The Wolf Man (1941)
This might not be the first werewolf movie made, but it is the one that embedded the monster into the public consciousness. Lon Chaney Jr is fantastic as Lawrence Talbot, the accursed Lycanthrope of the Story and injects a copious amount of sympathy. The Score by Hans J Salter and Frank Skinner is also worth noting and along with the beautiful set designs, makes this the single most atmospheric and haunting of the films from Universal's second wave of horror films. The Wolf Man himself is also one of the most Iconic monsters of all time, right along with Frankenstein's monster and Dracula.

Larry Talbot's rating:

This is a film that doesn't really need an introduction. John Landis's humorous retelling of the classic Wolf man story is a contemporary classic. The two leads are extremely likable, making the tragic events that befall them all the more horrifying. The humor only serves to make the horror elements even more effective. Oh yeah, the transformation scene is still incredible.

Larry Talbot's rating:

The Company of Wolves (1984)
This ones seems to be more obscure, at least I think it is, because I never see it on most people's lists of favorite werewolf movies. I always wondered why this film wasn't more celebrated. perhaps it's because Company of Wolves really isn't a horror movie, it's a dark fantasy, an adult take on Little red Riding hood. The set designs by Anton Furst is gorgeous. Also of note, the stories told are based on actually werewolf legend and aren't your typical Hollywood werewolf tales, which is a treat for folklore lovers.

The Curse of the Werewolf (1961)
My favorite of the Hammer films, this one takes a long time setting up an origin story for Leon's Lycanthropy. I think that's one of it's strong points though, separating itself from other werewolf movies and keeping it from being just a remake of the Wolfman. I always thought that Roy Ashton's werewolf makeup was really cool and probably his best work.

Larry Talbot's rating:

The Howling (1981)
Another classic 80's Werewolf movie. Joe Dante and John Sayles mix scares with blacker than black humor to wonderful results. The references to other werewolf movies are awesome and the werewolves themselves are probably the coolest looking werewolves ever created.

Larry Talbot's rating:

Ginger Snaps (2000) (2001)
This movie is a little silly at times, but it doesn't take itself too seriously and has an offbeat campiness that makes it work. The two leads have great chemistry and really sell it.

Legend of the Werewolf (1975)
Originally meant to be a follow up to Curse of the Werewolf, this was eventually released by Amicus studios. It's really hard to find, but well worth it. I find it criminally underrated. Besides, Peter Cushing is in it and he's always wonderful.

Larry Talbot's rating:

I always thought that this movie was a bit overrated. It's a decent action movie with some genuine scares and good gore, but the plot twist at the end is kind of a cop out and keeps it from being higher on the list. I'm also not a tremendous fan of the look of the werewolves either, not enough fur on the body.

Werewolf of London (1935)
I never understood why this one is considered the black sheep of the universal monster movies. It plays more like a Jekyll and Hyde movie than a werewolf movie, but I've always kind of liked that. In the film, the werewolf is portrayed as having the worst qualities of both man and wolf. It's also the movie to introduce werewolfism as a curse inflicted by the bite another werewolf, and while the Wolf Man perfected the formula, I still think this one is a good watch. I also think that The Werewolf of London actually looks creepier than Chaney's Wolf Man.

Larry Talbot's rating:

Silver Bullet (1985)
Sure, the effects are a little lame and the werewolf looks more like a bear, but this one is solid fun. I've always had a soft Spot for Everett McGill too, who's always great.
