Little Women

There’s more than a little bit of Louisa May Alcott in Jo March, and there’s also a bit of Jo March in Greta Gerwig. Not only does Gerwig prove that there’s still life in Little Women, Alcott’s oft filmed novel of four daughters coming of age in the Civil War, but that there’s still nuances and reflexive layers to mine in the material. Gerwig restores various bits of autobiographical det... read more

Is feminist? Yeah, but first of all, there's struggle and contradiction inside family with no men. Jo is the feminist that negotiates, Amy profits, Emma just loves and accepts...

I wasn’t really dying to see another adaptation of this classic US novel but since it had been very well received, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, I still don’t think it is such a great story (I might have to read the book at some point to really judge it though) but Greta Gerwig definitely made the most of it. Best Picture Nominees (in Ten Sentences) (478 movies items)

"In the 2019 version of “Little Women,” Jo March (Saoirse Ronan), in the middle of publishing her novel, reunites with her sisters Meg (Emma Watson) and Beth (Eliza Scanlen) and their mother Margaret (Laura Dern) and reminisce about their childhood as Beth ails from scarlet fever. Meanwhile, Laurie (Timothee Chalamet) tries to confess his love to Amy (Florence Pugh), who is making an art career in Paris with her aunt (Meryl Streep) and has sworn off marriage forever. While I am mixed about th"

Well, to be honest, I still don’t think it is such a great story (I might have to read the book at some point to really judge it though) but Greta Gerwig definitely made the most of it. Concerning the directing and the writing, Gerwig had been really praised for her work but, to be honest, I had some mixed feelings. I mean, on one hand, it was clearly an ambitious project but, on the other hand, what was so ambitious about adapting a classic book which had been adapted so many times before? Concerning the back-and-forth in time, it is an overused gimmick which I see way too often nowadays and, in this case, it was only mildly effecti” read more

Mid-Year Oscars Predictions - 2019 Movies (10 movies items)

"Reasons for Prediction: There was instant buzz for this oft-remade story when Gerwig became slated to direct. It doesn't seem to have died down. The very likable and award-loving cast will help keep this prestige enough. But, I think Gerwig has to make this different and fresh enough to garner the nomination. Results: Nominated for Best Picture ONE Win Jacqueline Durran FOUR Additional Nominations: Lead Actress (Saoirse Ronan) Supporting Actress (Florence Pugh) Adapted Screen"
