How truthful is this film... no one will ever know. How can anyone know anything about a company (CIA) that (supposedly) deals with lies... again, no one will ever know.
Important issues are presented here: imperialism, espionage, loyalty, betrayal...
This film was certainly worth watching, for Matt Damon's performance (as Edward Wilson) especially. He and *he alone* c... read more

If De Niro had concentrated half as much on continuity and the pacing of his film than he did bringing together this stellar cast, this film might have grabbed me a bit more. It's an hour too long and for a film that spans decades the cast age remarkably well. The plot and subject matter did interest me, but by the time it got to the point I didn't care any longer.

Its ok to take your time when telling a story, but de Niro is overdoing it with "The good Shepperd".We hardly see anything happening and are therefore not involved in the "action".
Its even harder to follow because of continuous back and forth jumps in the timeline.
Not bad at all, no way, but too long and ... sorry ... boring.
Description:
Edward Wilson, the only witness to his father's suicide and member of the Skull and Bones Society while a student at Yale, is a morally upright young man who values honor and discretion, qualities that help him to be recruited for a career in the newly founded Office of Strategic Services (OSS, the predecessor of the Central Intelligence Agency). While working there, his ideals gradually turn to suspicion influenced by the Cold War paranoia present within the office. Eventually, he becomes an influential veteran operative, while his distrust of everyone around him increases to no end. His dedication to his work does not come wit

" DVD- 2hrs. 48min. First Viewing The Good Shepard is film that's hard to separate from it's ambition; it wants to show us that the CIA life is sprawling, but isolating, meandering, and mundane. In regard to showing that play out, De Niro does an excellent job; as a piece of cinema though, it's about a 50/50 effort. At nearly three hours in length, the meandering, episodic storytelling occasionally flashes with brilliance, but is often just too dull to ignite much. The cast, varying with what the"
