Amélie (2001)
Awaken your senses and you'll find that, even in the tiniest corners, life's little wonders are just waiting to be discovered.
DrStrangeblog's rating:

Memento (2000)
Unforgettable unique backward-timeline movie experience. Well, except to the main character that is.
Same epic hobbit story enhanced by the appearances of terrific key characters Gollum, Saruman, Theodin, Eowyn, Wormtongue, and Treebeard, and a little altercation occurring at Helm's Deep.
Fate's a bitch. On the other hand, a bitch would be preferable to a compressed-air-cannister-carrying Spaniard with a bad combover.
DrStrangeblog's rating:

Easy A (2010)
Meet the quick-witted & reourceful Olive Pendergast, my all-time favorite movie teenager. To borrow rival Marianne's means of expression, Easy A's rare combination of smarts and giggles is "Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome."
DrStrangeblog's rating:

Ghost World (2001) (2002)
A beacon of compassion for misfits of all distinctions. I've said it before and will say it again, I love this movie.
Pitch Black (2000)
Who would you trust to lead you to safety from a massive flock of flesh-munching space pterodactyls, the brutish convicted murderer, the junkie bounty hunter, or the flight officer who tried to eject the entire passenger cabin? Uh oh.
DrStrangeblog's rating:

I don't know how, but they found the otherdimensional nexus where comedy and peculiarity collide. Pinnacle of pants-pooping weirdfunny.
Bully (2001)
"The hitman needs a ride." Brutal, barefaced, and bare-assed true story is unflinching and un-turn-offable.
DrStrangeblog's rating:

The original 'found footage' film is still the most effective, stranding you out in those isolated Maryland woods along with three young filmmakers - and one angry witch.
DrStrangeblog's rating:

"Sooner or later, the day comes when you can't hide from the things that you've done anymore."
DrStrangeblog's rating:

Your soulmate won't show up and see you wearing a sign, so why not try lying and manipulation to get their attention? Crazier things have happened.
DrStrangeblog's rating:

Who Am I? (1998)
Jackie Chan's last truly great action epic, at 44 years he flies across the screen as spryly as anyone half his age.
The beginning of a remarkable journey, taken one hairy step at a time.
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Scariest zombies ever, and don't dare miss the opening 10 minutes!
DrStrangeblog's rating:

The Bourne Identity (2002)
Take your top-flight action/mystery/thriller movie and throw in a white-knuckle car chase, and this Bourne does them all better.
DrStrangeblog's rating:

Erin Brockovich (2000)
Erin had the balls, the brains, and the breasts to stand up for David Nobody against Goliath Corporation.
DrStrangeblog's rating:

"This is the Zodiac speaking."
Incredibly engrossing and 95% true recounting of America's most confounding serial killer.
Incredibly engrossing and 95% true recounting of America's most confounding serial killer.
DrStrangeblog's rating:

Includes the most intense 60 consecutive minutes of armrest-clenching fear I've ever experienced while watching a movie.
Fully absorbing cold case mystery with a brilliant conclusion that you'll never see coming.
DrStrangeblog's rating:

The Ring (2002)
A movie that really gets under your skin - no blood or gore, instead using disturbing images and foreboding atmosphere to gnaw away at the nerves, plus the creepiest kid and a fall-over-backwards 'boo' moment!
Love the slick European style reminiscent of La Femme Nikita or Run Lola Run, the steely resolve of Saoirse Ronan and perfect pulsating Chemical Brothers score make this a killer ice cold thriller.
DrStrangeblog's rating:

The Sixth Sense (1999)
I still remember the "OH MY GOD" realization I had when I saw this in the theater, one of my most treasured movie-watching moments.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)
The ultimate brain-overloading action movie/rock music/16-bit videogame/comic book pop-culture mashup.
DrStrangeblog's rating:

Marquise (1997)
Boisterous, bawdy, and beautiful - this Moliere acting troupe makes Shakespeare In Love look like community theater.
DrStrangeblog's rating:

Naomi Watts turns in one of the most shattering performances ever in the aftermath of terrible tragedy.
I love the breathless pace and sharing the same feeling of complete confusion that Rufus Sewell does as a wanted man on the run.
Haven't had this much pure sci-fi fun since the original Star Wars!
DrStrangeblog's rating:

The Nice Guys (2016)
A hilarious comedy/mystery of the type you just don't see anymore, so naturally it takes place in the '70s.
DrStrangeblog's rating:

A modern Treasure of the Sierra Madre that echoes one of my own philosophies about life: "It's never easy."
DrStrangeblog's rating:

The Bride vs. the Crazy 88's in a Tokyo nightclub delivers a bloodbath only rivaled by Braindead's lawnmower zombie massacre.
Men in Black (1997)
This offbeat "the aliens are everywhere!" romp is the kind of movie I wish I had made.
The Host (2006)
There's a giant seamonster on the loose! Better hope you don't have to count on this ragtag family to save you! What they have in determination, they lack in...everything else. Great Gamera-sized fun.
DrStrangeblog's rating:

According to Peter Jackson, when you conclude an adventure this epic, you can't have too many endings.
Stevie (2002)
Emotionally draining, highly personal doc from Steve James in reconnecting with his charge from the Big Brother program 12 years later, underlining the startling paths our lives can take.
American Psycho (2000)
The title could refer to either Patrick Bateman's persona or Christian Bale's brilliantly nutty performance. It's hip to be square!
School of Rock (2003)
Jack Black's reason for being fulfilled as a chord crunching phony substitute teacher, with a classroom full of some of the greatest movie kids ever collected.
DrStrangeblog's rating:

Toy Story 3 (2010)
The animation is incredible, but the real movie magic here is getting an audience to have such an emotional investment in pretend plastic characters that don't even exist outside a computer.
Priceless (2006)
Endearing romantic comedy between a gold digger and a waiter-turned-gigolo as only the French can do.
DrStrangeblog's rating:

Chicago (2002)
I hate musicals and Richard Gere, so what the hell happened here?? (That should be a lyric!)
"I will make you feel bad for being stupid enough to sympathize with this unfortunate family, it's just a MOVIE you fools!" sayeth sardonic Michael Haneke (paraphrasing his subtext).
Remember that time Godzilla chased us through the streets of Manhattan? Wait, that didn't really happen?? Sure felt like it.
DrStrangeblog's rating:

Gravity (2013)
The benchmark for weightlessness until they actually start shooting movies in space.
DrStrangeblog's rating:

Thanks to David Fincher here's double proof that the movie can be better than the book, AND a remake even better than the original.
DrStrangeblog's rating:

Capturing The Friedmans (2003)
Home movies, sibling solidarity, wild allegations of sexual abuse, and the power of suggestion all wage battle over the truth, forever disfiguring the face of a seemingly normal Jewish family.

This list became quite an interesting challenge, knowing that my favorite classic films were ineligible for this particular list forced me to focus on my 'newer' favorites. You might notice a proportionately smaller number of films are represented from the past 5 years, and there are a couple reasons for that. I almost never go to the theater so I haven't had a chance to see any of the most recent releases. Furthermore on the flipside of that, I've had the chance to watch the older movies several times over the years and they have had a longer opportunity to become like well-known friends. But that won't stop me from adding names whenever a new one grabs me!
