Jim Jarmusch directs this indie gem in gorgeous black and white, and we feel his passion for his work: this is one of those wonderful films where the characters are tailor-made for the actors portraying them. And what fine actors they are—Tom Waits, John Lurie, and Roberto Benigni pour their essence into these three unfortunate men, and it is a treat to watch their personalities clash. To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and maybe I should re-watch it at some point. First of all, even though I did love some movies directed by Jim Jarmusch such as ‘Dead Man’, ‘Ghost Dog’ or ‘Only Lovers Left Alive’, I must admit that I actually had a hard time to care about his other movies, especially his early work from the 80’s. Description: Three men, previously unknown to each other, are arrested in New Orleans and placed in the same cell. Both Zack, a DJ, and Jack, a pimp, have been set up, neither having committed the crime for which they have been arrested. Their cellmate Bob, an Italian tourist who understands minimal English, was imprisoned for manslaughter. Zack and Jack soon come to blows and thereafter avoid speaking to each other. "First viewing - March 27th HBO Max It's impressive that such a minimal plot could captivate me as much as this did. Normally long stretches of nothing much happening in a film gets on my nerves, but that's never the case here. It looks great, & there's just something about these characters that kept me wanting to know what would happen to them. In the end I was satisfied with what I got. Not sure I'd go so far as to say it's great, but it's really good & I'm glad I watched it."
