50 Most Hated Movies Ever Made

Sort by: Showing 1-50 of 51
Decade: Rating: List Type:
People who added this item 2852 Average listal rating (1937 ratings) 5.1 IMDB Rating 5.3
Daredevil (2003)
The Movie: Marvel banked on the growing popularity of comic-book movies to launch the cult property about a blind lawyer fighting crime with sonar-sense.

Why It Was Hated: 2003 was the year when Ben Affleck became the bloggers' whipping boy, so there was no escape - even if the better-received Director's Cut suggested that studio mishandling was largely to blame for the muddled tone and narrative.

Typical Online Review: "Daredevil sucked because it was extremely corny. None of the characters were done in a way that made you actually care about them. It was just a very amateur movie in almost every aspect. Bullseye is the worst. His opening scene in the bar .. and almost every scene with him is a big cringe. Cringe as in .. facepalm moment." statikcat, Blu-Ray.com forum

My take on the film: It may have not been a totally great film, and okay at best, but hey at least Colin Farrell, stole the film as Bullseye.

The sequel, Elektra? It was just, meh.

The Movie: Bryan Singer's ambitious attempt to go old-school on the Man of Steel, even down to ignoring the third and fourth Reeve films and making this a belated threequel.

Why It Was Hated: Plenty of promise dissipated amidst Singer's preference for Supes' romance with a miscast Kate Bosworth over the kind of emotionally resonant action he'd brought to the X-Men films.

Typical Online Review: "Thank god for this group and you people. FUCK SUPERMAN RETURNS. Fuck it up its stupid ass." Ryan Sweeney, 'Superman Returns was an awful, boring movie. You're a tool if you disagree' Facebook group.

My take on the film: It was ok, but fair more entertaining than Superman IV. There. I said it.

People who added this item 1504 Average listal rating (972 ratings) 5.8 IMDB Rating 6.2
The Movie: The debut production of Platinum Dunes, Michael Bay's attempt to remake classic horror, one movie at a time.

Why It Was Hated: The choice of music video maker Marcus Nispel as director set the house style for Platinum Dunes - glossy, bloody and nowhere near as unsettling or thought-provoking as Tobe Hooper's original.

Typical Online Review: "Confused yet? Bored, even? I sure was. For as many changes of scenery as TCMtR has, all of them look the same. I understand how that might be intentional--that's part of the horror, right? that there's no escape?--but how many near-identical shots of Jessica Biel running and hiding and shivering and sucking in her breath in terror are necessary to tell the story?" Cheapdate, IMDb

My take on the film: It was just okay, for me at least, the best part of the film, was R. Lee Emery

The Movie: McG swaps the candyfloss of Charlie's Angels for the grit of the post-apocalypse, as the Terminator saga continues into the future.

Why It Was Hated: Functional rather than frightful, it proved that hackwork is no substitute for innovation. Many felt that the miscast Christian Bale gave a better performance behind-the-scenes.

Typical Online Review: "Skynet's plan was beyond idiotic. So it created this hybrid terminator to infiltrate the humans, fine, that makes sense. But then why give it complete unfiltered access to all its files, why not program it to shut down or self terminate once it enters skynet. Instead, it gave the guy enough access into it's file that he could deactivate the whole facility. How idiotic is that?" Captain Hammer, IGN boards

My take on the film: It was a pretty okay film, the special effects were nothing to write home about, however.

The Movie: John Boorman's sequel to the head-spinning, crucifix-fucking phenomenon.

Why It Was Hated: Boorman blatantly wasn't interested in horror and tried to create an art-film about religious faith. The godfather of sequel outrages.

Typical Online Review: "This is a film that trashes a work of art. It's like someone deciding to do a Mona Lisa 2, but with a moustache. Everyone involved in this, apart from Linda Blair, should be ashamed for all eternity." Mark Kermode, The Guardian

My take on the film: The film, is scary for all the wrong reasons.

The Movie: Rob Zombie has a go at updating the John Carpenter slasher classic - now, with added backstory for Shatner lookalike Mike Myers.

Why It Was Hated: Grudging respect for the film's first half, which delved into Myers' asylum childhood, died the moment Zombie caught up with the original and delivered a scare-free rehash.

Typical Online Review: "Halloween circa 2007 is more a quick-fix marketing ploy, intended to hit a ready-made audience than an artistic cinematic endeavour. Employing the limited talents of Rob Zombie – the pin-up of MTV generation trash – to not only write but direct the new film, indicated the studio (read: the Weinsteins) weren’t interested in remaking quality just inventing box office profit." Daniel Stephens, Strange Conversation

My take on the film: Not bad, but not great either. But not the low point as far as Halloween films, go.

Part III and the other part II, however.
Agent Kermit D. Fonz's rating:
People who added this item 3817 Average listal rating (2584 ratings) 5.5 IMDB Rating 5.7
The Movie: Light is the new dark, as Marvel bucks the trend with a movie about superheroes who like being superheroes.

Why It Was Hated: Tim Story's family-friendly vision proved too frivolous for audiences who had just seen the future of the genre in Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins.

Typical Online Review: "One of the worst super-hero movies I've ever seen. Extremely cheesy, super kid friendly, and cringe-inducing dialogue with little to no action to redeem the lacking qualities." Albert K, Rotten Tomatoes

My take on the film: It had it moments, I guess.

Resident Evil (2002)
The Movie: Paul W. S. Anderson met future wife Milla Jovovich while unleashing his adaptation of the zombie-virus video game hit.

Why It Was Hated: Anderson's attempts at fanboy filmmaking, with slipshod characterisation and plotting in between over-enthusiastic action, has spawned four sequels without ever really impressing anyone.

Typical Online Review: "this is my number one and will forever be the number one worst movie. im a DIE HARD, and i mean DIE HARD resident evil fan, played all the games, read all the comics even own all the action figures and collectables. and when i heard this was coming out i was so hyped.......but i was banned from my movie theater for a year cause i threw a drink at the screen and it ripped the screen, this had little to nothing to do with the games, no wesker not stars members no tyrant and alice wasent even a character in the games mila johinavioch ruined the series, i dont care how everyone says it was good it was NOT!!! the worst movie EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" final-fantasyxcjo, IMDb

My take on the film: The first movie was okay, the sequels?

They have becoming increasingly pointless, with each film.

Jersey Girl (2004)
The Movie: The end of Bennifer, as J.Lo dies and Affleck has to bring up their daughter on his lonesome. A Kevin Smith film.

Why It Was Hated: Smith could do no wrong, until he dropped the View Askewniverse and tried to make a mainstream crowd-pleaser. His next film? Clerks 2.

Typical Online Review: "Such a dissapointment. Why did you let me down so bad!!!!!" James A, Rotten Tomatoes

My take on the film: Of all the films, Kevin Smith has made to date, it was actually a pretty decent film.
Agent Kermit D. Fonz's rating:
People who added this item 3967 Average listal rating (2712 ratings) 6.8 IMDB Rating 7
The Movie: Big-screen outing of DC Comics' cult anti-hero, a chain-smoking, bleach-blonde British occult detective.

Why It Was Hated: Chiefly, the casting of raven-haired surf dude Keanu Reeves as Constantine, although the gimmick of turning Constantine into a psychic also met with derision.

Typical Online Review: "Horrible and down right degrading adaptation of the comic book is a mishmash of stupidly masquerading as a film. Keanu Reeves should turn in his SAG card for his horrible performance and somebody should find the screenwriters of this movie and give them a good ass kicking for the horrible script they wrote." thedinasimple, IMDb

My take on the film: I know that I may get a lot of flack, but I kind of like the film.
Agent Kermit D. Fonz's rating:
People who added this item 162 Average listal rating (105 ratings) 3.5 IMDB Rating 3.6
Swept Away (2002)
The Movie: Guy Ritchie's wedding present to new wife Madonna - ditch the gangsters, and remake an Italian romantic drama on a Pacific island.

Why It Was Hated: Madonna's acting career has long inspired derision, so when she managed to bring down the reputation of Britain's hot talent, the knives were out even though the film never got a UK cinema release.

Typical Online Review: "I'm still fuzzy on why the director of Snatch and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels took it upon himself to cast his then wife and a barely audible Italian man in a barely intelligible remake of an already shitty movie.

Besides the fact that this film is in no way romantic, culturally relevant, or socially acceptable, the original source material is intercut with these strange dream sequences best described as the deleted parts of Madonna's later music videos." Spencer S, Rotten Tomatoes

My take on the film: After seeing the movie, I wished that my memory of seeing said film, could have been erased.

Epic Movie (2007)
The Movie: One of the many genre spoofs concocted by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer over the past decade. To be honest, we could have picked any of 'em.

Why It Was Hated: The Friedberg/Seltzer parodies are universally reviled but this one - because it targeted fanboy faves like Harry Potter and X-Men - gets particular stick.

Typical Online Review: "A comedy is supposed to make you laugh right? I mean, isn't that the basic criteria? Well, this tragic piece of garbage failed to even present a single good joke. It's so lame, stupid and badly timed that it almost put my little brother to tears." Mike S, Rotten Tomatoes

My take on the film: This film, it about as funny as a ingrown toe nail.
Agent Kermit D. Fonz's rating:
People who added this item 1888 Average listal rating (1263 ratings) 5.6 IMDB Rating 5.8
The Movie: Remake of the 1981 swords 'n' sandals fantasy epic, with Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion replaced with CGI and Sam Worthington lopping Medusa heads.

Why It Was Hated: Regardless of the usual (lack of) quality to be expected from cashing-in on a fanboy favourite, this earned extra venom for its appalling post-conversion 3D.

Typical Online Review: "Was there any tension? Action? Was there a soul? Nope none of it. For example in the original Perseus had to find the pond where the Pegasus would drink from. He had to get the invisisble cloak and the lasso. He had to not only capture the flying horse of beauty , he also had to tame it. It was amazing and breath taking.

In this version , he just stumbles into a field of Pegasus , that are Zeus most pride possession and walks up to it and that is all there is. That is the kind of story telling this writers come up with." Samfilms, JoBlo

The Movie: Michael Bay-produced remake of the Wes Craven classic, with Jackie Earle Haley donning Robert Englund's razor-blade gloves.

Why It Was Hated: The very words 'Michael Bay horror remake' can trigger a Pavlovian response amongst fanboys, but this one scored worse than most for ditching the dark humour of Englund's portrayal for a dour, brutal reimaging.

Typical Online Review: "It's amazing to me that filmakers can't summon up competent remakes of old horror films. Given the source material, and the advancements in special effects, a remake of "A Nightmare On Elm Street", should have been a slam dunk. Instead, it was a miserable, and often boring, disaster." Jason S, Rotten Tomatoes

My take on the film: The movie, could have been so much better.

Jackie Earle Haley, was okay as Freddy, but not great.
Agent Kermit D. Fonz's rating:

The Movies: Cheating slightly, but it's too hard to call between the Wachowski brothers' two sequels, which added bad raves and philosophical talk to the original's action-renewing template.

Why They Were Hated: Reloaded confused everybody by splicing car chases with white-haired non-explainer The Architect; Revolutions simply bored.

Typical Online Review: "My vote would probably be Matrix Reloaded. Never have I been let down so much by a sequel. Matrix Revolutions was even worse. I'll never watch those abominations ever again." joeblow, avsforum.com

Godzilla (1998)
The Movie: Roland Emmerich followed up Independence Day by bringing Japan's marauding monster to the streets of New York... where it promptly gets lost.

Why It Was Hated: After widespread praise for its innovative teaser campaign, movie fans felt particularly short-changed by the lack of logic or imagination in the finished product.

Typical Online Review: "This movie proves several things: there is no sure thing in life, many very stupid people work in Hollywood, and plot does matter." Michael Lyle, IMDb
Agent Kermit D. Fonz's rating:
People who added this item 3639 Average listal rating (2492 ratings) 6 IMDB Rating 6.1
Van Helsing (2004)
The Movie: Stephen Sommers graduates from The Mummy to doing the rest of the old classics at the same time, as Hugh Jackman's monster hunter goes after Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster and the Wolfman.

Why It Was Hated: A barometer of bad modern blockbusters, Sommers was ridiculed for throwing way too many elements at the screen amidst slapdash CGI.

Typical Online Review: "Five minutes into this film I was already squirming in my seat. I've never walked out of a movie before, I think it's foolish to judge a film unless you have seen it in its entirety. Van Helsing almost had me running for the door. Many people have pointed out that this was only intended as a summer blockbuster, a no brainer with big SFX, lots of one liners and plenty of merchandising possibilities. That's no excuse for this pile of poo.." Simon McMahon, IMDb

The Spirit (2008)
33. The Spirit (2008)

The Movie: Having cut his teeth in movies with Sin City, comic book legend Frank Miller had a go at one of his key influences, Will Eisner's 1940s newspaper strip.

Why It Was Hated: The Miller-ised movie brought kinky costumes and grotesque black comedy to the fore, but lacked the panache that a true filmmaker might have brought.

Typical Online Review: "Thought this might be good from the previews. Boy was I wrong! Honestly, do yourself a favor and stay away from this movie. No plot, horrible humor and immensely terrible acting. We almost walked out, but were waiting for a glimmer of hope. Movie ended and nothing happened. I'd rather stare at a burning candle for two hours..." cali, Lotus Talk

The Movie: Paul Haggis' Altman-esque study of racial tension in multi-cultural Los Angeles was the big winner at the Oscars, upsetting a form book that had seen Brokeback Mountain win at every other ceremony.

Why It Was Hated: The Oscar triumph gave fresh impetus to voices who had criticised Haggis' film for its repetitive structure and manipulative button-pushing of political correctness.

Typical Online Review: "But even worse than that, the racism theme was so over-the-top, stab-you-in-the-head obvious. Is this what passes for great dialogue these days? Characters overtly proclaiming their racist stereotypes and then acting upon them? After 10 minutes I was screaming: 'OK, you're all racists ot racist stereotypes, I get it!'" Ramsey, Democratic Underground

Sucker Punch (2011)
The Movie: Zack Snyder's first big-screen original - a loopy fantasy of fetishwear, mental illness and massive action scenes.

Why It Was Hated: Snyder said it was a satire of fanboy misogyny - but most bloggers reckoned it was misogyny pure and simple. With random, boring action.

Typical Online Review: "i didnt get it- she was like dancing and they never showed it....and then shes fighting shit creatures and shit and wtf idk i fucking hated this movie" Vieda Boss, 'I Hate Sucker Punch' Facebook group

The Movie: A cloned Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is thrown back into the nightmare in Jean-Pierre Jeunet's fourth installment of the Alien saga.

Why It Was Hated: An unnecessary addition to the story, muzzled by the law of diminishing returns and the misjudged tone of black comedy. The less said about the Newborn, the better.

Typical Online Review: "NOTHING could have prepared me for just how bad this movie is. How the fuck could something like this happen? It's literally one of THE very worst movies I've ever seen and Wynona Ryder puts on what is probably the worst performance of all time. This is much worse than some of the shit i've seen on SyFy.

Sequels usually suck but I'm having trouble thinking of a bigger drop off in the quality of films between sequels." DarkKnight81, JoBlo

The Movie: Peter Parker stops having fun, in the face of a triple onslaught from Venom, Sandman and a new Green Goblin.

Why It Was Hated: Everybody knows threequels try to do too much, but Marvel went ahead anyway (and largely against Raimi's wishes). Result: huge box-office but a major fan backlash.

Typical Online Review: "The main villains get only a short amount of screen time, and by the "big" ending you're just wondering when Dawson's Creek is going to end and when Spiderman 3 will begin. 90% of the film consists of Peter Parker walking around, crying, and making a fool of himself in various over-the-top ways." imajestr, IMDb

The Movie: Carrie, Samantha and the other two head off to enjoy/insult Abu Dhabi in a chick flick that is longer than 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Why It Was Hated: Well, the fellas would have hated it regardless, but even female fans turned on a show that had lost its bite for xenophobic cheap shots and self-parody.

Typical Online Review: "A horrible movie, with nothing to offer either than the envy of you being in adu dabi, honestly i should have never even entered the cinema room to watch this low acting, plotless piece of shit." Pedro H, Rotten Tomatoes
Agent Kermit D. Fonz's rating:
The Movie: Captain Jack Sparrow is stuck in Davy Jones' locker, which means Keira and Orlando are the stars until they can free him. Please, hurry.

Why It Was Hated: Where the first Pirates film was praised for its lightness of touch, by the time of the two-and-three-quarter hour threequel, this was a victim of its waterlogged world-building.

Typical Online Review: "I feel that it could have been an hour shorter and been awesome. It d-r-a-g-g-e-d so bad. I kept checking the time wondering when Jack would show up and when it would ever get good. Just as it started getting good, BLAM more suckage." roachc42, Yahoo Answers

The Movie: Tim Burton takes a break from making Johnny Depp look weird to turn future wife Helena Bonham Carter into a chimp.

Why It Was Hated: Burton failed to see the potential for political allegory or satire in the story, seeing only a bunch of talking apes to film chasing Marky Mark.

Typical Online Review: "Nobody knows why the apes look down on the humans so much or why the humans don’t fight back. Especially since in this one apes are afraid of water. You fuckin humans ever heard of a dam? Just flood the fuckers. Planet of the beavers coulda figured that one out why can’t planet of the humans?" Vern, Outlawvern.com

The Avengers (1998)
The Movie: The classic eccentric action-comedy of British 1960s TV gets a blockbuster makeover with Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman taking on Sean Connery.

Why It Was Hated: A string of surreal set-piees untethered to any controlling intelligence, this is a film apparently made by people who didn't "get" what made the original such a camp, catty delight.

Typical Online Review: "IT was worse than my wildest nightmares -- and I have an excellent imagination. Thurman was as bad as I thought, Fiennes had nothing to play to. Macnee, oh, how it could have improved if we'd seen him.

I think this movie is terrible because they didn't get the joke. The Avengers is cheeky, campy, fun, and never without some form of the double entendre somewhere. Apparently, the script writes never actually saw the series and didn't get the joke." maltcavet, IMDb

Pearl Harbor (2001)
The Movie: Michael Bay follows up his mega-hit disaster flick Armageddon with a swerve into real-life tragedy, aided by stars Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett.

Why It Was Hated: It desperately wants to be Titanic, but the mismatch between the earnest intent of the material and the director's fondness for blowing shit up leaves things alternating between dull and bombastic.

Typical Online Review: "I was conned into watching Pearl Harbor on the basis that "it's so bad it's good". Like hell it is! This film is just spleen-rupturingly awful! How anyone in their right mind can possibly give it ten stars is beyond me. It's the movie equivalent of a full frontal lobotomy.

In fact if anyone from the CIA is reading, I suggest using it as an aggressive interrogation technique." Alan, Internet Movie Script Database
Agent Kermit D. Fonz's rating:
The Movie: Alan Moore's cheeky British spin on the superhero tag-team became a notorious disaster that drove star Sean Connery into retirement.

Why It Was Hated: Moore's disciples sided with the cankanterous comic writer after he disowned it for sucking out the originality into a cookie-cutter blockbuster.

Typical Online Review: "This is the only movie that I can think of where after it ended, I was seething with anger at the waste of money and time on the part of myself and everyone involved in making it.

No wonder Alan Moore refused to have anything to do with V for Vendetta (a phenomenal film) after this debacle. It's not bad in an entertaining way, like Showgirls. It's bad in a way that makes you want to claw your eyes out." pleh, IMDb

The Movie: Star/producer John Travolta uses his post-Tarantino cachet to make his dream project, an adaptation of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard's sci-fi epic.

Why It Was Hated: Travolta's hubris - he declared the film "like Star Wars, only better" - became a rallying cry to disparage a film of universally poor artistic choices, not least amongst them the hairdos.

Typical Online Review: "The end result is a product that is a real mess with almost nothing of value in it. It is relentlessly shoddy and I almost wish the 'worst film ever' hype would drop off just so that this film could slowly fade from our memory and be lost in time." bob the moo, IMDb

The Movie: Neil LaBute remakes the British pagan-horror classic with Crazy Nic Cage taking on the role of the naïve copper first essayed by Edward Woodward.

Why It Was Hated: LaBute's notoriously non-PC opinions turned the murderous community into a harem of harpies, the misogyny symbolised by a soon-to-be-infamous scene where Cage punches a woman while dressed in a bear suit.

Typical Online Review: "what ever you do do not waste your time on this pointless. movie. A remake that did not need to be retold. Everyone coming out of the theater had the same comments. Worst movie I ever saw. Save your time and money!!!" drummerofgash, IMDb

The Movie: With Bryan Singer bailing to make Superman Returns, Marvel played safe by replacing him with the commercially-minded Brett Ratner.

Why It Was Hated: Ratner's fondness for an unpretentious summer tentpole movie didn't endear him to fanboys aggrieved he'd cheapened Singer's careful character building.

Typical Online Review: "The character development which was key to the other two's success was lost in the midst of this anti-climactic explosion. Goes against comic books, kills off wrong characters (although Fox did supervise it.) A let down to any fan of the original. I very much want to forget this movie ever happened." Nikhil N., Rotten Tomatoes
Agent Kermit D. Fonz's rating:
The Movie: Pitting two franchises against each other is a longstanding source of online fangasm. Paul W. S. Anderson does the sums - "whoever wins, we lose."

Why It Was Hated: Cross-breeding these two unique species required a deft storyteller; instead Anderson dropped everyone into a dimly-lit, scrappily-edited cluster-fuck.

Typical Online Review: "One of the stupidest and most disappointing movies I've ever seen in my life! If you thought Paul Anderson fucked up Resident Evil bad, just watch how he manages to flush both Alien and Predator franchises down the toilet in one spectacularly awful movie." Ian B, Rotten Tomatoes

The Movie: Remember those mythical, sword-swinging immortals fighting to become only one? Well, guess what. They're aliens.

Why It Was Hated: Many sequels have tried to trash the reputation of their parent movie, but few succeeded as well as this. It took a whole TV series to retcon away the stench.

Typical Online Review: "Never in the field of human endeavour has there been an act of such instrumental, destructive, diabolical folly as this justifiably reviled, quasi-sequel to the original 1986 fantasy in which immortal warriors duelled throughout the ages until one remained.

Yes, its Highlander II - a film so bad that Robert Mugabe refused to show it to white farmers on the grounds that it would be 'exceptionally cruel'." David Frames, IMDb

Love Actually (2003)
The Movie: Richard Curtis ropes in his A-list mates, plus Martine McCutcheon, into a rosy-hued, heart-on-sleeve celebration of Yuletide romance.

Why It Was Hated: Long a target for rom-com haters, Curtis drew flak for the sheer size of the bullseye he painted on his film:a sentimental commercial for chick-flick fantasyland.

Typical Online Review: "Love Actually was one of the worst films of all time, the only film I asked for my money back at the end of which I was forced to stay for. A collection of c**p actors and Liam Neeson playing out a whole pile of different cheesy awful plots yeah that sounds great. The prats who liked that film are the reason it has not been condemed." lgrayne, Total Film

Hulk (2003)
The Movie: Marvel risked his reputation for popcorn entertainment by unleashing award-winning auteur Ang Lee on one of its most famous comic creations.

Why It Was Hated: Fanboys revolted against Lee's cerebral, sensual take on superhero lore to such an extent Marvel rebooted the franchise in The Incredible Hulk. Except reaction to that was mixed, too.

Typical Online Review: "Do yourself a favor. If you haven't seen this movie... DON'T. I feel like I wasted 2 hours and 8 dollars on this piece of garbage. If you want to see a movie that has action or explosions, find a theater still showing Matrix Reloaded, or wait for T3. Either way, avoid this one." gavynhelfyre, IMDb

Catwoman (2004)
he Movie: A "quasi-spinoff" (as Wikipedia puts it) with Oscar winner Halle Berry donning the catsuit as completely new superheroine Patience Phillips.

Why It Was Hated: That "quasi" is the giveaway. With scant regard for the Batbrand, comic-book movie fans were quick to voice their disapproval.

Typical Online Review: "I still cant believe they actually put the DC logo on the opening credits... that movie could not have had to less with the Dc Catwoman if it was played by a guy......bad characterisation, really bad plot, make for a really, really bad movie!" Jade Chihuahua, Killer Movies

The Movie: James Cameron's mega-bucks 3D extravaganza reinvented cinema for the digital age, en route to becoming the biggest box-office hit in history.

Why It Was Hated: Frustrated moviegoers couldn't square the combination of state-of-the-art technique and simplistic storytelling, amongst many other weird ironies. Such as…

Typical Online Review: "Here is a story with an alleged anti-corporatist message, underwritten by a huge corporation to the tune of $250 million plus. It preaches closeness with (outer-space) nature, but must have produced CO2 emissions at the rate of a dozen oil refineries.

It alleges respect for women, who are shown to be uniformly, pornographically subservient to the alpha males. Its message is anti-violence, but it's also stuffed to the gills with the glorious super-lethal war machines from which toys and video games can and will be fashioned." Maria Bustillos, The Awl

The Movie: M. Night Shyamalan branches out by making a kid-friendly fantasy based on the bedtime stories he made up for his children.

Why It Was Hated: Never mind the muddled narrative and wet world-building. Shyamalan earned the biggest wrath for casting himself as a visionary writer whose work will save the world. Not on this evidence.

Typical Online Review: "Don't even get me started with "Lady in the Water". That was one of the worst excuses of a movie I've ever watched! You could have done something so much more worth the two hours you wasted! There is no story! Everything is so random!" Tabby, Yahoo Answers

The Happening (2008)
The Movie: M. Night Shyamalan's comeback after the misfire of Lady In The Water returns him to his spooky, twisty-turny roots. Right?

Why It Was Hated: Wrong. This was Shyamalan's second strike, achieved on the back of wooden performances, an unthreatening premise and that scene of Mark Wahlberg communing with the plants. One more strike and you're out, Night.

Typical Online Review: "The Happening is the absolute worst movie I have ever seen. I would rather watch a Spice-World marathon movie, 6 hours of Cabin boy, or my dog lick himself for 2 hours.

This movie was ridiculous. We all waited for a "twist" at the end and all we got was a piddle ending that went out with a whimper. I would rather have learned that all the characters were aliens and the story took place on the moon. I want my $27 back for this garbage." Jason S, Yahoo Answers

The Movie: M. Night Shyamalan decides to play safe with a blockbuster adaptation of the much-loved animated fantasy series Avatar. No, no that Avatar.

Why It Was Hated: Shyamalan was accused of whitewashing the series' Asian characters, all the more galling because the director is Indian-American. Add to that shonky post-conversion 3D and a plodding pace and it was game over for 'three strikes' Shyamalan.

Typical Online Review: "I saw the movie. I went to the midnight showing. My friends and i dressed up. Half way through the movie my friend stood up, yelled "screw this shit" and left the theater. I've never been more proud of him. HOW CAN YOU MAKE A MOVIE AND NOT KNOW THE MAIN CHARACTERS NAME?!" nami647, YouTube

The Movie: Bond turns 40, as Pierce Brosnan gets to ogle Halle Berry and receives some unusual gadgets from new Q John Cleese.

Why It Was Hated: Bond movies have always danced on the tightrope between iconic and idiotic. This is the closest it came to falling off, with its invisible car and glacier para-surfing.

Typical Online Review: "Die Another Day just takes most of the worst elements of the Bond movies and dials them up to 11. It's a fight, with a genetically-altered villain, and his turncoat ice-queen accomplice, on an airplane, that flies through a death ray, and it's breaking up!!!!!!!!! Jeez guys, tone it down a little. It's like watching two swarms of bees fighting each other; all furious activity and no development or tension." Robot Arm, Straightdope

The Movie: Uwe Boll made his name (for the little it's worth) with this adaptation of Sega's zombie shoot-em-up game.

Why It Was Hated: Boll made a lot of enemies here for his film's haphazard editing, auto-pilot performances and the cynical, nonsensical insertion of game footage into the action sequences.

Typical Online Review: "House of the Dead was awful, especially the screen shots from the game that kept appearing. It was a fucking sham. papabeard, Killermovies.com

The Movie: James Cameron takes on the iceberg of opinion with a film so full of ballast it would sweep both the box-office and the Oscars.

Why It Was Hated: The trivialisation of a major real-life disaster via cardboard characters, dodgy stereotypes and a manipulative central romance that asks us to care for Kate and Leo while hundreds of extras fall to their icy deaths.

Typical Online Review: "The problem with "Titanic" is that it's hideous incompetency cloaked in legitimacy. It looks good, crisp, exact, precise - just like all movies do these days. But the disgustingly bad characters and manipulative quality ruin everything." anonymous, Epinions
Agent Kermit D. Fonz's rating:
The Movie: The sequel to the Hasbro hit gave Michael Bay more opportunities to ogle Megan Fox and deliver CG smackdowns between robots who all look the same.

Why It Was Hated: By common consent the franchise's nadir (even Bay agrees), especially for the racist connotations of jive-ass Autobots Mudflap and Skids.

Typical Online Review: "i just had to let this out...when i saw the first movie, i was like...ooookaaayy..this is not wat i expectd but as a first time try, i just let it slide n thought the second one should be better n focus more on the TF's. i had faith back then....then came the second movie.........FUCK U! FUCK U! FUCK U! MICHAEL FUCKIN BAY!!!...i left the theater angry, pissed off, dissapointed, confused n other form of human rage....as of today, i have not seen the 3rd movie!! And i never fuckin will!!".Mr Zahar Haron, 'I Hate Michael Bay's Transformers' Facebook group

The Movie: Joel Schumacher's second and last Batflick threw off the darkness by throwing Arnie and Uma at new caped crusader George Clooney.

Why It Was Hated: After Tim Burton's Gothic vision, Schumacher's camp aesthetic restored the look and feel of the 60s TV series with an indigestible stew of bad puns, dayglo colour schemes and Batnipples.

Typical Online Review: "Anatomical nipples on the batsuit... Alfred's niece becomes batgirl... Alfred HAS a niece?!... George Clooney... worst Mr. Freeze ever... and I would argue that while Burton's Batman was a gothic landscape of black & white, Joel Schumacher just vomited the entire color wheel onto Gotham city." sidekick, Comic Book Resources

Psycho (1998)
The Movie: Gus Van Sant remakes the Hitchcock horror shot for shot. Except in colour. And with different actors.

Why It Was Hated: Using one of cinema's untouchable classics as the basis for a multi-million dollar art prank didn't do Van Sant any favours, with audiences quick to point out the film's pointlessness.

Typical Online Review: "Why? I wonder. A shot by shot massacre of one of the perennial classics. The color was jarring, the performances, atrocious. What was Vince Vaughn doing? Was it a parody? A bad joke? What the hell was it?" arichmondfwc, IMDb

The Movie: The "new Harry Potter," as ex-Hogwarts student R-Pattz moves to Stephenie Meyer's young adult series about vampire romance.

Why It Was Hated: Vampires are ice-cool, charming predators, not emo-kid losers who can't even get laid. Many of Meyer's Twi-hards felt it was toothless, too.

Typical Online Review: "it was the biggest let down ive had in a long time and it might sound silly because it was just a movie but for me it was more the books changed me some how and it was just compleatly butchered. they couldnt have made it any worse at all." Dani L, Yahoo Answers

The Movie: Tom Hanks plays the titular man-child tripping his way through the key events of the baby-boomer generation.

Why It Was Hated: The chocolate-box sentiment, hiding a reactionary vision of American society in which protest is punished and stupidity reigns. Oh, and beating Pulp Fiction and Shawshank to the Oscars didn't help.

Typical Online Review: "Gump's wisdom is so cliché it fails even to rise to the level of platitude. "Life is like a box of chocolates... you never know what you're gonna get." I hate to point out the obvious fact that most boxes of chocolate come with a little slip telling you exactly where to find the coconut crunch, but I think it illustrates a useful point. (Also, how wacked out of your mind do you have to be to accept candy from a mongoloid stranger on a park bench?)." Hannibal Chamberlein, Yahoo

The Movie: Even longer ago in a galaxy far, far away, George Lucas created the most anticipated movie event… well, ever.

Why It Was Hated: Jar Jar, trade disputes, poor continuity, Jar Jar, midchlorians… and did we mention Jar Jar?

Typical Online Review: "Star Wars was an entertaining film with amusing and engaging characters. Phantom Menace is a pompous, boring affair which wants to be regarded as a religious experience (re : Anakin's virgin birth) but is more like being bothered by Jehovah's Witnesses." Professor Plums, H2G2

Here it is 50 of the films, "apparently" hated by well nearly everyone, I guess.

Or at least according to Total Film.

Along, with my take on the film. If I have seen the film, yet.
