Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Well, I’m surprised by just how much I enjoyed this tale of art forgery and “companionable alienation,” as Chuck Bowen of Slant put it so masterfully. Can You Ever Forgive Me? is a whooper of a true story that narrows its scope down to the twin points of the criminal activity and the deliciously odd friendship that blossoms to further it. Unconventional casting can lead to grand rewards, an... read more

So nice and harsh character of Lee Israel...Grant's character instead is a bit stereptyped but has great moments, and his ignorance of high brow culture and how it upsets Lee is amusing...

Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy) made her living in the 1970's and 80's profiling the likes of Katharine Hepburn, Tallulah Bankhead, Estee Lauder and journalist Dorothy Kilgallen. When Lee is no longer able to get published because she has fallen out of step with current tastes, she turns her art form to deception, abetted by her loyal friend Jack (Richard E. Grant). An adaptation of the memoir "Can You Ever Forgive Me?" relays the true story of the best-selling celebrity biographer (and friend to cats).

"Melissa McCarthy pulls off her best performance here, directed by one of the best new directors, Marielle Heller (also did the well-crafted "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), and the writing is subtly brilliant. "

Movies the giraffe watched in 2019: February (23 movies items)

"First viewing - Feb. 3rd I did kind of a period piece double feature on this Sunday afternoon, and here again we focus on someone past her prime. Much ado has been made of the performances of both Richard E. Grant and Melissa McCarthy, and I can confirm they both slay all over the place. The story is fascinating, and I especially appreciated that they don't try to redeem her character. I highly enjoyed the film and would happily sit through it again some time."

Film Journal 2019 (225 movies items)

"There is a lot of very impressive character work done in this movie through social cues and very little through dialogue. It's clear a lot of soul has been taken from the book it's based on rather than making a simple recounting of these events. I wish it resisted the (admittedly tempting) chance of over-dramatizing the events when things start getting rough."
