The legacy of famed psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud informs the lives of people throughout the world even to this day, though it's a phenomenon to which most are unaware. The film is an exhaustive examination of his theories on human desire, and how they're applied to platforms such as advertising, consumerism and politics.

A Moment of Romance (Chinese: 天若有情) is a 1990 Hong Kong action romance film directed by Benny Chan and produced by Johnnie To. It starred the then hugely popular Andy Lau and newcomer Jackyln Wu as the two main protagonists.

The film is regarded as a major classic of Hong Kong cinema and recognised as one of Lau's signature works. As a result of its success, he had acquired the nickname of "Wah Dee", the name of the character he portrays in the film.

Synopsis: After a small-time hood takes an upper-class girl hostage during his escape from a jewelry heist, the two find themselves falling in love, in spite of the repercussions caused by their forbidden relationship.

Easy Rider (1969)

Easy Rider is a 1969 American road drama film written by Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Terry Southern, produced by Fonda, and directed by Hopper. Fonda and Hopper play two bikers who travel through the American Southwest and South, carrying the proceeds from a cocaine deal.

A landmark counterculture film, and a "touchstone for a generation" that "captured the national imagination," Easy Rider explores the societal landscape, issues, and tensions towards adolescents in the United States during the 1960s, such as the rise of the hippie movement, drug use, and communal lifestyle. Real drugs were used in scenes showing the use of marijuana and other substances.

The Wild One (1953), a landmark film of 50s rebellion by director Laslo Benedek, producer Stanley Kramer, and screenwriter John Paxton. It was the first feature film to examine outlaw motorcycle gang violence in America, and created a new kind of exploitative, low-budget, 'drive-in' movie about a new breed of American rebel, the biker outlaw.

The tale was inspired and loosely based on a real-life incident over the Fourth of July weekend in 1947 in Hollister, California, when about four thousand people, composed of motorcyclists and other visitors and enthusiasts, roared into the town over a two day period, and overwhelmed the facilities. However, they did not ransack the town, confront the locals, or cause civil unrest (except for some arrests for drunkenness, or urinating in public - often due to a lack of restrooms).

The poster of Marlon Brando perched on top of his Triumph Thunderbird motorcycle remains one of the most iconic images of rebellion in the 20th century. The sale of black leather jackets and motorcycles reached new heights after the film's release. Its knock on effect is such, that it also helped inspire the careers of James Dean and Elvis Presley, who both emulated the persona and appearance of Brando's character Johnny Strabler.

Reflecting forty years later in his autobiography, Songs My Mother Taught Me (1994), Brando said he had "had fun" making the film, but that "none of us involved in the picture ever imagined that it would instigate or encourage youthful rebellion". Furthermore, while he suspected that producer Stanley Kramer, writer John Paxton and director Lazlo Benedek may have initially intended to illustrate how easy it was for men to descend into an amoral pack mentality, in the end "they were really only interested in telling an entertaining story".

Journalists from all over America meet Marlon Brando in a New York hotel room to interview him about his new film, Morituri. Seeing this as an opportunity to let the legendary actor promote the film, they find Brando unwilling to talk about it, instead he is more interested in larking about and turning on the charm when being interviewed by Bobbi Johnson (a reporter for a Boston radio station), Miss USA of 1964.

They Live (1988)

They Live is a 1988 sci-fi action film directed by John Carpenter, and inspired by Ray Nelson's short story "Eight O'Clock in the Morning" and its comic book adaptation "Nada."

Nada ("Rowdy" Roddy Piper) is a drifting construction worker who arrives in Los Angeles and finds a pair of sunglasses which allow him to see that, not only are aliens living among us, they have hidden subliminal messages in all media urging humans to conform, consume, and reproduce.

John Carpenter has stated that this movie expresses his pessimistic views on economic inequality, consumerism, commercialism, and television being used as a propaganda tool encouraging people to spend their hard-earned but meagre income on goods and services they don't really need.

Yet, the very business Carpenter's a part of, operates in pretty much the same way and towards the primary end goal of profitmaking (and influence). Furthermore, he has clarified before that he was not entirely serious about his critique of society as depicted in the movie. After all, he has advocated capitalism a number of times and is not ashamed of the fortune he made whilst working within that system.

Carpenter has gone on the record to say that his political views were "inconsistent" and has said that he is against authority figures while also in favour of big government, admitting that these sets of views didn't "make any sense".

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (or simply Austin Powers) is a 1997 American spy comedy film directed by Jay Roach. It is the first installment in the Austin Powers series. It stars franchise co-producer and writer Mike Myers, playing the roles of Austin Powers and his arch enemy Dr. Evil. On a simplistic level, the film can be interpreted as a parody of the James Bond films and other popular culture from the 1960s.

Daniel Craig, who portrayed James Bond on screen from 2006 to 2021, credited the Austin Powers franchise with the relatively serious tone of later Bond films. In a 2014 interview, Craig said, "We had to destroy the myth because Mike Myers fucked us", making it "impossible" to do the gags of earlier Bond films which Austin Powers satirised.

According to Myers himself though, he created the Austin Powers character as a tribute to his father; more specifically, as a tribute to the comedy and culture of the '60s, which his father had introduced him to and which had influenced his own comedy.

Grizzly Man (2005)

Pieced together from Timothy Treadwell's actual video footage, Werner Herzog's remarkable documentary examines the calling that drove Treadwell to live among a tribe of wild grizzly bears on an Alaskan reserve. A devoted conservationist with a passion for adventure, Timothy believed he had bridged the gap between human and beast. When one of the bears he loved and protected tragically turns on him, the footage he shot serves as a window into our understanding of nature and its grim realities.

Treadwell may have had an unusual psychiatric disorder in which a person has the delusion that he or she has been transformed into a non-human animal. Treadwell seemed to go well beyond the typical ideology of animal protectors. He developed an identification with the bears that was so strong that he spoke in ways to suggest that he was one of them.

Somehow, he managed to ignore every piece of warning and advice (regarding safety protocols) that came his way, in service of this newfound lifestyle. In doing so, it came at the dear cost of not only his own life and his loved one's, but two of the bears he tried to protect.

Filmmaker Stanley Nelson traces the rise and catastrophic fall of the Peoples Temple movement and its charismatic founder Jim Jones, who convinced hundreds of his followers in Jonestown, Guyana to participate in a mass ‘suicide’ on November 18, 1978. More than 900 people died in the utopian community they had tried to create in the jungle.

The phrase “drinking the Kool-Aid” was popularised in the wake of the tragedy. It refers to a strong belief in and acceptance of a deadly, deranged, or foolish ideology or concept foisted upon by another. Jim Jones, however, used Flavor Aid and not Kool-Aid for his powdered drink mix as was mistakenly believed at first.

Death Wish (1974)

Synopsis: Open-minded architect Paul Kersey returns to New York City from vacationing with his wife, feeling on top of the world. At the office, his cynical coworker gives him a welcome-back with a warning on the rising crime rate, but Paul, a bleeding-heart liberal, thinks of crime as being caused by poverty. His coworker's ranting proves to be more than true when Paul's wife is killed and his daughter is raped in his own apartment. The police have no reliable leads and his overly sensitive son-in-law only exacerbates Paul's feeling of hopelessness. He is now facing the reality: the police can't be everywhere at once. Out of sympathy, his boss gives him an assignment in sunny Arizona where Paul gets a taste of Old West ideals. He returns to New York with a compromised view on muggers.

At the time of release, Death Wish was criticized for its apparent support of vigilantism and advocating unlimited punishment of criminals. The novel allegedly denounced vigilantism, whereas the film embraced the notion.

Michael Winner, the director, maintains that his films are merely a reflection of a violent society. He says: "There is too much violence in society and all film and TV does is encapsulate stories from society." But he denies censorship is the answer.

"This is the most over-sensitive country in the world (speaking of the UK during the 80s)" says the director, "We're so over-censored and yet the crime rate goes up."

But Winner is firmly behind efforts to halt increasing violence off-screen.

"I am the greatest pro-law and order chap in the world," he says. He set up his charity, the Police Memorial Trust, to "thank the police for what they do".

"My sympathy is totally with the little old lady who gets bashed over the head with an iron bar, not with the youngster who did it and gets sent to the South of France for six weeks to turn into a lovely human being".

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York is a 1992 American Christmas comedy film directed by Chris Columbus, and written and produced by John Hughes. The sequel to Home Alone (1990) and the second installment in the Home Alone franchise, the film stars Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, John Heard, Tim Curry, Brenda Fricker and Catherine O'Hara. The story follows Kevin McCallister as he is separated from his family on their holiday to Florida. He has another encounter with the Wet Bandits in New York City after their escape from prison.

Home Alone 2 was theatrically released in the United States by 20th Century Fox on November 20, 1992. It received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the performances while criticising its darker tone and violence. It was also slated for being mostly a carbon copy of the first film, featuring numerous plot points and gags that are lifted directly from its predecessor.

Nonetheless, over the years it has remained a Christmas staple, with some fans believing it to be superior to the original. John Nugent of Empire, in a 2022 article entitled 'Why Home Alone 2: Lost In New York Is Better Than Home Alone', argued that the film was "a film that recognises the greatness of what came before and wisely hews as close to that winning formula as possible." Also writing in 2022, Reid Goldberg of Collider noted: "A significant part of the film's appeal... is that it's unapologetic in taking everything they loved about the first film to a higher level."
