January to February 2020 Tomatometer Predictions

Tomatometer Guess: 39%. The second American remake of the Japanese horror film by the same name. Will the R-rating be enough to distinguish itself from the 2004 remake starring Sarah Michelle Gellar?

Actual Score: 16%. In case you forgot, "The Grudge" is hear to remind you about why January is a dumping ground for movies. It's unscary, predictable, tasteless, and extremely tedious. Not a great way to start off the new year, much less the new decade.

Tomatometer Guess: 52%. Based on the trailers, this movie is aiming to do for the ocean what "Alien" did for space.

Actual Score: 49%. "Underwater" doesn't break new ground, but it's enjoyable, competently made, and acted well enough to make it worth watching despite its derivative elements.

Tomatometer Guess: 20%. Will Robert Downey Jr's first post-Marvel role be a huge hit or a huge flop?

Actual Score: 19%. "Dolittle" is a dull, muddled, juvenile, and obnoxious mess that only the youngest and uncritical of audiences will find enjoyment in.

Tomatometer Guess: 36%. Will this Bay-less sequel to the Michael Bay's Bad Boys be able to retain the same dumb fun popcorn charm of its predecessors, or is it getting too old for this sh*t?

Actual Score: 77%. Higher score and better movie than I expected. "Bad Boys For Life" is exciting, thrilling, funny, and surprisingly emotional. Making it a welcome return for a long-dormant franchise. Definitely worth watching.

Tomatometer Guess: 70%. Based on early reviews, this crime thriller appears to be a welcome return to form for director Guy Ritchie.

Actual Score: 73%. Though somewhat derivative of director Guy Ritchie's earlier work, "The Gentlemen" is nonetheless an exciting and wildly fun time at the movies, benefitting greatly from its witty dialogue and sharp chemistry amongst its cast.

Tomatometer Guess: 18%.

Actual Score: 13%. "The Turning" squanders its potential with cheap scares and a bafflingly rushed ending.

Tomatometer Guess: 41%.

Actual Score: 33%. While it features a solid performance from Blake Lively and some entertaining moments, "The Rhythm Section" suffers from a bare bones script and lethargic pacing that saps it of any excitement or urgency.

Tomatometer Guess: 69%. This semi-sequel to "Suicide Squad" sees Margot Robbie returning as Harley Quinn to team up with the Birds of Prey against Black Mask (Ewan McGregor).

Actual Score: 82%. "Birds of Prey" is a unique, manic, thrilling, and violently entertaining comedy that does its title character Justice while also being a potential gateway for a new spinoff.

Tomatometer Guess: 20%. Whether or not anyone was asking for a dark gritty remake of Fantasy Island is irrelevant as we appear to be getting one nonetheless.

Actual Score: 10%. Tonally uneven, poorly written, and full of jarring twists, "Fantasy Island" is a woefully incompetent horror film that will leave you wishing you hadn't wasted your time watching it.

Tomatometer Guess: 62%. This American remake of the French comedy "Force Majeure" stars Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a couple forced to re-evaluate their lives and marriage when an avalanche traps them in a ski lodge.

Actual Score: 42%. The appropriately titled "Downhill" trades the original film's effective and subtle cringe humor for sporadic visual gags and lacks the wit and charm of the original.

Tomatometer Guess: 75%.

Actual Score: 76%.

NOTE: Because I couldn't find an image of the 2020 live-action Sonic movie, I'm using this.

Tomatometer Guess: 44%. After a radical redesign that put the VFX company under, we'll find out if the delays resulted in a better movie.

Actual Score: 63%. "Sonic The Hedgehog" doesn't reinvent the wheel and leans slightly more towards kids and fans than it does casual audiences, but it's still a harmless and surprisingly not awful adaptation of the games.

NOTE: This is meant to be the Chris Sanders adaptation starring Harrison Ford.

Actual Score: 65%.

Tomatometer Guess: 78%. After making an impressive debut with 2018's "Upgrade", Leigh Whannell sets his sights on this modern update on the classic Universal horror tale starring Elizabeth Moss.

Actual Score: 90%. Leigh Wannell's take on The Invisible Man msu just be the best adaptation yet. It's well-acted, suspenseful, and full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing till the very end. I highly recommend it!
