My Movie Journal-2014

Sort by: Showing 1-50 of 72
Decade: Rating: List Type:
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson
Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams
My rating: 9/10

"If you figure a way to live without serving a master, any master, then let the rest of us know, will you? For you'd be the first person in the history of the world."

The Master is brilliant, unique, mysterious and unbearably sad. Phoenix gives a laceratingly powerful performance. His face is incised and gaunt like that of a medieval saint, he mumbles and giggles almost unintelligibly; walking around with his fists in the small of his back, elbows akimbo. It's interesting and scary. But in the movie a little bit unreasonable, all about a crazy sociopath ideology. The Master is a supremely confident work from a unique film-maker, audacious and bizarre.
Director: Martin Scorsese
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey
My rating: 8/10

"I am not gonna die sober!"

Incredibly, incredibly, incredibly funny. DiCaprio's performance is the best, wildest thing he's ever put on screen. The slapstick elements are the most obvious proof of this. The movie is intense, versatile, funky and vibrant. This is the only film in which Leonardo DiCaprio make a fool out of himself. I love it.
Director: Marc Forster
Starring: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, Pierfrancesco Favino
My rating: 7/10

"Mother Nature is a serial killer."

Despite some conventional passages and soft ending, Brad Pitt pulled the movie. The film can tear through normal expectations. Overall, I liked it.
Director: Steve McQueen
Starring: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Lupita Nyong'o, Paul Dano, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sarah Paulson, Brad Pitt, Paul Giamatti
My rating:6/10

"You will not live to see another day!"

Not bad but boring for me.
Michael Fassbender the best in the film. He is very very good.
Director: David Cronenberg
Starring: Keira Knightley, Michael Fassbender, Viggo Mortensen
My rating:6/10

"Experiences like this, however painful, are necessary and inevitable; without them, how can we know life?"

Viggo Mortensen is impressive.
All actors are good at the film. The true story is extraordinary; the film is average.
Director: Edward Zwick
Starring: Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber, Jamie Bell
My rating:5/10

"If we should die trying to live, at least we live like human beings."

Zwick wants to tell timeless stories.
But it's not breathtaking. It's not really good.
Director: Tom Hooper
Starring: Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, Geoffrey Rush
My rating:8/10

"In this grave hour fuck fuck fuck perhaps the most fateful in our history bugger shit shit. "

Classic film with humor and poignancy.
Surprisingly funny and touching for me. And Colin Firth is surprisingly good.
Director: Paul Haggis
Starring: Matt Dillon, Jennifer Esposito, Don Cheadle, Thandie Newton, Terrence Howard, Sandra Bullock, Brendan Fraser
My rating:8/10

"Wait 'till you've been on the job a few more years. Look at me. "

The acting is dynamite, notably by Dillon and Newton in their shocking second encounter.
Despite its preachy moments, the film is amazing. Matt Dillon's performance is great.
Director: Valerie Faris&Jonathan Dayton
Starring: Paul Dano, Zoe Kazan
My rating: 7/10

"Same rules apply."

One of the best films of the year. James McAvoy frighteningly brilliant and awesome. Ironic atmosphere, powerful colors, McAvoy's fiercely sarcastic performance, grotesque angles and distortions... I love these. James McAvoy plays brutally! The Scottish actor is startling. McAvoy, on his best form since Atonement, performs what might be the most dangerous balancing act by a leading man this year, teetering crazily between repugnant and pathetic without ever passing through likeable, and yet somehow never loses you in the process.
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson
Starring: Adam Sandler, Emily Watson, Philip Seymour Hoffman
My rating: 8/10

I love Anderson's world. The locations, colours, mood and actors are incredible and pleasurable. Edward Norton and Jeff Goldblum has always adorable. And I really like Adrien Brody in the film.
