TRON: Legacy (2010)
So much better that I'd imagined! Visually stunning & yet in keeping with the 80's (- neons and electro soundtrack). I haven't seen the original, nor had I wanted to, but this was very entertaining.

Insidious (2011)
I can't believe this is so poorly rated on here! I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. In terms of "horror" I much prefer sinister supernatural ghost stories like this to out & out blood & gore slasher types.
This was creepy & intense plus had an interesting plot & some good performances.
A great addition to the genre.

Hanna (2011)
Different to what I expected in terms of style, but in a good way.
Despite imagining this to be all action I was surprised at being engaged by the storytelling & the visuals plus a well-suited soundtrack.
Great performances & a memorably entertaining movie.

Mary and Max (2009)
I should have watched this one sooner - it is such a great movie.
A stop-motion movie mainly for adults, the story is very heartwarming (& heartbreaking) yet humourous and certainly strikes a chord. Excellent characters & dialogue throughout (including narration) plus it was nice to see this different/darker style of animation once again.
An underrated little gem!

Drive (2011)
I feel the same about this movie as I did about Hanna - maybe not quite what I expected but it hooked me completely.
From the visual elements, cool soundtrack and great characters plus a story with a little mix of everything.
This starts with a tense little intro to Ryan Gosling's character, slows down with an ambient romantic set-up then switches to action (whilst not loosing any cool or ambience throughout!).
One I'd watch again.

Black Swan (2010)
I would say impressive performance by Natalie Portman but I already think she's an excellent actress - this intense role certainly adds to that merit.
I had no idea what to expect from this 'ballet' story but found it intriguing, a little creepy and haunting and pretty sad. The visuals add to the crazy element and the line between reality and what isn't becomes quite blurred.
Engaging movie.

Chani's rating:

Very faithful to the original movie (Let The Right One In/Låt den rätte komma in) but with a touch more blood to it's violent scenes. Retains the right atmosphere, great casting and I liked the way it was filmed. I do prefer the original but this is what a remake should be like.
Chani's rating:

The King's Speech (2010)
Excellent performances - notably deserved Oscar winner Colin Firth and (the lesser mentioned) Geoffrey Rush. A story which on a basic level sounds very simple but is humourous & touching and completely draws you in. I liked the cinematography also. A well-made film which builds to a triumphant ending.
Well worth the watch.

Source Code (2011)
This is probably one of the best films this year. I had no real idea of the premise of this movie so from start to finish I was fully engaged. [Don't read any synopsis/spoilers/reviews etc. if you haven't seen this already!]
I really liked the characters and the ending was pretty good too.

Never Let Me Go (2010)
Slow-paced and somber with engaging visuals. It has good characters which you never really feel like you know properly (probably in fitting with the rather bleak story).
Well-acted and an all-round good, simple drama.

X-Men: First Class (2011)
A great example of how to make a prequal.
I found it entertaining from the start. The characters worked well together and the story was really enjoyable.

Chani's rating:

I had difficulty deciding whether I liked this or not because it wasn't what I was expecting (don't judge a movie by it's title perhaps?!). On one level this, being a low-budget film, has indie movie appeal - dialogue, engaging visuals, good score & overall ambience throughout. On the downside - not the monster thriller I wanted to watch.
Not great - but I think I did like it a little.

Despicable Me (2010)
A lively & vibrant animated movie with some cute & memorable characters.
Pleasantly colourful visually & humourous to boot, the story was pretty standard but overall fun to watch. One to suit all ages.

Hereafter (2010)
Excellent opening scene! The pace does slow down but the great performances from the cast, plus an intriguing subject matter, kept me watching.
This is by no means a perfect movie (the ending fizzles out) but at times is quite thought-provoking & profound, but not overdone.
Overall - really good drama.

I'm Here (2010)
A sweet & thought-provoking short film.
I liked the characters (Sheldon was too cute) and the story. It is quite commendable that this movie can linger in your mind a lot longer than it's half hour running time.
In cahoots with the characters relationship - this is a film that gives more than it takes!

There were things that I liked & didn't like about this psychological thriller/horror.
It had some good performances mixed with characters that I didn't care for, some tense scenes mixed with stupidly comical ones that felt misplaced (guys fighting to save their girlfriends seemed silly!). This did work well with it's violent family theme as there was some creepy undercurrent that never presents itself fully running throughout the movie.
Also the ending is quite predictable - but mostly this actually was an entertaining movie.

Trust (2010)
If you're not put off by the heavy subject this is a really good film.
Great performances (great casting) and a well-executed story. I liked the fact that there was no glossing-over the plot/scenes in case it made the viewer uncomfortable and even the ending wasn't your typical "finalisation" which kind of makes it all the more believable.
An important watch for parents.. and for drama fans alike.

Priest (2011)
The story here was completely bland & did make me wonder how such unoriginal movies like this keep being made. I didn't care about the characters either. The effects were ok.. well at least good enough to keep me viewing until the end.
One to watch when there's no other great options.

Paul (2011)
Such a fun & amusing movie.
The interaction with the animated Paul was done really well & this has great moments of humour. Strangely I seem to be becoming a Pegg & Frost fan ~ and you don't need to be a sci-fi geek to watch this.
Overall the story here is not just about alien jokes, it has a bit of a heart too.
Very enjoyable.. I'd watch this again.

Rango (2011)
An interestingly "different" animated movie, with a Western premise, which is much more quirky than it is cute. Visually quite outstanding. This has some fun characters and a sometimes bizarre but mostly amusing story (I don't think this is aimed at young kids either.. despite how it appears.)
I found it a bit strange at first.. but overall I liked this movie.

The Other Guys (2010)
Some movies surprise you with how much better they are than you anticipated - this isn't one of them. In fact, the opposite.
I wanted to like this (decent cast list - not a big Will Ferrell fan though) but truthfully at nearly 2 hrs long and no real LOL moments, this tired me out.
At best it was slightly amusing in parts (desk pop, TLC song references, the odd one-liner) but most of the jokes were either OTT or just fell flat.
Too long & too unfunny.

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010)
A film that might have gone under the radar, but if you like comedy-horrors then I'm recommending it.
I watched this by chance, the movie has a good mix of gore & humour and is quite cleverly executed - even when what's coming becomes obvious, I still found it funny.

Thor (2011)
How dull.
Some good(ish) effects and action scenes (though not as many as I expected). I found the characters boring and spent most of the movie wondering why Natalie Portman agreed to star in this.
Overall this is a popcorn-flick which is on the childish side of comic book adaptions. Only worth watching if there's nothing else on.

The Rite (2011)
Quite clichéd on the whole exorcism & doubting front - though I have to admit that I found the "possessed" scenes the most entertaining parts of this film. I just found the story quite unoriginal.
An ok movie.

Chani's rating:

By the end I pretty much thought the whole plot was pretty pointless (and yet had potential). It seemed like they stole the idea of shadowy demons, like those in the movie Ghost, and then tried for a meaningful/religious ending with the 2 kids the only survivors?!. Positives? - I didn't mind the flashback sequences and this had a great soundtrack. Otherwise.. a waste of film.
Chani's rating:

The Town (2010)
An engaging crime movie with strong casting & characters. I think Ben Affleck is a better director than he is an actor but his lead role didn't put me off watching this movie thankfully.

Burke and Hare (2010)
There is something quite likeable about this film, it isn't hilarious or laugh-out-loud - more amusing & light-hearted (despite the true events that the main story originates from).
I liked the 19th century setting in this movie plus the cast list is pretty outstanding!
So - not excellent by far, but enjoyable enough.

Rio (2011)
This is such a pretty-looking movie.
The vibrancy and the Rio de Janeiro setting (just as lovely to look at as Paris was in Ratatouille) are the best things about this movie. Though it is a fun film with cute characters and the story was ok.
Another animated feature to appreciate with the kids!

Red Riding Hood (2011)
On a visual level this was pretty nice to watch. The plot - a good mystery, lots of 'trying to pick out the wolf' (who else was getting vibes from Grandma until the penny dropped?!) and the acting was ok too. Let's not talk about the CGI wolf though ha ha.
Not bad.. go see Twilight fans!

Despite the 2 star leads here this was incredibly average on all levels.
It never really gets going and the only good parts were the somewhat predictable 'twist' ending and the scenery.
A mediocre movie for a very rainy Sunday afternoon!

Devil (2010)
Good opening & this movie managed to hold my attention throughout.
It develops a nice creepy & suspenseful atmosphere, and despite it's preaching, is a very easy watch. The story shifts focus a lot with it's 'finger-pointing the culprit' (- though I managed to guess who it was early on by accident!)
I quite liked this overall.

Fun characters and quite comical throughout plus a story that is better than the average kids stories despite the obvious Superman link.
Well animated, and although I personally prefer the 'much compared with' & similar themed Despicable Me, this was still pretty enjoyable.

127 Hours (2011)
Impressive acting and well filmed. I must admit I did find this challenging to watch, i.e. knowing what this guy has to do to free himself & the exhausting wait for it to happen! All based on truth too.
Great cinematography & storytelling, the conflict of dread and optimism and the ideas of life & living throughout.
Absorbing movie.

West Is West (2010)
Having loved the first movie, I was expecting more hilarity (& culture clashes) with this sequal - this has plenty of the latter, but felt more 'serious' than the first.
Still funny in parts, this offers more drama to it's story of family, love, culture & immigration.
Both humourous & touching ~ I liked this film.

This was fairly enjoyable but dare I say that having watched the other Pirates.. movies then you pretty much know what to expect by now.
I'm always entertained by Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow though and the mermaids were a good character addition.
Good (though a step back in the franchise!) family film.

Little Fockers (2010)
Though by no means as funny as the first 2 movies, this was still quite enjoyable - probably because you expect the running theme of jokes between 'Jack' and 'Greg' and that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
I thought this might be a bit more about the introduction of the kids too, given the title, but it wasn't!
An alright movie.

The Adjustment Bureau (2011)
A slick & somewhat thought-provoking movie that mixes sc-fi/thriller with a good dose of romance.
With likeable & well-played characters, esp. David & Elise (good chemistry between Matt Damon & Emily Blunt) the movie builds to a cat & mouse chase where you are fully engaged & rooting for the couple.
An intriguing & lively film.

Action-packed and another entertaining movie fom start to finish.
I liked the story and I thought Dwayne Johnson suited/played the character really well. Oliver Jackson-Cohen's hitman character bugged me a little & slightly spoilt the story for me but overall this was a good action flick.

Good action sequences but a weak/predictable plot.
I liked the duo of (growing on me action-man) Jason Statham & (very underrated) Ben Foster and the interesting relationship between their characters. However, not a bad film but the story just could have been better.

RED (2010)
Great casting and this movie has moments of good action & amusing scenes.. but for me the plot felt almost non-existant, it just wasn't exciting or interesting enough to be anything better than average entertainment.

I don't think these movies can ever let you down on the action front.. and if you're a fan of car chase/race sequences, that's a bonus too. The story here has a bit of heart which also adds to the entertainment.

Liam Neeson is quite the action man and does it so well!
This film was well-paced & has plenty of action. The story keeps you guessing too, so it never really got boring. My one problem.. after seeing Taken - which I thought was excellent - this doesn't quite compare.
A fairly good movie still.

Centurion (2010)
Bloody - but not bloody outstanding! The fight scenes were quite suitably gruesome, the story was ok, though the movie is good on a visual scale. Strangely I found the character 'Etain' (Olga Kurylenko) the most interesting despite her being mute!
Not bad but not epic.

I haven't seen the original (a.p.u) but this was really quite good. The story was decent & there were good moments of suspense. The scare scenes were effective too - not over-the-top gore, just well done jump scares (the score probably helped here).
