enough of the right places to give it a mild recommendation. Much of this praise goes towards John Candy and Maureen O’Hara mining the material for all its worth and doing their best to ma... read more

" Danny, a cop, meets and falls in love with Theresa. They get engaged, despite sneaking around behind his mother's back, but when push comes to shove, he can't quite quit worrying about his mother long enough to be any kind of lover to Theresa. The film is notable, not being for one of the last films, to star John Candy, before his death, but also being one of the last theatrical films to be produced by John Hughes. As well as the Last theatrical film for Maureen O'Hara. Also, the only film "

Film Journal 2019 (225 movies items)

"John Candy and Ally Sheedy do the best character work and some of the best acting of their careers being an absolutely adorable couple. It's a shame they're surrounded by racists, stereotypes, assholes and Anthony Quinn (playing a Greek because he can never play according to his actual roots). It is a crying shame that this movie thinks prolonged racist joke monologues about various ethnicities are the height of comedy, never really has the balls to properly call its characters out on such bulls"

"John Candy teams up with the great Maureen O'Hara in her first role in 20 years. The script doesn't lend to any great moments and doesn't cater to the typical Candy character, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I thought he handled the role very nicely."

Only the Lonely

“A bittersweet romantic comedy riff on Marty that’s also the final big screen appearance of a cinematic legend? Yep, I didn’t know that this was a thing either, but Only the Lonely has its awkward charms in enough of the right places to give it a mild recommendation. Much of this praise goes towards John Candy and Maureen O’Hara mining the material for all its worth and doing their best to make the uneven tonal shifts work.   There’s only so much that multi-dimensional performances can do to distract you from slapstick that brushes up against more humane comedy, or loud moments of cartoonish behavior that takes some of the tenderness and sting from the more emotional ones. Dream sequences of Candy’s lonely beat cop fantasizing about his domineering, emotionally abusive mother e” read more
