12 Years a Slave (2013)
This was an amazing movie. Out of all the movies about slavery, this one tackled that subject matter the best. I'm usually strong when it comes to violence in movies, but some of the violence in this film made me cringe quite a bit. It also had some touching scenes and it also made me think about slavery and wondering why people did it. The way they ended this movie was beyond perfect. When the movie ended, people were silent until they left the theatre room which shows how powerful this movie is. This movie will stay in my mind for a very long time and I will have to check out Steve McQueen's other work.

Gravity (2013)
I had the opportunity to go see this in theatres as a school field trip, so I decided to accept it because I heard many good things about it and because it was high on my anticipated movies list of this year. When the projector screen turned on there were no commercials or previews. It was just the Cineplex intro and after that the movie started right away. This is the best movie of 2013 and that's coming from a year that wasn't the best for movies. Visually this movie was amazing and so was everything else. This is the only good performance I've seen from Sandra Bullock. This is the movie you have to see in theatres. The picture, the sound and the 3D (Which was worth it.) is best when experienced at the theatres.

Before Midnight (2013)
I thought this was better than Before Sunset. While that movie was good, it didn't come close to being as good as Before Sunrise. While this one isn't as good as the latter movie, it's still an amazing movie. The movie is just dialogue, but it's very well-written and I liked seeing where the two main characters are now. I'm glad I finally saw it and now I've seen all of Richard Linklater's movies. I have to say that he's a very unique director and while he has made some great movies, he's also had a few misses.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Man of Steel (2013)
I didn't think this was possible, but this is the best movie of the year so far. From the moment it started I was thinking to myself "This is better than Superman Returns already." The visuals were amazing and action scenes were great. Some said they went on for too long, but I thought they added enough to them, so they wouldn't get boring unlike Iron Man 3. The acting was great for a Superman movie and for once Russell Crowe delivered a performance that really impressed me. This movie really exceeded my expectations and I think that this is The Dark Knight of the Superman franchise. I saw this in 2D and I thought the movie was fine that way, so I would recommend seeing it in 2D if you have the choice to.
moviewatcher122's rating:

This movie was even better than the first one. While I thought the first movie started off slow, this one had me sold right away. The characters have much better development and the movie is filled with great dialogue and amazing visuals. If you were one of those people that was disappointed with the first movie then you might be impressed with this sequel.
moviewatcher122's rating:

The Conjuring (2013)
What a great horror movie this was. This movie was very scary and for a horror movie the script in this movie was amazing. Just like Insidious this movie is destined to become a horror classic and is proof that James Wan is the best horror director working today.
moviewatcher122's rating:

I knew this movie was going to be good, but I didn't know I was going to love it this much. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised because the style of this movie reminded me of Little Miss Sunshine which I loved. This movie was very charming, heartfelt and hilarious.
moviewatcher122's rating:

The Place Beyond the Pines (2013)
This is the best movie of 2013 so far. The technical aspects of this movie are amazing and the story is pretty good too. It was a dark and unpredictable movie and has a surprisingly good performance from Bradley Cooper. If this film is playing in your local area then I urge you to see it because like I said before, it's the best movie of 2013.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Prisoners (2013)
What a hell of a movie this was. It had great story-telling, very well-done performances and you can really feel what the characters in this movie are going through. One of the better movies to come out last year and Denis Villeneuve is a director that's worth keeping an eye on.
moviewatcher122's rating:

John Dies at the End (2012)
Before seeing this I thought it was going to be another one of the good, but not great films that 2013 had to offer. I was really glad that I was wrong because this movie is awesome. This really was my kind of movie and it was more weird than I was even expecting it to be. There were some parts that reminded me of Naked Lunch which in this case is a good thing. The one reason I didn't give it a perfect score was because the band scene just didn't fit in with the movie in my opinion. Despite that, this is one of the great movies of this year that keeps it from being a really disappointing year for movies.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Captain Phillips (2013)
While this first thirty minutes were a bit slow, it doesn't matter too much since this movie is very intense and has one of Tom Hanks best performances ever.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Escape Plan (2013)
The idea of Arnold and Sylvester Stallone in the same film was an amazing idea. Sure they shared some screen time in The Expendables 2, but they're the two leading roles in this movie. I was actually expecting it to be ruined because of 50 Cent, but guess what? His performance didn't suck!!! This movie doesn't have any action in the beginning, but the build-up to this movie is brilliant. It starts of as a well-done prison film, but near the end it's non-stop action that fans of 80's action fans will love. While The Expendables 2 was a cool tribute to the genre, this is the better movie due to the action at the end and the very cool twists and turns.
moviewatcher122's rating:

The Family (2013)
This was even better than I expected. It was darkly funny and the third act was very intense and unsettling. It also delivers one of De Niro's best performance in years. I also found it to be a different take on the whole mafia film genre.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Prince Avalanche (2013)
I really wasn't expecting this to be anything great, but it managed to surprise me. I'm usually not a fan of Paul Rudd in leading roles, but his performance in this movie is the best I've seen from him. Emile Hirsch also delivers a great performance, but that's something that's to be expected from an actor like him. It also has some great dialogue and I just really liked what this movie had to say. Overall it's a near-perfect movie that's pretty much better than David Gordon Green's last three movies before this one.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Redemption (2013)
If you're looking for a typical Jason Statham action movie then this is not the best choice, but if you're looking for a different kind of movie with Jason Statham then check this movie out. This movie shows off his talent very well and I really liked this movie overall. It was refreshing to see a movie from last year that I was highly anticipating that wasn't disappointing. It's not a masterpiece, but it's a solid movie that is worth watching if you don't mind seeing something different from Jason Statham.
moviewatcher122's rating:

This Is the End (2013)
This was just as funny as I was hoped it would be. The idea of the actors playing as themselves was great and it's a hilarious movie from start to finish. Really the only thing I didn't like was that they ended this movie with a lame and forgettable song.
moviewatcher122's rating:

This was an awesome movie. I wasn't sure what to expect, since I never seen a film directed by Antoine Fuqua. The action scenes were good and even though one of them went on for a while, I can't say it ever got boring. One person said that this was what Die Hard 5 should've been and even though I haven't seen the new Die Hard, I can still say that I agree just because the new Die Hard movies don't feel like Die Hard movies. I think it's safe to say that this is the best movie of the year so far.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013)
I was a bit skeptical about this movie before watching, but I didn't have to worry when it started. It's not as great as the original, but it's still a solid sequel. It had some very good scares, but the one that scared me the most was the scene that's in the image I chose. It's far from being a masterpiece, but it's still a very good horror sequel.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Drug War (2012)
If there's one thing I love about Netflix, It's the selection of obscure foreign movies they have. This movie was very interesting and the shoot-out scene near the end of the movie was very well done. I have yet to see an Asian film that didn't impress me because I really love the way they make movies.
moviewatcher122's rating:

The Last Stand (2013)
This was a good return for Arnold. I didn't really mind that it started off slow because it made the action scenes worth the wait. The one-liners in this movie were good and it's great to see Arnold back in the movie business instead of his politics career. No it's not his best, but it's good entertainment.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Mud (2013)
This was unexpectedly a very good movie. It had well-written dialogue and very strong performances from the kids in this movie. As for Matthew McConaughey, his performance didn't leave much of an impression on me until the second half of the film. The dialogue he was given was good, but for the most part his performance didn't do much for me. It is still a very well-done movie with great storytelling.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Now You See Me (2013)
This was a very cool movie. The visuals were good, the story was good and there is good performances from the cast members. While watching this movie I couldn't help but think of it as Ocean's 11 except with magic. I think that's a good thing in this case because I thought it was more entertaining than the other movie and I thought it was a bit more wittier. I'm glad this movie was just as good as I anticipated.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Despicable Me 2 (2013)
I actually thought this was good as the original. The story wasn't anything great, but I didn't mind that much because I thought it was as funny as the first one. I saw this one in 3D and I didn't think it added anything to the experience, but it was cool.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Wrong (2012)
I really enjoyed the movie Rubber, so I was really interested in seeing Quentin Dupieux's next movie. Just like the latter movie, this is one of those movies that you will either like or hate. While the plot is simple, the way it was executed was really good. The character development and dialogue was good and it's just an unusual movie overall. Even though Rubber is the better film, this is still a very good movie and it's worth watching if you're looking for something different.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Birth of the Living Dead (2013)
When I was looking for documentaries to add to my Netflix queue, I found this movie and decided that I felt like watching it now. It was a really interesting and informative documentary about Night of the Living Dead and the impact it had on people during the 60's. Even when it seems to drag on at times, it's still able to give some interesting information. It's far from perfect, but it's worth watching if you're a fan of Night of the Living Dead.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Since this was very high on my most anticipated list, I decided to go see it as soon as I could. I'm glad to say that it lived up to my expectations. It started off a bit slow, but the movie got even funnier when Jim Carrey showed up. Like most people I thought it was great to see him with his trademark humor that made him famous instead of starring in mostly kids films. So far, this is the funniest comedy of the year and it's a shame it has been doing poorly at the box office. The general public just wants to see slapstick stuff like Identity Thief instead of a comedy that relies on more than that.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Warm Bodies (2013)
I didn't have much expectations for this, but since this got good reviews, I decided to see this with low expectations. For me this was the first surprisingly good movie of this year. The comedy, drama and romance actually work in this movie. It also made me jump a few times which is also surprisingly. This was a movie that exceeded my expectations and I'm glad I saw.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Snitch (2013)
On my list of most anticipated movies of this year I was guessing that it wasn't the typical Dwayne Johnson action vehicle judging by the trailer. I was pretty much right, since this is barely an action movie. It's more of a drama/thriller and a very good one. This is the best I've seen from Dwayne Johnson and it proves he is a better actor than he gets credit for. Good movie that was even better than the trailers.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Gangster Squad (2013)
This is the first movie I saw in the cinema this year and it was a good choice. I liked the dark tone, the editing and Sean Penn's performance. Not the best gangster movie ever made, but it was worth the wait and proves that Ruben Fleischer is cut out for directing these kind of films.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Dark Skies (2013)
This was a good movie. The story was good, the acting was decent and it had some odd scenes. Not one of the best horror movies in recent years, but probably the best horror movie of this year, so far.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Oz the Great and Powerful (2013)
Even though the dialogue seems bland at times and the acting isn't always good, the visuals and imagination put into this movie make it worth seeing just for that.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Stand Up Guys (2013)
While this movie wasn't great, it is still entertaining. It had some good laughs and I can say that the idea of Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin in the same film lived up to its potential. I didn't think an ambiguous ending was necessary for this movie though.
moviewatcher122's rating:

This movie was surprisingly good. While I didn't like how the main characters in this movie are real life criminals that did some very disgusting things, I did laugh quite a bit and I thought it was nice to see Michael Bay direct something different for a change. The movie reminded me of when he directed movies like Bad Boys and The Rock instead of a million fucking Transformers movies. It's not a great film, but it's much better than I was anticipating.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Even though this movie is ridiculous, it was supposed to be and enjoyed it for what it is. The 3D was surprisingly good in this movie too.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Bad Milo! (2013)
This was a very weird movie. It has a very fucked up premise and the execution was... interesting. It was an entertaining movie that has fun with its premise, but it's not for everyone.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Spring Breakers (2012)
Before this movie came out, I was expecting this to be very generic, but when I heard it was different than I thought, I put this movie on my radar. This was good, but it felt very weak at times. The songs on this movie were poor choices. The acting from most people was just average, but James Franco did have a good and sometimes over the top performance. There were enough good things for me to give it a good rating, but it really could've been better.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Kick-Ass 2 (2013)
What a disappointment! While it has some good action scenes and some funny parts, not all the jokes worked and the dialogue wasn't that good. Jim Carrey's performance was unlike anything he's ever done before and it's a shame that he was underused in this movie because if he was in the movie more then this probably would've been a good movie. Aaron Johnson's character wasn't likeable as he was in the first movie, but Hit-Girl was just as awesome as she was in the first movie. If Matthew Vaughn was in charge of this movie then it would've been much better, but since he wasn't I guess this is just a sequel that shouldn't have happened.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Iron Man 3 (2013)
Wow, this was disappointing. I wanted to like this because it's a fucking Iron Man movie and I enjoyed the first two, but this wasn't as good as I was hoping. The main problem is that it takes itself too damn seriously. When I saw the trailer for this I was assuming it would be a little more serious than the first two movie, but when I saw the trailer I was actually excited for a darker version of the series. After seeing this it just seemed unnecessary. It does have some humor like all the Iron Man movies, but not all of it worked. I also thought that the whole think felt rushed. Now here's the things that I liked about it. The acting in this movie was good. Robert Downey Jr. was good although he has seen better days, Don Cheadle was good and I wish I saw more of him, since he wasn't in the movie that much. Ben Kingsley is the show-stealer though. The action scenes were good despite the fact that the last one dragged on and the visuals were cool. I'd be lying if I said that I didn't enjoy this movie, but I really thought that it could've been better and maybe Shane Black directing it wasn't the best idea after all. If there is a fourth one coming out then I won't be seeing it in theatres.
moviewatcher122's rating:

The Croods (2013)
This movie was surprisingly overrated. While visually the movie was amazing, the characters weren't that great and it was surprisingly lacking in the laughs department. Also a couple of the running gags got old pretty quick. It's an OK movie, but it could've been better.
moviewatcher122's rating:

The World's End (2013)
This movie wasn't as funny as it should've been. While it did have its funny moments, Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright don't use the best of their humor in this movie and some jokes in this movie are funnier than others. I also thought the action in this movie was pretty repetitive. This is just another disappointing movie that 2013 had to offer.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
Whoop-dee-fucking-doo! Another dissapointing movie that 2013 had to offer! While I'm not that familiar with Star Trek, I really enjoyed the first movie and while I wasn't highly anticipating this sequel, I still had good expectations for it. Throughout the whole movie I was wondering what this movie was doing wrong. It wasn't until the end of the movie that I realized that it was too dark. It's a Star Trek movie! Why did you diagnose your script with Iron Man 3 Syndrome? While the special effects were amazing and Leonard Nimoy as Spock was great, the other aspects in this movie were mediocre at best. I would call this The Phantom Menace of Star Trek, but that movie was by far more entertaining than this one.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Oblivion (2013)
What a disappointment. This movie was very high on my anticipated movies list of 2013, so I was still expecting something good from this movie. The talent in this movie was wasted, the movie starts off very slow and this film is pretty boring. While the action was somewhat entertaining, this whole movie feels like it ripped off a ton of sci-fi movies. What's even worse about this movie is that the plot sounded good on paper. This is just a forgettable and unoriginal sci-fi movie.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Turbo (2013)
This wasn't that good of a movie. The animation was very good, but the characters weren't too likable and the humor was mostly lacking. Kids will really enjoy this movie, but adults probably won't find too much to like about this movie.
moviewatcher122's rating:

What a huge, huge, HUGE mixed bag! While there were some good segments, the bad ones really outweighed the good ones. Only watch if you're willing to watch the bad segments to get to the good ones.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Side Effects (2013)
I knew this movie was going to suck from seeing the trailer and because of the premise, but I saw it to see if I could prove myself wrong. The first half of this movie was bad enough, but the second half was even worse. Most of the acting sucked, it was pretty boring and I couldn't take it seriously. The scene where Channing Tatum gets stabbed to death had me laughing and it's mainly because the scene is ridiculously stupid and because his character wasn't even close to being well-developed. There were a few good things in this movie like Jude Law's performance, but this was not my kind of movie. I'm surprised that people have the balls to compare this movie to Alfred Hitchcock's work.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Dallas Buyers Club (2013)
I might get some hate for this, but I couldn't stand this movie. Some of you may know that I cannot stand Matthew McConaughey even in his newer movies. His performance in this movie is no exception. He delivered the most over the top performance in his whole career and that's saying a lot. While I do think Jared Leto is a great actor (who should stick to acting instead of singing in his awful band), his performance was horrible! He couldn't pull off the type of role he was playing! It's not just the acting I couldn't stand about this movie. The dialogue and the way this movie was edited also bugged me. While the true story this movie is based on is amazing, everything I can't stand about this movie kills it for me. The reason my rating isn't lower is because there were a few scenes in this movie that weren't as painful to watch as most of the scenes. If you liked this movie then that's perfectly OK. I just seem to be in the minority of people who hated this movie.
moviewatcher122's rating:

*sigh* This is another one of those cases where the trailer is funnier than the actual movie. Most of the time it feels like this movie isn't even trying to be funny. No, it actually feels like the people behind this movie knew it was bad and just decided to put the funny parts into the trailer to trick people into seeing it because there were only two funny jokes in this movie that weren't already in the trailer. Melissa McCarthy was annoying and unfunny and Sandra Bullock was awkward and it looks like she was embarrassed to be in this movie. I know I say this quite a bit, but 2013 wasn't a very good year for movies and it especially wasn't a good year for comedy. The only good ones that come to mind are This is the End and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. The World's End was a letdown and movies like We're The Millers and Bad Grandpa which some people call the funniest movies of the year are ones that I have no interest in seeing. We also got Grown Ups 2 which is possibly the worst comedy of all time. Then we have this movie which shouldn't have been made and it's the worst buddy cop movie ever made.
moviewatcher122's rating:

Frozen (2013)
What a huge letdown. I was at least expecting something decent judging from the overwhelming amount of hype, but I what I got was an overrated piece of snowman shit. The biggest problem I had with this movie was the amount of songs. It wouldn't be a problem if the songs were any good. Almost all the songs were generic and forgettable. Let It Go is decent, but it's still overrated. I pretty much found the whole movie to be generic from the story to the characters. What did I think of the humor? Wait a minute... this movie had humor? I thought most of the so-called humor was just people falling down. When this movie actually attempted humor it just fell flat for me. This movie had only one funny part and it's not even a line most people remember. This movie is the most overrated animated film I've ever seen.
To the people who are still obsessing over this movie:
Let it go, let it go
This movie is no Pinocchio
Let it go, let it go
I would rather be watching Turbo
I don't care what you're going to say
Let your comments be filled with rage
This isn't Disney's best movie anyway

moviewatcher122's rating:

I don't think a great premise has been executed this poorly before. They take an original premise about murder being legal for 12 hours and turn it into a generic slasher movie. My idea of a movie with that premise would be having it a movie with multiple perspectives on the day of the purge, but I guess we just can't have nice things because this is the kind of shit that makes money. I could forgive this movie for being a generic slasher movie if it wasn't so damn boring. Nothing about this movie was entertaining and it just feels like one of those horror movies that don't need to exist. The only positive I have with this movie is that Ethan Hawke's performance. I liked how he showed interest in his performance instead of phoning it in just to make a quick buck. Other than that I really hated this movie and the fact that it wasted a great premise is the main reason I can't give it more than one star.
moviewatcher122's rating:

This was awful. The action sucked, the humor was extremely weak and it feels less of a Die Hard movie than Live Free or Die Hard. I enjoyed the previous one, despite its flaws, but the only redeeming quality to this piece of shit is the unintentional humor. Another thing about this movie I hated is that Bruce Willis really didn't seem to give a shit about his performance at all. I heard there is going to be a Die hard 6, so unless that one gets good reviews, I am finished with this franchise.
